Do you think this gen will go "downhill" after 2010

i just hope new consoles from microsoft and sony aren't announced this year. give developers another year to work on existing platforms and fully realize the hardware's potential.

I personally think that's one of the reasons why we've had a detectable surge in the popularity of PC gaming here on GAF. The current console situation is stale so people are returning to the PC to get their techy, high-end gaming fixes. This is a good thing, IMO.

Or people are going back to PC after getting tired of sloppy performance from their games coupled with unreliability and overpriced accessories.

Maybe not for the consoles because of Natal and Arc but for the current handhelds yes I do. Thats why I think we may be seeing next-gen handhelds from Nintendo and Sony likely next year.

If all games stopped being made as of today, I'd still be backlogged for decades. I just got another batch of 2600 carts at a thrift store on the weekend. There is no end!

Nintendo wise I think they'll run out of 'big' games again and people will bitch once again that they don't care about teh hardcorez with no games. Its silly but Nintendo should have spread them out? :lol

So lets all enjoy Mario, Metroid and (maybe) Zelda this year and just cause you've already played them and they're not still coming soon Nintendo still loves you(r money).

its probably nostalgia but nothing beat the late 90s for gaming, it was at its peak, pc, consoles, all had awesome just awesome stuff on it, and aside from gta last gen, gaming has been kinda boring since then. This gen has sort of an identity crisis to me, lotta shakeups to the "norm" happened, hd cost + economic downturn + wii mania changed gaming, Have to wait and see if thats good or bad. This gen just doesn't have the magic last gen (and the previous psx/saturn/n64/pc gen did), I dont know Im probably just getting old, jaded, and more importantly, too picky.

Shit load of games still due on XBLA, enough to keep 2011 healthy.

Mass Effect 3 hopefully.

Demon's Souls 2 would make 2011 a great year by it's release alone for me.

Add to that what many others have said about how all three consoles have found their places and are putting out lots of polished quality games and I don't see how it could be down hill.

2010 is going to be a pretty hard year to beat though if the first quarter is any indication.

The more motion control, the worse IMO.
Part of the gaming experience is sitting on my couch with a bag of chips and a soda, just being damn lazy. I don't want shit that's gonna make me get up and move and flail my arms; I want to be comfortable. That's the reason I loved the GameCube.

People really underestimate developers. There's a lot to be learned, and I think we have a ways to go in this generation

I wouldn't say WAAAYYYS. Sure there is room to grow, but a lot of big developers are already on their 2nd if not 3rd projects by now so we've already seen some of the bigger improvement steps. See Bioware with ME1 to ME2.

Not saying there isn't improvement to be had though. I think a lot has already been learned though.

Nope. Still got Zelda, Last Guardian, Persona 5, and Mass Effect 3 to look forward to. Might as well slap Infamous 2 in that bunch...and Arkyum Asylum 2. And pokemon Gen V.

The verdict: Hell no. And diablo to the mix as well. As a matter of fact, looking at all these great games that will be out in 2011 I have to ask you a question OP. What the fuck are talking about?:lol

Being mainly an online gamer, I can't see how things can improve going forward, at least in the US, with fairly pedestrian internet speeds, there isn't much more ooomph they can push in multiplayer games.

I think that there is a lot left in terms of single player potential left in this gen.

I don't even know how someone would know such a thing, but it certainly can't be worse than 2005-2008.

!!!

There were many awesome games in that period - unless you're being genre specific.

I think the OP is asking a stupid question.

Will 2012 be a worse year than 2015 for professional horse-shoe throwing?

depends on if arc and natal games are any good. I really hope the arc can be the new mouse for ps3 fps. that could just be naive though...

No, maybe after 2011. The next two years are going to be choc full of releases, then we usually hit a "low". I think this gen has at least one more major year/two of big releases. probably around 2013

I think Sony has their schedule down well too, they seem to have enough titles being cycled that there's always something coming out until the loop restarts and the next games come out of their two year development cycles, so you won't really see much for gaps on PS3

No way. It just really started last year. Also now the really great games will come since most devs know how too handle the systems.

2007 owns you, still.

Yep, don't see how 2009 was considered a good year if 2007 was bad. 2009 (and 1st half 2010) was basically filled with a bunch of sequels to 2007's big titles. Some better, some worse, but still a lot more of the same.

