Do I need a new router? (Xbox Live problem)

I have a Netgear WR641 router that will not stay connect to Xbox Live. It will connect like it is in working order when I turn on the system, but it will invariably drop within the next twenty minutes. My NAT is open so I don't know why it would continue to drop. I can get on XBL fine when I go straight through the modem, but it forces me to disconnect my PC from the internet and is generally a pain to do.

Also, I have not had any problems going online with my Wii using the same router. Granted, I only go to YouTube, but it has still never dropped.

Is this a problem I can fix? Or do I simply need to find a router that is compatible with my X360?
 
I had problems with my router too similar to yours.
So I ended up connecting my 360 thru ICS in the meantime. I really dont feel like buying a new router right now so maybe you could use that solution too.
 
I have Version 3.

I didn't even realize I could upgrade the firmware. How stupid is that? There is one that is more recent than the one I had so I installed it. Obviously. I've been playing Pac-Man for the last 15 or so minutes to see if my game drops again. It hasn't yet, which is a good sign, but I am still approaching this with extreme caution.

Thanks for your help. If it was just a firmware problem I will be grateful but filled with rage. I've had two Pac-Man scores not register because of dropped connections.
 
This has been happening with my connection, too. Maybe it has something to do with the ICMP?

It's a serious pain in the ass.
 
It seems this problem is still prevalent. It's crazy because it was working fine for a week, but now I have the same issues that I stated in the OP. I have upgraded my router (a Netgear 614v3) to the highest firmware, opened ports (3074 and 88) and even tried the UPnP setting. Nothing has worked. My new PS3 is also dropping, though I connect to this wirelessly. Is there any hope? Do I just have to buy a new router? If yes, what is the best I should get if I want to have my PS3 and Wii connected wireless and my X360 through a LAN cable?
 
A lot of routers will say on the box "Xbox Live Compatible" (Linksys and D-Link usually have the labels) which is a pretty good indicator that it wont give you too many problems with connecting. I have a Linksys Wireless G router and in my house we have all 4 wired ports going to 3 360's and my Mac. Combined with the other 2-3 computers that are hooked up wirelessly on this thing and the fact that it runs smooth as shit without a hitch when all computers and 360's are going, can't help but endorse the Linksys.
 
Can you still access the internet on PC when X360 / PS3 drops? Did you reset router to default after updating the firmware? Sounds like you probably need a new router. I am using Netgear WGT 624 w/o any issue for almost 2 years with X360, PS3, PC and Laptop.

Yeah, I don't have many problems with my PC connection and my Vonage phone seems to work fine as well. It's just my video game systems that drop.

What he ment but said in not so well put words was buy a WRT54GL router from linksys and put in the custom firmware.

Though I would recommend using the Tomato firmware instead.

But I dont think you'll have to buy a whole new router since your pc is working fine with it. Try port forwarding, try to put the 360 in one of the other ports on the router aswell. And check the settings and so.

I don't want to buy another crappy router. I want to make sure it's not going to drop games and it will give me lag free wireless play on my PS3 and Wii.

Keep in mind, I am not very tech savvy when it comes to hardware. I can follow the port forwarding guides on the net, but I clearly can't troubleshoot my own problems. What is the easiest to use, best router out there?

you can play online with all 3 360s at the same time without lag or connection problems?
 
Try using a static ip and port forwarding? I have a dlink dv3600(or something) gaming router. So far, no problems with the router and everything runs smoothly.

I think it might be your router. I had similar problems with the router provided by the cable company. I kept getting kicked off live after a few minutes. Spent 3 weeks arguing with the cable company with no solution. Finally went out, but my router/modem and ran my own network. So far, not a single problem with it. I've had it since January.

I recommend the dlink dv3600 gaming wifi router. Easy setup and the customer service was great. Nice thing about it is that when you set up port forwarding, there is an option in the gaming tab which has the xbox live udp/tcp numbers set already. All you need to do is create a static ip for the 360 and to input the ip into xbox live setting on your router. Very fast and easy. Takes like 5 minutes to set up.

I also had your problem with a netgear router. My wireless connections would randomly drop (though not as frequently as you seem to). I looked around before buying another one and from what I've seen, Linksys and Buffalo routers are pretty reliable. I have a Buffalo router and a Buffalo ethernet converter and they work together flawlessly.

how do I create a static ip for my xbox?

is that the ip address under basic settings in the edit settings, in networksettings, in the system blade?

system blade>network settings>edit settings>ip address
