Do you like Mario Kart's vehicle customization?

It also adds a lot to the series personality, it's not generic red kart #5 anymore, it's the natural evolution of the DD and Wii concepts.

Yes. These are the actual categories that parts and drivers have an effect on.

Speed - Divided into individual stats for Ground, Water, Air and Anti-gravity. Very noticeable, but not listed.
Acceleration
Weight
Handling - Divided into individual stats for Ground, Water, Air and Anti-gravity. Not listed.
Traction
Mini-turbo - Not listed at all.
Drift type - Inward/Outward, not listed.

Holy shit. That's dumb. I hate things like this.

EDIT: Not that the stats exist, but that they're not shown to the player. And honestly I'm not a huge fan of characters having different stats anyway; it should be tied almost entirely to the vehicle.

I believe the vehicle customization does the exact opposite. It makes the vehicles more generic. If each character had their own completely unique and themed vehicle, it would add much more personality. Some other games do this, such as Sonic Racing (both of them), and I love it there.

I wish they had a lever on the side that created a random kart/driver combination. Would be fun for multiplayer.

I was looking for this when I was playing for the first time, but nope. Every character gets the same thing. Really lame.

There are?

I like it as well. The meta game between my friends before a race starts is hilarious; everybody tries to copy someone without saying a word until someone bursts out into laughter.

Yeah, I don't see how giving everyone the choice of combining whatever parts they want to build their kart while still having their fav. character in the driver seat is worse than limiting karts to one driver. What if Waluigi is my fav character but it's fixed Kart configs, or it's aesthetics, just suck? Do I have to pick another character even though I don't want to?

yes and No, some of the parts look bad that are better. And I do not feel there are enough parts and stuff to actually get me interested, though that might make mario kart a bit more complicated for the audience it wants to fetch. Then again Premade stuff ect ect ect

It definitely needs to be balanced better. The game definitely favors heavier weights/characters.

I actually wish that every character/kart handled the same way and that the changes were simply cosmetic, but that's just me.

You can hardly call it customization... there's a handful fo parts you can choose, there's no color options, and because everything affects your stats you have to sacrifice what looks good for what drives best.

It's okay but there's room for improvement like being able to compare parts, having a favourite slots and actually showing the hidden stats there's no point in hiding them.

It's too basic to have any purpose. I'd rather just go back to the DS/Wii system.

Also, unlocking crappy wheels is the most underwhelming thing ever.

I don't think it mattered much either way, I did about the same no matter which combination I used.

My main problem with it is how difficult they made comparing the stats of two parts. There should have been some way to directly compare whatever you have equipped on your kart to whatever part you're looking to switch it to. As it is you just have to scroll through everything and remember where the bars were.
I like it, it would be so much better with colour customisation though.
Also this. I actually found a combination that I ended up liking aesthetically, but I would have tried many more parts if they didn't look awful with the kart I was using.

I actually like it, because you can balance the characters, so if you want to play with certain character you're not just limited to his or her characteristics. I don't like all the parts, but there are enough options.

Pretty much. Without it certain characters, no matter your preference for them, could be just horrible or drive in a style you don't like. This way you can get the style of driving (relatively) you like and the character you prefer with weight being the only real difference.

Love it but not sure I understand it.

Do the "show info" stats tell the whole story, eg are most of the gliders identical, and is the comet the same as the sports bike?

Also, it's a little annoying when playing online, and you're juste there casually browsing your vehicule parts when suddenly.... 10... 9... 8... 7...

WTF man, give me time to choose my kart dammit. Why couldn't they put us in a group AFTER choosing our vehicule instead?

Love the stats! My favorite part of the game is watching people count how many bars they have in a stat, and then flip to the kart they want to use, and count the bars again to compare, and then flip back and count the bars in a different stat, and then flip back and count to compare, ad nauseum!

Nintendo: if traction is 3.75, label it 3.75. Don't make me sit on the selection screen whilst my friends tediously count this shit out.

I think it's a good feature but I wish they gave you all the info on the kart. And I could go for a few more Mario themed carts and cosmetic pieces. You know, I'd love a race with a Bullet Bill theme. I think they did that once, right? Why not always have the option for stuff like that? Customizing paint jobs (in a separate mode, so as not to bog down character select any further) would also be welcome.

