Do you think the games released in 2014 are better than the ones from 10 years ago?

2004 FPS wins easily. RPGs right now it's Divinity: Original Sin and Might & Magic X vs Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines and Knights of the Old Republic 2. As good as the 2014 rpgs were, they don't really hold a candle to those two games so right now it's 2004 in a landslide. Pillars of Eternity and Dragon Age (ha) better be some magic to turn that around.

Unfair comparison. It should be 2014 and 2002 for the same period in the consoles lifecycles.
Shouldn't it be 2001? 2001 was the first year with the big next gen games coming out same as 2014.

2001 crushes 2014 even harder than 2004.

GTA3

Halo 1
Tribes 2

WoW is the best game ever (even if it's kind of shit right now). If that wasn't part of the argument 2014 would win by a huge huge margin. There are multiple titles that are on my top 10 GOAT's that have released this year for me.

Can we please remove the re-released games on that list?

I mean if we are going to count the re-release games then 2014 is stacked as fuck with RE4 on there. I mean come on now.

Let's see here:

MGR : This is not a 2014 game, it's a 2013 game. It only released on PC in 2014.
Assassin's Creed Liberation HD : HD re-release
World of Tanks: 360 edition: Re-release/port
TloU: HD remaster
Tomb Raider: HD remaster
RE4: HD remaster
MGSV: This is not even a full game, it's a demo.
Hearthstone: This game was pretty much fully functional in 2013, don't know why it's listed as a 2014 game

Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z on that list basically makes that list lose -10 points. The game is Z tier action gaming and has put a massive shit stain on the NG series.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal was 2004 as well I think. So yeah, 2014 comes up way short.

For any nintendo fan, 2014 >>>>>> 2004.

Nope. I'd take The Thousand Year Door and Prime 2 over anything Nintendo's released so far this year. There's still Smash Wii U though.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but these three came out that year:

Two of them are some of my favorite games of all time.....so, I think 2004 has this year beat with the sole exception being the stuff Nintendo is putting out (Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros U/3DS look to be sooo good :D!).

2004, but that's to be expected. The sixth gen was in its prime at the time and hadn't started to wind down. This gen is still in its awkward youth.

Halo 2, Metroid prime 2, San Andreas, paper Mario, MGS... Nope
2004 is better. Even 2001 is better as well

I have a Wii u so 2014 isn't that bad

Halo 2 & the KOTOR Series (which came out '04ish depending on the platform) are some of the best games I have ever played and have yet to be beaten by anything really...

On a side note... My god has it really been ten years, I remember playing Halo 2 on launch day for the first time in my parents living room... What the hell, where has the time gone.

Bronetta

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I'll let you know after I get to play Bayonetta 2.

MGS3 and Half Life 2 are Top 10 of all Time tho.

2014 no. 2015 absolutely. And it would be cheating to use collections and remasters of games released in previous years like MCC. But Bloodborne, MGS5, and Witcher 3 have the potential to be among my favorite games of all time and those will (most likely) be just the first quarter.

2004 by blowout. 1998-2004 was the golden era.

Also Metal Gear Rising came out in early 2013.
You have to include 2005-2006 as well though (although 2006 was previous gen so I guess 2005 was really the last year of the PS2/XBX/GCN era).

2005:

Resident Evil 4
Devil May Cry 3
Gran Turismo 4
Call of Duty 2
Tekken 5
God of War
Shadow of the Colossus
Lumines
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Psychonauts
Guild Wars
Ninja Gaiden Black (I mean if we are including re-releases here then this fucking counts)
F.E.A.R.
Soul Calibur 3
Prince of Persia 2 Thrones
DOA4
We Love Katamari

2006

DMC3SE
MGS3 Subsistence
Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter
Kingdom Hearts 2
New Super Mario Bros
Dead Rising
Okami
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Gears of War
Resistance Fall of Man
Just Cause
Lost Planet
Saints Row
Company of Heroes
Killzone Liberation

Times are different now. In the PS2 generation, it's first year on market was pretty amazing and it was pretty much swinging like crazy from then onwards with GC and Xbox entering the mix and having some great stuff of their own. With this generation, 2015 is going to feel like the real beginning as bigger games are simply taking longer. In that respect, it's more similar to the PS3/360/Wii generation, but when that got underway, there were some really good years.

