VR doesn't need to be saved. It just needs to continue to develop and overcome its hurdles (motion sickness, form factor, above everything, because then game development and gamers enjoyment can be free - I have at least three friends who would like to play with it, but they feel motion sick and they don't want to buy a set to face the hassle of growing VR legs and risk not being able to).
It will remain a niche until hurdles are solved. After that, even a casual, passing try with it would feel comfortable and with unrestricted movement (REALLY unrestricted movement), the ability to being into the game, plus the range of possible interaction and action, would be unrivaled (it already is in some games intelligently developed for it, and this even with the severe restrictions in game design they are using now to limit motion sickness).
