DOA5: Lei Fang vs Zack

what the hell at the cut-ins and cutscenes, are fighting games gonna be like that for the next 10 years?

The powerblows? You'll rarely see them in a match between good players.

The stage events? DoA has had those for years, just not as elaborate.

And, I'd say, fighting games have had a version of the powerblow in one way or another dating back to KoF. Even the original Soul Blade had something comparable.

Lei Fang still has that goofy stance. Weird that she's fighting Zack.

I guess they're saving Jann Lee for the
Pai reveal

Jann Lee also happens to be DOA director Shimbori's favorite character. When he's ready to reveal him (likely at E3), it'll probably be done with style.

lets hope they remain rare occurances. It's cool first time around but after the Nth time it's probably annoying.

Why still no customizable costumes/gears? That would be really awesome imo.

Ehhh... Maybe. I've always enjoyed the fact that DOA's alt costumes actually look like solid DESIGNS, instead of the jumbled, poorly fitting mess that something like Tekken offers.

Soul Calibur is kind of a middle of the road most of the time, with moments of greatness, and VF seems to do the custom outfits best, as the outits look like they actually fit the character bodies, more often then not.

But DOA generally gives you an army of costumes (even a decent amount for the men), while actually making them all look as good as, say, Tekken's bettwe 2nd player alts.

Hope we see a return of the Tecmo's deception alts the series has had for Ayane and Helena, those were always pretty nice...

Lei Fang looks pretty good, even in that somewhat awkward outfit. Glad to see her traditional dress is here too, and I actually like this goofy suit more in motion, that in those scans. She's always had a few "naughty" outfits, though her personality never seems to go in that direction...

Zack looks pretty good too, he's definitely ZACK. (I hope he still has his "A Legend began at this moment!" victory line in there, nice moment of semi-seriousness from him). He does look a bit light-skinned, but maybe it's a lighting thing?

I never had an issue with "moving hazards" either, they always seem to be suprisingly manageable, like they're much more about spectacle, rather than actual danger. If you get hit by one, it's mostly because you were actually set up into it, rather than just a random occurance. Good to hear the "hazards OFF" thing was in the demo though. (Hey, is that demo ever going free and public, or still tied to Nin3 only... bleh.)

Anyway, it's great to see some subtle emotion on the DOA's cast faces. While I'm still wary of DOA w/o Itagaki, they seem to have tapped into this series' spirit fairly well.

So of lei's animations are weird.

She's always been like that, heh. But yeah.

Is there any info on how they work? If they're counterable then I can't see them being all that much of a threat.

Yes, they are counterable. They can also be sidestepped.

They are really only going to be useful for baiting counters.

The damage on a powerblow is probably going to be less than you'd get for a hi counter throw or juggle.

But they're going to destroy counter happy scrubs online. :)

To quote myself from a previous topic:

They're really not that bad.

They play them up for these trailers, but in reality, the "Power Blows" are basically glorified charge-attacks. They can be side-stepped, blocked, countered and are so situational, that the best thing they're used for is basically to bait your opponent (thanks to how the user can cancel the PBs with sidesteps) and punish.

As for the slow down? What happens during those moments is that you actually have like 2-3 seconds to choose where you want to direct where your opponent flies after the attack. So, if you are in range of a Danger Zone, you could send your opposition careening that way.

Edit: HAH! This time Skilletor got the Hi-Counter! 8D

Who likes circus and clowns hands up.

I thought so.

Every time someone will pick this stage online I will commit suicide.

Zack is acting like that Black guy(sorry I forgot his name) from the latest season of the Tester.

Anyway love the stage and looking forward to more videos.

Woah this is prob. the first game since World Heroes I think that has background hazards.
...and Real Bout 2 doesn't exactly count...

Pretty much all the DOA games have them. DOA4 had a stage where dinosaurs would attack you if you got knocked closed to them, and another stage that took place on the streets of Shibuya, complete with cars speeding towards you that will hit your character if you don't move out of the way.

I'm hoping this is the anti-NG3; I haven't been excited for a DoA title in years and this is actually looking pretty exciting.

DOA2U had the stage with the Tiger and DOA4 changed it to a cheetah, and that was Vegas in DOA4 -_-
you think they would put the Halo Warthog in Shibuya?

One feature I wish they would add to this is the ability to ban certain characters, much like what SFIII does on PSN/XBLA. It's a genius idea and I wish more fighting games would copy it.

Jann Lee also happens to be DOA director Shimbori's favorite character. When he's ready to reveal him (likely at E3), it'll probably be done with style.

I know other DoA players don't think this, but IMO Jann Lee is already overpowered if the player knows not to finish off his combos to leave him open. There's a reason why 95% of the DoA4 players will pick a ninja, Jann Lee, or Zack. They are easy to win with.

I just hope this means he's not some sort of overpowered character in DoA5.

Because they're both Chinese women with a similar hairstyle? She looks the most similar in the new style to the old designs to me.

Pretty sure Lei Fang has had this win quote since doa1.

I wonder if that winning animation is so similar because DoA1 runs no the same engine as VF2.

Well DOA has been like that since DOA2 on the DC. . . so. . .

Those environmental hazard scenes weren't quite as disruptive to the gameplay as we see here though.

Well done, Team Ninja, the character models look terrific (except Hitomi) - Day 1!

I hope Jann Lee and Helena will be revealed soon. Can't wait to see them.

I need this game. I really hope those framerate drops are gone in the final version.

The demo runs near flawless on PS3. Character introductions and Winning poses run at 30 frames, gameplay runs at 60. There are no framerate drops in that video, just slow motion power blows. You can never judge performance from watching something on Youtube anyway.
