Do you think Sony will push 3D again with the PS4?

Games that have done 3D properly (Batman AC, Trine 2, Tomb Raider) have been absolutely incredible. I can absolutely guarantee everyone saying it's a fad haven't actually experienced big screen 3D gaming at 60 fps on a PC. The PS3 was way too underpowered for it though.

3D is needed because the Oculus Rift's children will be here in a few years.

You're right unfortunately, and I've said this many times now. Shitty experiences, shitty displays, and catering to a lowest common denominator with barely there effects are to blame for 3D's current failure, not glasses or indifference. Obviously no one is going to wear a hunk of plastic their face for an effect so subtle and subdued it can barely be distinguished and adds absolutely nothing (the vast majority of movies and console games). It's a shame cause the visual effect on a large enough close enough screen with the PC's showpieces (e.g. Tomb Raider) is an incredible experience that I don't think anyone could walk away from unimpressed.

I really hope not. It's a cheap gimmick that most people are not going to pay a huge premium for. A lot of people may not mind paying an extra $2 on their movie ticket for a 3D film, but if Sony (or any company for that matter) thinks the average consumer is going to sink thousands of extra dollars on a 3D TV and the accompanying accessories, they're just downright delusional. You don't have to be an expert predictor of market trends to see that there just isn't a huge desire for 3D at a much higher price.

If it is trivial to add then well see it continue to be a feature. 1080p games should be able to do 3D at 720p without much trouble, wheras this gen games struggled to even be 720p in the first place, and then were further downgraded for 3D

Ironman 3 was the first 3D movie I saw and I walked out confused as to why there is such vitriol and hatred of the format, especially from gamers. Games seem like a natural fit. It'd be a shame if they completely abandoned the format.

3d is terrible. Sony was not demoing any 3d stuff at NAB this year (no one was really) so I am pretty sure that manufacturers got the memo that 3d is not popular.

God I hate 3D. Its insufferable.

I've seen maybe 3 movies that were well done in 3D, one being Avatar and the others being Dredd and Hugo. But most of the times its shit, and I don't know if its everywhere the same but for 3D movies we are being charged an extra buck. Last movie I've seen was Iron Man 3, and I actually thought its 3D was useless.

For games I think it sucks too, I'd rather have a higher resolution and framerate. Consoles can't be upgraded so the software simply takes a hit.

No I think someone said in a interview at the PS meeting that the 3d support was because that is what Sonys TV group was pushing so they had to be a part of that. But now that fad has passed.

Games seem like a natural fit.
Games are a natural fit for 3D. All of the people who are saying otherwise have never played one, so they're in no position to be an expert on it.

And not all glasses are crap, either. The ones I use are so lightweight you don't even realize they're there. I bring them to the theater rather than use the crap ones they provide. Yes, Virginia, there ARE 3D glasses that weigh only half an ounce and don't require batteries. They're called "passive". It's a wonderful technology that's been around for about half a century.

Adoption is really a non-issue these days, since practically every TV sold at least supports 3D internally even if it doesn't include the extra hardware. And glasses-free screens are only a few years away. They showed some new glasses-free tech at CES this year, and everyone who saw it was blown away.

3D is not going to go away this time, I'm sorry to say.

Maybe? I dont know...

It is cool in cinemas like IMAX and such, but in smaller screens its kinda meh honestly. They will probably try going for the 4K thing now.

Waste of resources. I know I can't stand it. I have 3d off all the time on my 3ds and when I see movies I prefer 2d as it looks much better.

Iron Man 3 is the WORST recent example of 3D, go watch Avatar, Hugo, The Hobbit and How to Train your Dragon, make sure the movies are filmed in 3D and Not Postcobverted.

I hope so, because eventually TVs with a 3D display that don't require glasses will become affordable or at least available, and I'd like there to be a library of games that support that.

You can snag a 32 inch 3D LED tv for less than ÂŁ250 now. I think there will be a lot of excitement for 3D when lots of people can get it.

Really the problem is that most people are gaming on computer monitors, little televisions etc - the install base is way too small.

I'm confident that the PS4 will support 3D, to an even higher extent than PS3 does now. It's a newly developed machine, and 3D will be integrated into the operating system. As such, all PS4 games should be compatible with 3D display technologies, or at least the overwhelming majority of them (the possible exceptions being games deliberately designed with 2D or retro-styled visuals).

I don't believe they will put any substantial amount of marketing emphasis on 3D, though. They'll mention 3D games/movies as part of the feature list, but I feel that it's "expected" for a new, powerful system to have 3D support.

No one went out and spent thousands of dollars for 1080p either. They needed a tv, and 1080p just happened to be a common feature. Bought my 55" LG 3DTV for $999. The 2D version was $899.
I spent $100 for 3D.

I wish 3D hadn't been shoved out in it's half baked state. I believe there is a lot that can still be done with 3D and when the tech is ready and the designers use it properly, 3D could be amazing.

I was almost done with any and all 3D until I saw The Hobbit at 48fps. That was the best 3D anything I've ever seen and hope it helps change the future of 3D.

I really enjoyed playing Skyrim in 3D on my PC, I have a pretty nice monitor that doesn't really ghost so I was hoping more games would come that would officially support it. I bought it before the whole Oculus Rift discussion started up with Carmack so I would have waited had I saw that, but ultimately I don't mind that kind of 3D at all.

It is very easy to "port" current games into that format that are not officially supported, compared to the Oculus Rift I suspect most games are going to need to be more heavily modified to work with it (more factors to worry about, the most important being the neck model).

The other advantage 3D monitors supply is higher resolutions (1080p 3D is like nothing else). Also it's nice not to be completely cut off from the world around you.

And lastly with a 3D monitor you get a great display for 3D but also 2D for when you need it. If you wanted to put a ton of money into the highest end Oculus Rift you'd be stuck with a headmounted display only. People are still going to want 2D displays.

Of course I intend to purchase a Oculus Rift at some point, but a part of me hopes the 2 technologies can live together in harmony. I salivate at the thought of a 4k 3D monitor, something I doubt the Oculus Rift will be able to do for quite some time.

Finally got around to opening up GoW Ascension. Wow I didnt think Id miss the 3D as much as I did. The game just feels lacking compared to Ghost of Sparta. The beginning battle against the Kracken in GoS felt HUUUUGE in 3D, the bug giant in Ascension just felt meh in comparison despite the major upgrade in graphics.

Has there been any update on 3d gaming by Sony? I have an optoma 3d beamer, and i must say 3d is very awesome on such a big screen.
