Do 500GB Hard Drives for the Next Generation seems diminutive?

For the Xbone? Absolutely, since you cannot replace it. (I know external drives are supported but it's cumbersome)

For the PS4? No.

PS4 you can switch drives, and... I recently filled my 1TB HDD on the PS3 somehow, going to have to play some games off the HDD.

I have no idea, how the hell I'm going to switch the 500GB from PS4 into the PS3 and the 1TB from my PS3 into the PS4, without losing all my shit. :(

Cumbersome in the fact that it's an extra device that needs to sit on your shelf? Regardless of how easy swapping the hard drive on the PS4 will be; I don't think there's any way for that to be easier then connecting a USB cable.

Around 80 bucks the last time I checked.

I think if you search around a bit, you can sometimes find those for about 60USD, retail. Still, every little component counts when you're assembling a console, so I cannot really hold it against Sony. I mean, since they're selling PS4's at a loss at launch and all.

(Edit)

I guess I cannot hold it against Microsoft either, at least if they're also selling at a loss. At 500usd I wouldn't think they'd be, but who knows.

The biggest HDDs they sell are only 4 times bigger. It is not the difference between 20 GB and 1TB. No matter what way you cut it, you will have to manage space as some point next-gen.

I guess it really comes down to the fact how comfortable are you with PC side of things. I'm a PC guy and prefer the HDD inside, messing around with installing the drive isnt a biggie for me.

Has Microsoft detailed what can and cannot be stored on the external drive? Can games/files/saves be moved around etc. ?

Will instructions be up for how to replace the PS4 drive on day one? I did it for my old fat PS3 but it's been so long that I don't remember the process.

If that 500GB was an SSD then I'd be fine, but as it stands 500GB is to small. Especially if we start seeing even remotely good digital deals on the consoles.

It does seem a bit small.

I will probably buy a good number of PS4 games on disc or just delete digital downloads when I am done with them.

Maybe a little on the small side, but I don't think it's a big deal if they both have USB 3.0 and full support for external hard drives. It's good that consoles and portables are finally washing their hands of proprietary storage formats, with the lone exception of the Vita.

More important than swapping internal storage is the ability for external storage to be automatically managed. I just want to plug in my 3TB external USB hard drive that you can get for $110 on Amazon and totally forget about it. Let the Xbox One/PS4 manage where content should be downloaded, or moved to the internal hard drive for better performance, etc...

It think anything higher than 500 would be pricey but even still i like the fact that the PS4 lets u put in a bigger HDD so if u want more you can easily just buy it yourself

Yeah, they seem small to me. I've gone from an 80gb to a 250 to a 500 and finally to a 1tb on my ps3 and I probably only have about 100 gb free right now. As long as it's as (relatively) easy to swap the ps4 drive as the ps3 is then I guess I'll live with it for the first year or so.

I understand the concept of convenience but if you're juggling around 6 or 7 games at one time you're probably hardcore enough to just buy more storage.

I'm a power user. 500 is way too small.

I'll hold off until 1TB models are released.

Don't really want an external drive sitting next to my tv.

500GB is not a bad amount, but it does seem on the smaller size. Although most of us would probably be more comfortable with more, not going with a larger drive is saving cost on the unit. Sony has to find that "right size" of cost and value and I guess 500GB was it.

Luckily, PS4 has user-swappable drives like PS3...

I think it's sufficient. Assuming an absolute worst-case scenario of a 10GB OS and every game being 50GB, that would be enough room for nine games installed at once.

Going full digital on Xbone/PS4.... I even think a 1TB will be way to small, if the games will start to close in on ~50GB mark.

You can drop in your own internal hard drive into your PS4.

500 GB is plenty for everyone outside of a small group. Leaving games you're not playing installed it kind of pointless and it increases read/write times iirc.

I "survive" with an 80 GB hard drive in my PS3. Last I checked I still ave 50 GB free.

500 GB is alright to begin with and you can always put in a 2+ TB HDD if you want more space. It's more important for them to have a reasonably low price tag.
Yeah, this. The bigger problem is that the XB1 doesn't support removable storage, though even there with USB 3.0 I imagine many external HDs will do a good job and so that leaves the bigger problem of the HDD being the weak link of the console in regards to reliability. I'm sure we'll end up seeing 1 TB+ drives default in systems after a few more years.

I wish they were bigger. I hate having to manage space.
PS4s is replaceable/upgradable and I hope they used a standard laptop drive again. If thats the case, I might grab a big drive for launch day and have that be the first thing I do with the system.

This is what I'm doing. I'm thinking about getting a 1TB SSHD. Would the PS4 be able to take advantage of the SSHD?

Uncharted 3 GOTY Edition is 43.5GB. Considering 500GB is really 465.66GB then remove the OS partition. How much are we going to truly have left? 1TB should've been the bare minimum. Thoughts?

Your not going to need to install all the languages. Uncharted 3 ships with all language packs along with audio for different languages per cut scene.

Take it out and you have a much smaller foot print.

I'd also imagine both systems will have a small amount of flash ram (16 gigs maybe)for the os to install on

How else would they sell ridiculously overpriced drive upgrades?

I don't normally buy retail games digitally, so it should be fine for me. I can manage free PS+ games and PSN titles well enough with that size. I do wish they were a bit bigger because maybe my expectations will prove wrong and I'll be hungry for more space later. Hopefully install sizes for disc games will still be reasonable.

You have an interesting definiton of "bare minimum". You will probably be able to fully install 10 cinematic AAA titles on your hdd with DLCs and countless indie games, which will be enough for most users. If you want more storage, delete old content or buy a new hdd. Problem solved. An hdd of this size will also keep the price down which makes it the perfect choice. Only offering consoles with bigger hdds is just stupid at this point, because price is an important factor at the beginning of a new generation.