2009

Street Fighter IV
Killzone 2
Resident Evil 5
Resistance: Retribution
Braid
inFamous
Fight Night Round 4
Dissidia Final Fantasy
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Demon's Souls
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Forza Motorsport 3
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Assassin's Creed II

2010:

Bayonetta
Darksiders
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Mass Effect 2
BioShock 2
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
Yakuza 3
God of War III
Just Cause 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Super Street Fighter IV
Alan Wake
Red Dead Redemption
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Halo: Reach
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Vanquish
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Gran Turismo 5

2013:

DmC
Ni no Kuni
Fire Emblem Awakening
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
Metal Gear Rising
Tomb Raider
God of War: Ascension
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Bioshock: Infinite
Injustice: Gods Among Us
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
The Last of Us
Pikmin 3
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Killzone: Mercenary
Grand Theft Auto V
Rain
Fez
Beyond: Two Souls
Pokémon X and Y
Batman: Arkham Origins
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Gran Turismo 6

There were other good years in that generation too.

Next year has a strong line-up with Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, The Order: 1886, Battlefield: Hardline, Mortal Kombat X, Metal Gear Solid V, Uncharted 4, Halo 5, Persona 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, The Legend of Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and some yet to be announced big ones. It can be an incredible year if the titles live up to their potential.

Year with some of the best games ever made vs first year post console launch which is typically weak.

This was the first full year of the PS2

ICO
Silent Hill 2
Jak and Daxter
Final Fantasy X
Grand Theft Auto 3

Twisted Metal: Black
Gran Turismo 3
Devil May Cry
Metal Gear Solid 2
SSX Tricky
Tony Hawk 3
FreQuency
Soul Reaver 2
Dark Cloud

The PS2's lineup every single year was just flatout ridiculous.

Along with all those grand releases, 2004 also had Paper Mario: Thousand Year door, one of the best rpgs of all time. 2014 in comparison is just dry and not very memorable.

2004 looks way better, it's one of the best years in history while 2014 is one of the worst. I see about six or seven games from 2004 that would be in the running for goty over every 2014 game.

That looks like the lineup of the first two years. PS2 came out in March 2000, can't include all those second half 2001 games in the list. As I remember, PS2 was pretty disappointing until GT3 hit in summer 2001.

Yes I think the games released now are much better. In the context of the year they were released however they might be viewed as bad or good. Time travel back to 2004 and wipe my memory that looks like an amazing list of games. Travel forward and restore my memory and then run through this years' games and I'm more disappointed. But no the games released now are better.

really? there were a lot of notable PC releases in 2004.

Far Cry, counter strike source, half life 2, WoW, UT 2004, doom 3

Nah. I got tired of FPS/TPS games after countless hours of playing Half Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, Quake III Arena and Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6. It was only COD4 that got me back.

WoW is great no doubt, but that's it.

KOTOR 2, vampire: bloodlines are from 2004 too

also def jam: fight for NY

basically there is at least one legendary game released for everyone in 2004, it's not even remotely fair

Nope. Back then we had SOCOM 2.

It technically came out at the end of 2003 but not until 2004 for Europe so it still counts. :p

Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Jak 3

My two favourite games of all time, which happened to come out exactly 10 years ago and in the exact same month as each other (November). They blew my mind as a kid. Nothing blows my mind these days lol (except Ratchet and Clank games). And to prove it's not just nostalgia talking, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3) almost took first place as my favourite game of all time.

I just miss the age of 3D platformers...

This year hasn't been a particularly banner year for games in general. 2013 had a better line up of games, overall. Though the year is not quite done yet, and there are still some potential heavy hitters left.

Actually... I guess Nintendo has had a pretty good year for 2014...

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Absolutely not. Not even close. Ninja Gaiden? Metal Gear Solid 3? Metroid Prime 2? 2014 is a monumental step back in terms of both innovation and gameplay mechanics.

Though honestly, I'd probably apply that logic to anything comparing gen 6 games to more recent stuff.
