Do you think we will get FFXVI this generation?

Nah. 2016 Had to be the year of FFXV but let's be honest (I love the game so far) , it's got a few months of work left to really polish it up and a bunch of DLC coming that will make it what was original intended. Much the same as the Witcher 3 not being truly complete until Blood and Wine released roughly a year after the initial games launch.

So , that team is pretty much tied up polishing up their own game.

Nomura has dual directing duty between FF7r and the much further along Kingdom hearts , Square-enix as a corporation still has Dragon Quest XI coming too , so that's 3 big games that I imagine won't all come out at once. DQXI will probably come out in Japan in 2017 at least , FF7r might see a demo next year with a full release for it's first episode in 2018 and Kingdom hearts 3 is probably a 2018 game.

So , I mean , it's likely Square could start development on a 16th final fantasy game once all the DLC is done. That would put a start date at early 2018. Now, we all know that FFXV took the 18 month old corpse of Versus XIII (it didn't get much work until after FFX shipped) , just doing this took almost 4 full years just to get the game into the state it is right now. This tells me a fully new game would probably take 5 years.

This means 2018,2019,2020,2021,2022 with a launch late that last year possible. So, basically I'm saying there is zero chance of getting another mainline PS4 / xb1 final fantasy title. Outside of FFXIV expansion packs (which isn't what's being asked here at all).

Now, if they were smarter - they'd continue polishing Luminous tech to a nice shiny sheen of glistening perfection (it's so very close) and using art assets already collected for FFXV (textures and models like trees , rocks , houses, NPCs) and even some FFXIII/XIV stuff they could patch together a brand new game with little to no new art (but new events and character heads obviously). This could be a sort of "budget FF16" but it STILL wouldn't get started on until 2018 and it would also still probably take 3 years which still puts it closer to a PS5 title at this point.

I'd be surprised if we get FF16 in my lifetime.
Ayyyy

Edit: we have VIIr and KH III so tough call. We are more likely to see XV-2 than we are XVI. That way, SE can squeeze everything out of the road trip mechanics etc, perfect the battle system and add whatever they couldn't in XV. Think like that and XVI is its own new adventure sporting an entirely new system. PS 5 launch to early life title.

Yes. But it will be cross generational. Probably positioned so that they can pull a GTA and release it right before next gen launches so they can re-sell it again at full price.

With KH3 and FFVIIr on the docket, I really doubt it. They'll be pushing it to get all of the VIIr chapters out before the next generation, honestly.

I'm really hoping for some substantial DLC for Final Fantasy XV. There's a lot of room for clarification and expansion in that game's narrative. I think it would really benefit from another 10-15 hours of gameplay through the DLC.

I don't think I even know what "this generation" qualifies as anymore. What if in 2019 they decide to make a new upgraded PS4. Does it still count as "this generation" as long as it is PS4 and not PS5, even if said system is a lot more powerful?

That said, by what I think OP means, I doubt it. With FFVII and probably FFXV sequels coming.

This has been my hope. Instead of starting from scratch when starting a new game, which usually I don't falt. But with increased dev times these days, I feel like they should really just build off what they have created with XV, it's a good/great game. If they build on what they have now for XVI, it could be close to a masterpiece.it

I understand your concern but I think mid gen iterations will only be happening once. So once a new console is out, it will get a mid gen upgrade, which serves as the basis for the next mainline release. Of course, this is just logical speculation on my part.

Nope, but when FFXVI does arrive on PS5 & Xbox Next, the gameplay, even open-world, will look as good as this, if not better, in native 4K.

Indeed. I'm hoping for a Season Pass 2 or something on top of what we get in the first.

We haven't had a brand new idea for a mainline FF since 14, and you'd have to go back 10 years to see a new idea for an offline one.

As much as I really want something new, I think SE is comfortable coming out with the 7 remake, DQXI, and KH3 in the short term, they have things to focus on instead to make money. And if we take their comments about no XVI in development, it will be a long ass time. Well into the next gen is my guess, kinda like XV now.

