Do You Want The Xbox Controller Go Through A Significant Change?

Do I want them to? No. Right now, it's one of the most comfortable controllers out there and I would much prefer Microsoft just fine tune a few things. Improve that D-Pad, fix up the battery, and they have a solid controller.

Will they? Yeah, probably. A "revolutionary" controller has been rumored for Durango/720, and I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to work in some new things.

Touch screen/pad may be OK depending on how it's used, but I mainly just want a jump similar from Xbox to Xbox 360 or Genesis 6 button to Saturn: iron out weak points of the design, maybe make it feel a bit fresher and add a few new things, but otherwise leave the overall layout and form generally the same. Just like I'll defend the DualShock or Pro Controller design I'll defend this, I like having multiple controller options in case one's a better fit for a game than another, even if it's just a subtle improvement.

D-Pad absolutely must be fixed though, and hopefully a "fix" doesn't mean "take it off entirely" (though with the PS4 I find that unlikely).

I want it to be exactly the same.

Wait. Exactly the same with a better d-pad.

Exactly the same with a better (e.g. usable) d-pad and better (e.g. flatter and less pebble-like) face buttons.

Having an internal Lithium battery would be nice. I've always hated how the rumble on 360 pads is actually a rattle. due to the battery cover.

So, you guys don't care or want a screen/touchpad? With all this influence about mobile gaming, it's interesting Nintendo and Sony followed suit to various degrees. Will MS be better off without it? I don't see the harm in it, but I know people love the 360 controller to fathom change

I feel that MS doesn't have the tech in the mobile space to make that practical nor do I feel it's that important. I do think the idea of perfecting a pointer controller in conjunction with Kinect would however revitalize their IP. Imagine Halo, gears, crackdown, alan wake, and well over half of MS properties using an advanced, perfected pointer that can also detect depth and in some cases, your whole body if relevant.

MS console is a shooter centric device with tons and tons of other games that would be helped by it, unlike Nintendos console. Even Viva pinata would be aided by this device, it's mind boggling to think MS would pass on this shot to basically give a new (and better) way to control their games while costing them almost nothing to do so. They could steal the Wii thunder while retaining their Kinect functions and core gamer controls all at once.

I feel alone here though, so I doubt MS will bother.

Really, I don't even care that much for a new d-pad. I mean, honestly, the d-pad is mainly just used for item/weapon selection in most games nowadays anyway. Wouldn't really bother me if they kept the d-pad as is.

Maybe make the battery life for the controller a bit longer but other than that I have no complaints.

You like the rounded buttons more than the flat? It's less comfortable and more squishy.
It's the texture I'd want more, that ends up being more comfortable if I need to use my index finger with them than the hard plastic.

No, just a better d pad. Also improve the damn wireless so it doesn't disconnect so often and provide official rechargeable packs that aren't garbage. Other than that the current controller is almost perfection.

Absolutely not. It's the best console controller that has ever been created, why screw with it beyond touching up what's already in place?

How is a touchscreen an added benefit? It's a distraction and a lousy input method.

By fixing the absolutely terrible hard-bubble face buttons.

Also they should put a rechargeable battery like other normal decent console manufacturers these days.

Also, get rid of the Fisher Price coloring on the face buttons.

I wish Microsoft would bring back analog face buttons. I feel this generation was held back a bit, control wise, because they went digital. 3rd Party Multiplats did not take advantage of the PS3's analog buttons because of that it seems.

I want to be able to throw various touch passes in Madden....passes over the middle of the field, right over a MLB....just be able to throw all around the field really.

edit- this is presuming that those digital buttons for the PS4 rumors are false.

A good D-Pad and the controller shape being a little smaller / slimmer is all I'd need.
I don't really care about analog placement or motion controls being there or not.

Better dpad. Otherwise no. Best controller.

If Wii U has taught me anything. DONT put a screen on it. Nothing that makes me look down from the TV. Nothing that gives developers an option to force me to look down at the controller. Sony did it right with the Touchpad.

Yep. It really is astonishingly annoying to be forced to look away from the TV. I liked the rayman demo but started to get annoyed when I had to look down at the dinky-ass pad. I have a 57" TV for a reason.

I prefer to use my eneloop batteries on the 360, can you even change the battery in the ps3 pads (serious question)

I believe the PS4's buttons are digital now, so third party games wouldn't use them even if the 720 had them. I agree, they're quite useful in certain situations.

Hell no. It's a system that has been using the color for button prompts for over a decade. The new black controller w/ d-pad is so much better than that two tone original. What I do hope is that all controllers work with PC via USB and that the rechargeable batteries are Li on (this would add significant cost but they would work for years).

EDIT: and no to analog buttons. Why add cost to a feature that doesn't benefit a single game. In madden you can just tie the length of a button press to strength of throw.

I want the bumpers to change. They feel very useless to me right now.

The click on them is very hard and plastically. It's not a very satisfying button to use and feels cheap.

R1/L1 are much better but I like the triggers on the 360 WAY more.

Yeah I do like the 360 triggers too.

I'm not sure how they end up changing it (if they do) to make RB/lb more useful.

Better d-pad.
No battery pack at the back. (rechargeable or something)

I'll be happy with that.

I'd be down for no battery pack. I like the idea of anything that makes the controller lighter in weight. I love using my friend's 360 controller with the rumble-thingies and battery pack removed because it is so lightweight.

Face buttons are too round
Bumpers are too clicky and hard to reach
Triggers have too much travel distance
D-pad is horrid

Seriously though, think about Windows 8, how the current xbox 360 controller is what works with every game, how it's integrated into the OS..

I think there's 2 options:

1) New controller, very similar to the old one but with the new wireless tech. New xbox requires it but new PC ports still work with previous 360 controller.

2) they stick with what's virtually the same controller

no way they'll introduce a new all-microsoft controller that they try to push into the PC ecosystem all over again.

Hilarious to see people talk about painful buttons.

Do you play for 30 hour stretches button mashing?

Have you ever used your hands to do anything physical or do you just live in a cell with your electronics?

I can't even imagine the buttons being painful without either some sort of nerve disorder, or mental breakdown.

Better d-pad and flat face buttons. Apart from that I love it.

I wish they would make it more comfortable to hold.

My hands always hurt after 1 hour of playtime.

I'm the opposite - the DS3 gives me pains after a while. I guess there's always going to be losers with controller designs.

Better D-pad, make the triggers a bit more like the ones from the Gamecube (with the click sound, that rocked!). I'd hope they would still make it easily supported on the PC. Make the bumpers feel nicer. Analog face buttons. Perhaps also a more significant addon, but I cannot imagine what I would want now.

Curses, last post.

A small trackball on the place of the guide button might be cool, but I do not see that happen nowadays, and a touchpad would be more likely.
