Do You Think Smash U Will See Character DLC Beyond Mewtwo (Why & If So, When & Who)?

Why is everyone saying no in this thread? Nintendo would be beyond stupid to just look at a huge pile of money and let it burn away. Bring back Snake, Lucas and Ice Climbers and charge $15 each, because everyone will buy them all and why wouldn't they want to make 100% more money on Smash 4?
Because Nintendo. Sometimes I don't know what the hell they do.

Hmm...maybe. I thought maybe one more, sure I'd like more, but it seems more plausible for just one more after Mewtwo.

As for who it would be, would love either Rayman, Snake (though unlikely), Bayonetta, TW101 character(s), Sora (unlikely again I know), Layton, Phoenix Wright, squid kid as someone posted seems to make sense for Nintendo too.

Speaking of Rayman...what came of that "comment" Ubisoft were supposed to make on Tuesday? I bet they cancelled it as they thought it was legit which is bad for the company not to know that ha ha

I'm going to for the improbable guess, just in case. Super Duper Smash Brothers Turbo, December 2016. N3DS required on handheld side.

Regular character DLC, probably no. Regular 3DS is a constraint. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Sure, let's dick over the larger marketbase. That's sure to go over well.

What would happen exactly? Mass riots? Mass suicides? Millions of people demanding refunds? There will always be those that complain, but I think the Smash fanbase overall would be happy to see the return of a character that the 3DS dicked over.

Specials werent even the reason you played those characters anyhow.

Wasn't the forward spacial pretty important to Lucas?

I meant more Luigi has Mario's fireballs as a custom rather than commenting on who is/isn't a clone. I'd argue Wolf's pretty close to being as unique in comparison to Fox as Luigi is to Mario tho, copy and pasted FS aside.

I meant more along the lines of who's more iconic.

All of Fox's spacial had a variant that once belonged to Wolf, though.

Plus, are you really putting those two on the level of Luigi?

Fox and Ness got more than just two moves, they got the whole spacial moveset.

I'm just saying they'll not add much to the game. Maybe I just don't want them back in favor of other characters.

"special"

Also, Fox did not get all of Wolf's moves, and Ness's "Lucas" specials don't even work the same. And Wolf and Lucas has completely different A moves than their "clone counterparts". Lucas especially.

Ness's Lucas PK Fire does not work the same as how it worked on Lucas originally. It has much more end lag and does not shift his momentum, there's no reason to use it on Ness and it's a poor substitute. And again Lucas's A moves are completely different outside of a similar side smash. There's also the Rope Snake and very unique aerials too.

I can't see them adding an original character. It takes a lot of effort just to make one fighter. The QA testing alone must be a daunting task. It's not like Mario Kart where it's basically an avatar you slap some stats on, and hell they only made six of those. By the time Mewtwo comes out, the game will have been out for over six months. Six months for one character. Are we supposed to get two characters a year for five years? I can only see them adding Lucas and Wolf. Those two alone would be big enough for the hardcores. They can still do smaller DLC like stages and costumes. Maybe even more challenges and trophies.

It'll be cut characters we get, which I am fine with. We still need to know what the Smash hiring was about since I doubt they're already grabbing people for 6. If 3DS was 4 and WiiU 5. I can see a DLC pack or packs being 6.
Also I need my boy snake. Everyone knows third party characters sell on DLC .

I don't expect anyone beyond Lucas and Wolf, and even then considering the amount of work that goes into one character (not to mention the possible factor of Sakurai's health) I expect their chances are slim.

Basically.

Actually if there isn't any teasing of anything else after Mewtwo/by E3, I think they're done with DLC.

I expect Wolf to fill the last hole on the Wii U css, and then that's it. Star Fox U is coming and it'd be a nice promotion for it.

With just Mewtwo the Wii U css is weird looking and off.

I think we will. I'd love to see a couple of returns (Lucas + Wolf) and a couple of jokes (Tingle + Tom Nook, maybe even Cranky Kong).

I'd be very surprised if Nintendo built a DLC infrastructure for Smash Bros, and then only used it for a single character, let alone one that they're going to give away free to a bunch of people anyway.

Mario Kart 8's DLC has also been incredibly successful, so that certainly counts for something.

I think it's very likely we'll see more DLC characters.

I also think we'll see DLC stages. If you look at the stage selection screen, the "Random" option is shunted over quite far to the left, for seemingly no other good reason. And there's just enough space for a third tab, alongside "Normal" and "Custom".

I think Nintendo will keep the game fresh with new DLC packs down the line, exactly as they did with MK8. So maybe in summer we should be hearing about this.

I thought that comment also came with the rumour? Unless I'm horribly mistaken

I wouldn't hold my breath for DLC characters post-Mewtwo, but it's certainly nice to wish for things. Wonder Red would be a great addition I'm sure (my greatest shame is buying TW101 and have it sitting in my backlog), plus if the characters are all similar, reskin them like Bowser Jr.

Bayonetta I'm more doubtful for. Snake had a lot of explosive weapons to make up for the fact that Nintendo didn't want him using guns, and I doubt they would give Bayo access to only her katanas...though I must admit Smash attacks to summon demon punches/kicks and a Final Smash for Gommorah would be pretty badass. It's a shame about the gun thing though, because her winning stance could easily be her breakdance move firing guns in the air and ending with a wink to the camera.

It would really be an epic fail if they didn't. The Wii U version isn't exactly selling hardware or as much software as they would have liked. If other prominent fighting series can do great DLC packs there is no excuse for Smash Bros.

I need some help here, why does everyone say Lucas? Aren't his moves in the game as customs for Ness? I understand the love for the character, but why do you all think Nintendo would put out a near identical character for paid DLC? Besides the hardcore who would want to buy a Ness clone?