Would be nice to have more than 1 main FF title this gen, but don't really mind it it doesn't happen. Games take more time and effort to make now compared to past FFs, so I'll understand if it doesn't happen and XV is fantastic for me so far, so if they need the time for XVI and that means next gen, I'm fine with it.

We are getting quite a lot though as people have said, FF7R, KH2.8, KH3, Dissidia, Type 1 possibly?, DQXI (May be interested), Nier automata (could be intefested). So honestly pretty happy with SEs planned output for this gen as it is. TWEWY 2 could happen too.... (believe... I'd be surprised if it's this gen though).

Most likely PS5. I feel like Square is putting all their work in FF7:Re and Kingdom Hearts 3 now.

This gen has maybe another good 4 years if it's going to be a longer one.

Get used to Noctis and Cloud for a while.

It would have had to have been in active development for at least a year to have any chance. Which means it was in preproduction during during the big development ramp up of the 15 revision at least 2 years ago. Meanwhile, they want to print money by selling people a remake and splitting it across 4 games over several years. So the answer is almost assuredly no.

Considering VIIr and KH3 both still have to be made and are both over a year out at the very least there's no way XVI will happen this generation unless we get another way too long generation.

I'm hoping FF16 stars Agnis. My rules for it though:

1. Keep with the junkyard/middle eastern themes.
2. Give me a bunch of kick-ass treasure hunts in midst of a desert full with magical artifacts.
3. Fill a desert with white or red sands. Hell maybe blue sands cause fantasy.
4. Keep magic limited, but give a stronger equivalent of magic in the game like using artifacts sort of like the anime Magi or something like that.
5. Make Agnis full of personality and no fan service. Personality and a serious character like Fang. Or someone determined like Yuna.
6. Have a primarily female cast with maybe 1 or 2 guys. Make characters vary in age, hell I'd love a grandma who kicked ass and was a lancer or something.
7. Try and fit a serious take on genies as a plot point, seems sort of fitting.
8. Add some Indian and Egyptian vibes in.
9. Don't make the world huge for no reason, make a smaller open world game but fill it with unique landscapes, towns, cities, and caves to explore. Quality open world > big open world.
I dunno, I just want something different then the futuristic cities/european fantasy setting. Deserts can be a ton of fun if done right.

0% chance of happening unless this gen goes like 4+ years more

2017's a lock.
2018's a lock--most of the 1st party titles Sony showed us probably won't even pop up until 2018.
I wouldn't bet on new systems in 2019 either.

So three years is almost a given. Now 2020 you might have something.

But it's amazing how people are willing to believe that ND could get something besides TLOU2 out but have no faith in S-E. XVI should already be in pre-production.

Sadly no, but even then I'm more concerned about a 16 having a competently executed story with lots of great and diverse characters.

Well I mean, it did sorta take square 11 years to make one game.

I'm joking but I also know people actually think this way.

I really hope it doesn't. SE should just stop trying to make games look so good and just make them fun to play and decently written, IMO. This is a big reason why it'll take so long, in theory.

Nope. 10 years just to get out FFXV. Still have to deliver on the other big titles (KH 3 and FF7R) along with other smaller projects. I'm starting to think that mainline Final Fantasy may be a once per generation type deal for SE.

No, and I don't even want it this generation.

This gen we get XV, VIIr, KH3 and DQ11. And probably XV-2. XVI can definitely wait til next gen.

Yes, there was an interview somewhere that mentioned he was involved in the tweaks that were happening to the game. He's mentioned here and he is listed as a supervisor here. Ah, and here is the interview.

I wouldn't take those interviews as word. It seems like SE is trying to make it sound as though the west didn't know about the International Edition. All those so called game balance, gambit improvements and treasure placements have been changed in the International edition. It also contradicts when they say they want to focus on visuals, audio and music.

