Do you agree with 'Adblock' plugins?

On GAF, obviously no.

But try using the NBC Olympics website without AdBlock. It's a fucking nightmare. Ads pop in in the middle of crucial moments and ruin the whole experience.

lol half of you probably use it on gaf too but no one has the balls to say it. Obviously I do not use it on gaf though, obviously.

Was that directed at me?

I was shocked when I turned off Adblock for Youtube yesterday and was getting minute-long ads before videos. But if it's not intrusive like the ads on this site I leave it off.

Absolutely agree. Whitelist the sites you want to support, hell even keep that "show non-intrusive ads" on.

If there was any other alternative, I'd might use something else. But even one ad with frigging autoplaying music or just some hostile code is too much. You would be dumb not to use one in this day and age.

So you show support to sites you like by unblocking them? How nice of you. Why not just stop visiting the sites that have annoying ads?

I don't use it at all actually, I don't really care since GAF is one of the few sites I actually go to, but I have a question.

If I literally NEVER click on an ad, does the site still make money? I have never seen an ad and said, "Oh WOW, lets click on THAT!"

I dont really mind it if its like gaf but when they start using animations and BRIGHT colors it becomes a problem and I turn it off.

Some of the GAF ads are hilarious, like reading the dating thread there'll be an ad at the top referencing asian singles in my area. GREAT SUCCESS

I have loved the humor that springs forth from the GAY CHUBS dating banners that show-up around here from time to time.. :D

Just curious why GAF is hard on (heh snarf) on piracy of all kinds yet people are loud and proud about porn streams and nobody seems to bat an eye?

who is going to bat an eye while masturbating? GET OFF MY SCREEN.

I only use them to block ads on pages where they're annoying, obnoxious or intrusive. I mean, there's really a need for the mouse-over crap on random words from the text? Or for flash stuff that takes over the actual content with no means to close? Or to have ads banners on both sides of the page, the background and between every paragraph?

i kinda dont know what to think... im of two minds on this. on the other hand i fucking hate all ads because they are manipulative, but on the other hand i understand they are the reason i can use wonderful sites like this and Youtube and many others for free. so obviously they serve a useful purpose, no matter what i might think of them.

so i personally dont block any ads at the moment, i would feel a bit guilty doing it while also enjoying the websites. but i guess people have the right to, especially since so many sites still think its ok to have obnoxiously intrusive ads..

im not of much use to the marketers though since ive never in my life intentionally clicked on an online ad. and i barely ever buy anything besides games and food (being poor) so my consuming behavior isnt that much affected by ads.

Nope, I support the sites I visit. If a site uses very intrusive ads, I stop going to it, rather than just leeching the content.

Id be interested to actually have a thread where people could tell the truth about this since its such a taboo subject on GAF without fear of getting banned. Im gonna guess and say that 5-10% of the users probably do have ads blocked on here, but probably because they installed adblock and never bothered to whitelist anything.

If Youtube gave me the option to pay ÂŁ30 or something for a year of no ads, I would.

No I do not agree with ad blockers btw.

I was wondering this as well. I was under the impression that online ad sales were just based on a website's traffic, and didn't actually track how many times the ads themselves were viewed (not clicked). I unblock a few sites regardless to support them, but does that actually make any difference, even a percentage-of-a-cent difference? Or is there literally no change to the website's profitability? If anyone has experience from either the ad sales side or webmaster side I'd be curious to know.

I do not use adblock but neogaf still has at least one ad with annoying auto play audio. Made several threads about it, other users confirmed the existence of such ad yet mods ignore the issue.

I mean you don't want your users to Adblock at least have the decency to blacklist and ad that sounds like a cops car siren at full blast.

I don't use them . . . I get a service from these web sites I visit and they need a way to pay for their business.

However, I'm getting tempted on some of these videos. I'm not gonna watch a 30 second commercial to see a 70 second video of a cat falling off a table.

Nah. I just only noticed that there were ads when I saw someone in this thread mention them. I never really paid attention to them since I was too busy using the forums. And even now that I do notice them, they don't even bother me, so no need to block them. Not to mention the site is offering it's services to you for free, why would you cut off it's source of revenue?

Everything but Neogaf. Your PC is less secure if you browse the general web without it. It should only be disabled on sites you implicitly trust such as Neogaf. Even things like WoWhead aren't safe, their ads have been known to have keyloggers in them.

This. I use Adblock Plus, but I disable it for sites I trust and want to support, such as this one.

Depends on the intrusiveness of the ads. I never want to click on an ad and I never will, so I use it on websites that place them in a manner that makes it difficult to browse the website without clicking on them, or that have ads that seriously obstruct the functionality of the website (Youtube).

Before anyone mentions it, no, I don't use it on NeoGAF. Having a tiny banner ad display on the page doesn't bother me at all.

I don't block ads. In fact I use a plugin that enlarges ads and makes them more obnoxious. It seems like the right thing to do.

I don't use adblock. The only time I was really tempted to was when ESPN was adopting frames that would distort and move the text on the screen or outright cover it up.A site like GAF for example has NEVER done that to me and has always kept a respectful and clean viewing experience which just contributes more to it's awesomeness. I'd NEVER use it for GAF anyway though. Evilore works too hard to keep the site great.

Never use it. If a site has advertising in such a way that it's too intrusive for me, I just won't visit that site.

Most websites aren't inundating you with crap ads nowadays. The designers are actually putting in some thought. I haven't used adblock in quite a while now.

For sites that you trust, AdBlock shouldn't be used imo.

If you like the site enough, you should help it out by viewing the ads.

I used AdBlock in general to get rid of the terrible YouTube ads: However I disable it on every website and forum that deserves the money such as NeoGAF, bumped.org, Seraphim Labs and a couple of other forums I browse. I would personally just not use it at all, but YouTube's pre-video ads are horrible and now pretty much on every YouTube video.