I'd love to see Snake back, and I think there will be more. Smash is a once in a generation type game and Nintendo has been doing great with DLC lately. They'll want to capitalize on it.

I think what will be telling will be the the marketing/rereveal for the upcoming update with the new stage, new modes and Mewtwo. If there's further new content, I'm pretty sure it'll be at least teased there. If they just repeat the known information, then that'll probably be it.

Lucas would be really easy for them to add, he shares a body skeleton and hurtbox data with Ness, along with jump physics, etc.

Lucas' specials work entirely different from Ness, even Ness' customs aren't really exactly the same as Lucas. Every one of his standard attacks except his forward Smash are entirely different from Ness, making him more of a unique character than a true clone.

Yeah clones DLC would be absolutely awful
I understand lucas and wolf are a bit more than clones (ie not lucina), but still..

The only two vet clones are Roy and Pichu, and despite Roy being popular in the Smash Melee crowd, him and Pichu's chances are pretty slim, even as DLC. So you don't need to worry about clone DLC (although clone DLC would be easy for them to do and have the net benefit of more characters in the game)

The problem is that even if Nintendo wants to do DLC, it's ultimately Sakurai's decision to make (assuming his contract is like Brawl's).

If any game warrants extensive downloadable content it's Smash Bros., but Sakurai has some pretty archaic views on online gaming. I love him, but I'm not too confident in his ability to make sensible decisions regarding DLC.

Will happily sacrifice half the roster for SOLID SNAKE.

Thanks, I didn't play Lucas or Ness much in Brawl so I wasn't sure. Still wondering though, besides the hardcore, do you think enough people would be interesting in paying for what would be for most people, a Ness clone?

Maybe if they added him as a bonus for doing a season pass...but I can only imagine that causing more issues than fixing any.

I don't think anything other than Mewtwo, the Miiverse stage and online tournaments is in development right now. Maybe when they're surprised by the many Mewtwo purchases they might develop one or two more, but I'm not expecting Street Fighter 4 like roster expansions.

Honestly, I think it's more just about how burnt out he is. If he says no, it's likely because of his health or just the fact that he's always eager to wash his hands of Smash when he finishes a game.

That being said, I'm curious about whether Nintendo left wiggle room in the contract for them to make DLC even if Sakurai walks away. They had to anticipate that people would be especially hungry for it, so I can see them appointing someone else to it even if it's just a little bit of content.

I think Sakurai will finish the content he wanted to put in the game, which includes Mewtwo and possibly some of the cut veterans as well as Chorus Kids. But after that he's done. He likely just wants to wrap up the content he didn't have time to finish, which I think is totally fine.

This man talks nonstop about how hard developing Smash is on him, so if there is a DLC effort, I really don't see him being involved in any other way than a consultant (which is actually something he should consider to keep his influence in the series while taking it a bit easier).

As far as what I'm hoping for? Wolf, Lucas, Ice Climbers (yes I'm aware why they were cut thank you), and Chorus Kids, alongside Mewtwo.

If I'm being greedy, then the ones above plus Snake, Ivysaur, Squirtle, and two newcomers

No. I think only Wolf, Squirtle, Ice Climbers or Snake would get people's attention for DLC. Ivysaur, Pichu, Roy and Lucas would be nice, but wouldn't probably get the attention DLC needs to be successful.

For Smash 5, I'm pretty sure Wolf will become the new Mewtwo as far as demand for his return. His exclusion in Smash 4 was... odd (much like Mewtwo in Brawl).

I can't really think of a situation where we could get 3 DLC characters. It doesn't work on the Wii Menu, it's very specifically set up with 52 slots in mind without much room for expansion. You can't have a page 2 on a character screen all players share, and the icons can't scale any smaller without being too small.

But with that note, the CSS will look really weird and wrong with just Mewtwo. The first row will have 12 characters, while every other row will have 13 and it'll just look unfinished and messy. So just for the sake of making the menu look nice, we should get 2 DLC characters.

It also tells me they specifically designed the menu with 52 slots in mind, since they could easily just have re-organized the menu to fit 50 characters instead in a more clean and even format.

The 3DS' CSS is a mess anyway, so that doesn't really matter (and it has 4 slots and the ability to have pages).

I do, in the slower summer months seems like an ideal time for it to be released. A little E3 hype right before its released is easy PR points.

hoping for the best, expecting the worst but honestly no, i don't expect anything after Mewtwo.

If there's DLC Sakurai would want to make it and i think he will step away from the project and the team will disband in the very near future.

I'm not optimistic, partly because of Nintendo's reluctance to be accused of releasing an incomplete game. The roster is pretty stacked anyway.

I would much rather have DLC stages anyway. Even if it's just a few more HD Melee stages, the game needs a few more.

Absolutely, I think Sakurai is super design oriented and OC. He didn't leave 4 squares out of the CSS for no reason. Probably will be 3 more, here are the ones I'd personally like to see:

Snake
Wolf
Lucas

I want these, but instead of wolf (or in addition to) WONDER RED

Lucas was my main so not having him in 4 has been hard. Ness isnt the same.
I would be insanely happy if he was DLC and would buy it day one.

It'd be nice, but...nah. It really doesn't seem like it's going to be the same type of party that it was with Mario Kart or Hyrule Warriors.

Sad, though, because Smash is the ideal game to have had this type of support.

I personally think they'll stick with characters that they worked on but couldn't finish. The Rhythm Heaven rep being one of them (but let's be honest, we all know it's the Chorus Kids). I'm also gonna say Dixie given my faith in Spainkiller, but the Chorus Kids are the only ones with any legit evidence of being worked on. I don't expect the Ice Climbers because of the regular 3DS, but I could see Wolf happening.

Bring back best Roy please
Let's just say the Smash community are the only fans FE Roy has.