Anyway, why should we trust Ito or Matsuno to take the next FF? Matsuno has said numerous times that he's not interested in doing big games anymore. And he clearly couldn't handle the stress the first time round. Ito has been missing for the past 10 years. Managing game development has changed to much over the decade. I rather he just remain as battle director and concentrate on coming up with battle systems.

Doubt it with FF15 only just being released and then they have Kingdom Hearts 3 and FF7 Remake on the go too, so very unlikely the next main FF game will be out this gen.

With how fast Square have been working lately, I'm doubting we will see KH 3 and FF7 remake this gen.

I think it's unlikely. They're going to focus on VIIr and KH3 and we'll probably get one new mainline FF at the end of this gen (cross gen with PS5). I hope I'm wrong though, I'd love to have XVI sooner rather than later.

YES YESS YESSSA!!!!

plus Im hoping for a plot regarding extrimism and religous conflict. I dont think AAAs have tackle that kind of issue yet

I guess the first question is, when do you think there will be a new generation?

Because given how loose that term is about to become, I think we'll definitely see it in a few years.

Yeah, I'd be totally for all of that.

I mean, we don't need, nor could SE make, nor would it be possible to have a large PS5 game with the kind of detail that the demo "Witch Chapter 0" had.

That was over 63 million polygons per scene / frame and ran on a PC workstation with four GTX Titan X Maxwell cards SLI'd

eZN0swh.png

A game with THAT kind of detail might take 10-15 years to make, lol.

However, a FF game with something like Agni's Philosophy level of detail with better textures, resolution and lighting should be doable on consoles in the early-to-mid 2020s. I wouldn't expect SE to abandon making games that look "so good". Yet a certain level of compromise and reasonable-ness is clearly needed in development.

FF16 dreamlist for this gen?

Sure here goes

1. Pls nothing to do with Agnis...tired of aiming towards hyper realism
2. Amano , uematsu, Guch
3. a lush world conceptually driven by Amano
3. No main character
4. focus more on the adventure and less on sappy drama and overly messy contrived mythos
5. Characters over the age of 21
6. interesting character designs not created just to sell a clothing line
7. A large expansive world
9. no silly designs just there to be overly stylized with no tangible purpose for existing...ie dont let Nomura go near it
10. Giant Airships...and one you can pilot again...like really pilot
11. Mystery > convoluted mythologies..the secret to being a bore is to tell everything

oh and no American Express ads in a game where a place called America doesnt even exist

This + an actual rpg battle system. No need for turn by turn, but something based on handling the group versus a straight action game with messy cameras.

But more importantly, i swear, it would be sooo fucking heathly for SE if they said to themself, we have to be able to produce 3 independent, main ff in a generation" like they did on PS1.

It should be doable if they managed their ambition, didn't try to reinvent the wheel each time, or create a fucking new engine and use every new shiny techs in the book. It's really a matter of priority.

nope, well actually it depends on whether or not this gen ends up being a traditional console gen and not an iterative one like many are suspecting,

Square-Enix have too much coming out in the next few years to warrant FFXVI yet

I think so.
KHIII is being developed by Team Osaka, and VII Remake is mostly outsourced.
FFXV is also selling well, the wprd of mouth seems good and at the moment FF as a brand is relevant again, they have to capitalize on this pretty soon or they'll fall out of the radar once again.
At least half if not more of the XV team (not only BD2, i'm sure they brought in many more in this last month of developement) will be freed up.
They have an engine that is mostly mature, instead of being developed together with the game, that can be used for new titles.
They also have a tighter structure opposed to previous titles, so i hope it pushes things faster.
It's obviously still in pre-production, if not even a mere conceptual phase.
Hope they enter full production next year.
Still, i can see it being released in the last year of the gen, probably 2019, with a re-release on PS5 the year after.
No idea who's in the main core though, i guess Toriyama (i seriously hope it's not directing and just relegated to event director/cutscenes guy), and i'd love to say Ito but man, there are still so many toilets to clean in SE offices.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the saga, so i expect them to announce it via the usual CGI trailer.