Not really no. Like with FPS it should be about the skill (and maybe luck), not about unlocking (or even paying for) advantages. But ppl like it nowadays it seams.

I like being able to choose different paths, cosmetically that is, but I really don't like the stat system. I like that karts can look differently but they really went overboard with stats, both shown and hidden, in MK8. I hope they cut back on that in MK9, while still retaining ability to change the look of your ride.

It's pretty cool to try out a lot of combinations and have a car look (relatively) unique amongst other players. But I think Jeff Gerstmann made a good point during the Mario Kart 8 Quick Look. It's very obtrusive for a multiplayer 'party' game. It's too confusing if you have a few friends over who never played MK8.

I don't know about 8, but it didn't feel like any setup I had really made a difference besides having really good acceleration.

Also, they really need to make cosmetics and performance separate.

No don't like it, or at least i don't care for it.

Just give me different karts like Double dash or DS and i'm good.
Also this has been the fastest i've dropped a mario kart game. Things aren't looking to good with me and smash.

Wish it were more just cosmetic. I also only end up changing wheels because I like that standard bike and only have one parachute that increases accel

Yes to the first bit.

Regarding the second bit, I have hosted people and I always just recommend that they use the default kart/wheels to start off with. This might not be obvious if there isn't one person there who has played it before but this isn't an issue in my apartment.

Overall I'm happy about the customization. It took a big of getting used to in 7, but it felt natural to me in 8 since they essentially carried over the same system.

I think it's just okay..

What I really hate is that if you want to test out some different parts, where are you supposed to do that?? If I'm playing online, and I choose a kart, I'm stuck with that unless I leave the freaking room. It's awful.

There's not even a comfortable single player mode for this stuff. Why no 'garage mode' where I can drive around a really short test course and feel the impact of any change right away and swap it out without having to leave the mode or go through extensive menus?

The parts themselves don't look very good. It's a bunch of odd looking stuff. Personally, I'd rather they have like 3 or 5 variations on a given part like wheels, or kart body, and either have them look unique for each character or preferably, just have them be size/thickness variations and all under one theme, like a cohesive SNES Mario Kart, Kart design. Let the designs either be basic with color choice, or let the character determine the color.

Everything right now looks too grab bag-like.

I preferred the Mario Kart Wii system, 12 vehicles for each character based on weight class. The vehicles themselves are generic for each weight class, but each character has their own unique paint job for each vehicle.

Best option is Time Trials.

I have no problem with it. It only takes a few seconds to setup and there are noticable differences between the components so you can tune it to play style. I like it and it's encouraging me to experiment rather than just stay with one character.

I find it difficult not to go back to Rosalina though. She's my default.

As someone who historically doesn't find Mario Kart that fun I love it.

The introduction of it and bikes has turned it into a game I really enjoy.

More features isn't necessarily a bad thing. I like that you can fine tune your kart experience.

It's not as simple as it once was but honestly, the series needs to evolve.

I prefer more character unique vehicle designs, MK7 and 8 have a few bits and bobs related to some characters and then bugger all for others, MK7 was okay for me due to the Koopa Clown Car and Barrel Train, MK8 not so much where I'm not really digging many of the designs and just stick with the MK64 inspired pipe frame.
I like how MK DS handled things with a standard kart for each character followed by two more interesting designs and then once you beat all the Cups you could put any character in any of the games vehicles which was a nice middle ground between freedom of choice to tinker around with weight classes in different vehicles as well as having a good range of vehicles to represent each playable character.
Plus it had the Rambi Rider.

Being able to change a driver's stats by quite a large margin adds nothing to the game? I really don't see how.

You used to be able to change stats by changing character.

I think it needs to be simpler. Right now, my girlfriend is terrified to try any other combination because she feels like she'd lose. I convinced her to try the combo I use, and she likes it. But personally, I'm looking for a larger variety of combos too.. Why can't I save pre-set up kart combos? That'd be great.

Anyway yeah, it makes it difficult to mess around in kart customization.

No one wants to go into time trials to try out new parts. They just don't want to pick a new kart piece that looks cool, go into a multiplayer game, and get totally screwed because it makes them play bad.

It needs to be much more intuitive for sure.
