Do your friends notice things like bad iq, framerate, screen tearing, etc?

My friends notice when a game isn't 60fps. They also notice games that can't keep a 30fps on lock. They know what "bad IQ" and screen tearing are and don't give a fuck about them.

Mechanics are what they're all about. If a game isn't fun within 15 mins, they're completely uninterested. Makes selling things like W101 and Dark Souls impossible.

We're old.

Does not compute. w101 and dark souls would appeal to people who love mechanics before anything else. Don't see what age has to do with it, except that those are games that harken back to an age of player discovery and development of skill being looked at as a positive.

I don't think people know the exact names but I think they know what it is if you show it to them. A lot of people call framerate drops "lag", doesn't mean that frame drops aren't important. Loads of people think COD is "smoother", doesn't mean they don't like 60FPS.

Screen tearing seems like somehing thag occurs less and less. People notice laggy but not iq.

I definitely have a group of friends that notice but the rest just say if it is fun or not.

My friend doesn't notice at all. When I try pointing it out or showing him a comparison, he says I'm crazy, says I'm picky or just calls me a damn moron.

I remember the first time I ever noticed screen tearing. It was in Jak II.

I also remember the first time I noticed framerate dips, which was in the PS2 port of Half-Life 1. That game was like a slideshow at times.

Honestly, none of my friends notice, or maybe they do and don't realize what they are seeing. I really do envy their ignorance. Neogaf ruined me by introducing me to sub-resolution, tearing, dithering, ect...

I turned off vsync for a couple of friends playing CoD and both thanked me for making the game run smoother, so yes? :P

I didn't notice until I started dwelling on how games work.
I kind of miss that.
That said, some do(the most informed ones), some don't and I have no interest in ruining the experience to those who don't.

I think this agrees with many posters I've read:

My friends, on average, like video games but it's a diversion from their life. As such, they might recognize screen tearing, severe stutter (which, yes, they refer to as "lag), or occasionally muddy textures.
Overall, however, I think most people are hip to what's "big". We can see pages of issues with GTAV but the 1B dollars came primarily from people who "just don't give a fuck." At the end of the day, the people move en masse and reason has little to do with it. They can be moved to enjoy technically brilliant games or inferior games, to them this stuff just doesn't matter... generally.

Flash colorful graphics and "cool designs" and people pay attention. Tell them the game runs at 60FPS and all they hear is "flashy."
Personally, I do notice much of this and while it CAN diminish my enjoyment, what matters most is whether the game is fun mechanically and that isn't diminished by any technical issue.
I get super geeked out when I see a game running smooth but I might also notice it has less world objects or meshes, primarily square pathing, and other "cheats" so often the "geeked out" is countered. I love that newer consoles have the power to emulate older ones (like the PSP running CPS1/2 games, Ouya being able to play like...EVERY arcade game I played as a kid) and so I do enjoy when we see technical tricks.

My friends only care that they have someone to play or that it entertains them for a few weeks.

It's a matter of perspective and I wouldn't expect them to even CARE if I told them "There's a site where all this stuff is argued for 1000 pages of comments." They would blow me off and talk about something I care less about... like perhaps some Reality TV show or something. Most...not all. -Adam

I don't even notice bad framerate unless its really bad like when its a slideshow. When it comes to games like GTAV, it boggles my mind that someone can pick out things like AA and framerate. I hate screen tearing tho.

My friends dont care at all and never talk about it.

A few them know about frame data from playing fighting games but they don't apply it to other genres. Usually, graphics are just classed as good or bad.

My old roommate's PS3 games used to constantly stutter. I was always the one to bring it up. And then I figured out the problem. The asshole would get his fingerprints all over the bottom of the discs, causing the problem. He eventually started to hate the stuttering and kept his damn hands off the bottom of the disc.

I barely notice those things. I only notice framerate when im playing League of Legends and it fluctuates from 35-60 on my Mac

Outside of things like serious framerate drops (though I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 30 and 60fps), I would rarely if ever notice any of these issues. But then, my eyesight is ridiculously bad, so that's not exactly surprising.

only the ones who interact with both consoles and are fairly into games will notice AND care

most of my friends when talking about games have brought up complaints on visual bugs/glitches, graphical/mechanical inconsistencies or things they wish were a bit better looking/more realistic

I think most people are aware of it subconsciously and it affects their overall experience and perception of the game but not consciously and not noticeably when things are marginal.

They do know about it and notice it, one of them even called out the "PS2-level grass textures" on GTA V, but procceeded to say: "Thank God all I care about is that the game is fun" and call me a freak who thinks I care about good graphics and not how fun the game is.

While I don't necessarily disagree with him, I love me some good image quality and stable framerates. People love to go watch movies on the "Big Screen" (TM), right? This is just the same.

Screen tearing really drives me up a wall. I can deal with lower framerates, though. Especially during physics heavy stuff like when you destroy 10 barrels in Demon's Souls. That doesn't really bother me but if a game has bad tearing I have trouble playing it.

I don't even notice it, let alone my friends who only open the 360 disc tray once a year to put in this year's COD.

Funny you say that. Almost all regular CoD players appreciate 60fps, even if they can't properly articulate why. They will say things like it feeling "smoother", "faster" or "less laggy" than other console shooters.

Casuals know the difference. And Activision knows they know.

Never notice it. Always been gameplay first so a lot of that stuff doesnt matter to me. Only if it's extremely apparent would i notice it

No.
Neither did I before I went mustard race.

I lent my Wii to a friend last week so he could play through Skyward Sword, and I kinda' apologized in advance for the low resolution everything. Days later, he doesn't understand what I was talking about. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

I haven't been a pc gamer for about 10 years now. So not really. Unless the framerate is really bad, it doesn't bother me.

But I definitely notice 720p to 1080p.

Some notice it, but just don't care. Others don't notice it, or don't mention noticing it. If I remember right, I thought I had heard a long time ago that some people simply don't see things like screen tearing though? Why would it matter if other people do or do not notice these things though? People talk about it on GAF because we notice it, and we care about it and how it affects our enjoyment of games. We don't talk about it because it may make the game experience worse for other people. In other words these things may not make a difference to the masses, but it makes a difference to us, and that is why we talk about it so passionately, and will continue to do so.

I think some people make the mistake of assuming we talk about hardware advantages like it will be the deciding factor in the console generation, but that isn't what it tends to be about, at least not for me, and not from what I have observed in tech threads.

Yup, we all do, with varying levels of frustration. Whenever these threads pop up I'm just amazed at how many people can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps or 720P and 1080P or what AA means. To me, not knowing the difference between all of that is like not knowing the difference between red and green. I guess that's because I've been gaming all my life that these things become much more noticeable to me.

i dont notice either until i read it on a forum then i fin myself looking for it and end up noticing it lol but other then that no none of them notice
