Do cats kill for fun?

My dog does this too. I'm not sure what it is about killing stuff, but he really enjoys it. Mainly members of the rodent family, and like rabbits/moles/etc. Off the top of my head he's killed:

1 Possum,
3 Moles,
~10 Rabbits
1 Squirrel
~5 Birds
2 Rats
20 Mice
and to my chagrin, 3 skunks.

He generally doesn't eat them afterwards, other than the mice. He eats only the butts off of the mice. I have no idea...

The thing that gets me, he's an all white husky/akita mix. He's not particularly stealthy or quiet (has his license and nametag that jingle together when he walks). I have no idea how he manages to catch all these animals. Especially birds.

I remember going to my friend's house who got some pet rats from the pet store (no idea why someone would want a pet rat). My dog kept gnawing at the cage trying to bite them, lol. He loves cats and other dogs though, gets along great with both.

Finding it kind of funny that he didn't snag a racoon, guess too stealthy for him?

No raccoon population in my area, or else I'm sure he'd have had it out with one.

It kinda sucks, because after he kills something I have to schedule a vet appt to make sure he's ok. Well not after mice/moles, but after the Possum and skunks and stuff. At least he's always up-to-date on shots this way, lol.

Rats can actually be awesome pets. Best rodents I ever owned as a kid were a pair of rats.

Mine does. Catching bats in air and killing them and playing them for hours is his favorite pasttime. And it's always me who cleans up all the blood on the terrace.

My late doberman pinscher had killed for fun a lot too. Especially ducks. Whenever we visit the countryside, first thing she always did was rushing to pond and catching and choking ducks. Oftentimes my father cleaned the parts she had bitten and we grilled & ate the poor animals because the bitch didn't. May God bless her soul.

ur dog eats ass?

my cat just killed a roach and it took her like, 25 minutes. Threw it in the air, catched it with her mouth, plucked its legs one by one, stood watching the agonizing thing while it was trynna escape, then once it got away, chased it and repeat

so yeah, my cat is a sadistic motherfucker

Every other day crows find a way to blow my goddamn mind.

OT: It depends on the cat I think
I've had plenty of cats, some of them would straight up murder anything that moved, others didn't care
some would always eat what they caught, while others would leave the remains at our doorstep
the bringing of dead animals is the first step in how they teach their young to hunt btw
maybe all they're trying to do is teach us how to hunt :o

We've got three cats. Plenty of that going on here. Our youngest cat started out being bullied, being smacked around and corralled into corners and closets by the big old fluffy cat. That was a year ago. Now the big old fluffy cat lives in fear of the 'baby.' Just the nature of the way things work.

i'm pretty sure cats actually enjoy hunting things

they are not walking around in a training montage

No. It's their instinct. They are predators. The 'fun' is just their way of practice and reinforcing those skills.

Edit: And dogs do something similar. It is their instinct to chase prey. But we didn't keep dogs around for thousands of years for their ability to kill small pests, so we've bred out a lot of the aggression that causes them to aggressively kill. Cats on the other hand basically lived alongside us as a means of pest control.

Depends on the dog. If you have rats or other small rodents around get a Jack Russell terrier and watch the bodies pile up.

damn...hadn't thought about this: i have a 6 year old jack russell/maltese combo, i wonder if i can ever get a ferret again while he's about

No, I think it's just pure predator instinct, not malice or recreation. Domestic cats are wired to be efficient killing machines. My Bichon seems to fuck with small animals like a bully though, which really does feel malicious lol.

Yep, I've been watching the Dog & Kennel shows after Thanksgiving/Xmas day parades for a few years now, and they give the history of the various breeds. Lots of the small-medium dogs were bred to get the larger yard pests like gophers and moles.

Sometimes that cat, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a cat, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white.

One of my cats always eats what he kills but the other one just plays with them and brings them to our porch.

You're right. There are a couple breeds of dogs that were bred specifically to hunt small pests (and actually a few for hunting larger animals). That's a bit different from Cats though, who mostly weren't specifically bred for that. They're just darn good at it, and we gained from letting them inhabit our farms and homes.

Pretty sure my cat has never even tried to devour any of the mice / shrews she has severely injured / killed.

Depending of the cats we had, some were leaving full dead body, some were leaving only the head, and sometimes we only saw blood on the floor.

I think predator instinct is why they do it. Moving (living or not) object smaller than them : Search and destroy.

Ugh... Dogs and skunks and worse porcupines two of my dogs use to fight with one or the other at least once a year.

On another note, my GIF collection has been expanded.

Every animal with hunting instincts in the world does this.

My cat only kills small bugs. I had ones that killed birds and such, but he actually ate them after.

i have a broken cat. he was the runt of the litter and doesnt hunt. you could put a bird or mouse in front of him and hed ignore it.