Nope, unless you're a wii only owner and get upset that Nintendo blew another load and have nothing to show for it for the next two years again.

Still a bright future ahead imo!

Publishers tend to be more weary of doing new IPs this late in to the gen. Having said that, if Natal and Arc can boost some significant extra life in to this gen's cycle, then who knows.

EDIT: This gen did take a long while to get going though. With the early 360 stuff being PS2/Xbox up-ports, PS3 and Wii being LTTP and the former taking ages to get off the ground sales-wise. Not to mention we're only just now seeing GOW 3 and Alan Wake. Splinter Cell Conviction is the first proper SC of this gen too.

This year has already been awesome. Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, FFXIII. And now GOW3 - before we've even entered April!

Well, they've still got a little lea-way in the graphical potential of the consoles, and every release that comes pushes and optimizes to get more from the console. Personally I think we're probably looking at edge right now, with God of War 3, I dont think things could improve to such a point where you would visably notice a different. I'm expecting frame rates to improve and gameplay to run smoother etc.

I'm hoping now that the graphics have reached limit that designers will start paying more attention to gameplay mechanics, stories and A.I (especially ally A.I as they tend to be completely useless in most games).

If Microsoft and Sony decide to stick to a 10 year plan, then no, I think things will go up for a while. By not forcing developers to learn new hardware again, they are able to take advantage of the 360 and PS3 in great ways. After the way 2010 has started, I'm confident developers will continue down this path.

This gen is getting more and more crazy. More 80+/100 games are coming out now than ever before. I think part of it is that this gen is still going strong. By now in previous gens, devs would be working on engines for the next-gen already which in turn would control the amount of games coming out since developers were always looking to the next console.

In some ways, I'm hoping for the next-gen to start sooner than later because I cannot keep up with every big game release anymore whereas 2-3 years ago it was a piece of cake.

Let me just give you an idea of the games I'm looking forward to this year:

Miles Edgeworth (haven't gotten a chance to play it yet)
StarCraft II
Splinter Cell Conviction
Super Street Fighter IV
Red Dead Redemption
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands
Dead Rising 2
Mafia II
Fallout New Vegas
NHL 11
Halo Reach
Max Payne 3
Batman Arkham Asylum 2
The Last Guardian
Portal 2

and then there are others that I'm keeping an eye on:
Alpha Protocol
MK9
Alan Wake
Crackdown 2
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
Medal of Honor
LA Noire
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Dead Space 2
Force Unleashed 2
Crysis 2
Spec Ops: The Line

And then theres some possible unannounced games:
Gears of War 3
Rainbow Six next
Half Life Episode 3
Mass Effect 2 DLC

Thats way more games than I EVER remember anticipating. I'll probably end up skipping more than half of that.

In Wii, yes. In the "HD twins" no, specially in PS3. Thanks to 3D, motion controls, and improved 3rd party support (people scaping from Wii) +better HW knowledge.

After a disappointing previous year, this year is gonna bomb, and bomb hard too. Probably there are again enough game which get a too big hype but there will be very solid games this year. It shall go downhill next year but I actually prefer that, there are coming way too much good titles this year.

I know I may get called out on this but I'm just genuinely curious. It's a wonderful time to be a gamer right now, casual or hardcore. You've got all kinds of AAA games coming out this year, and a lot were in Q1! Mass Effect 2, GOWIII, Halo: Reach, Final Fantasy XIII, Bioshock 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Rock Band 3, Natal and the Arc (assuming they have good-great games), Alan Wake, SMG2, and the list goes on and on. So I say GAF, do you think it's gonna go downhill from here?

I'm not interested in a single one of those games (or Arc/Natal for that matter), so for me it can only go up.

I do admit I find it hard to beat 2010 with games like Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II, The Last Guardian and LA Noire, though. Certainly one the best years in gaming ever, if not the best (for me). However we still have later stuff like Aliens: Colonial Marines, Agent, Suda 51's project with EA, RAGE, Thief IV, Deus EX 3, and a ton of other stuff still to come. Looking at other gens we know the best shit comes later in the life of a console, so I don't understand why it should go downhill at all.

Uh, no. New games are announced all the time.

Plus we're going to see more sequels of almost all games you've listed.
