Dodonpachi: Daifukkatsu announced

This is a couple days old, but I searched.
The fifth DoDonPachi will be shown to the world at AOU in less than 2 weeks.

So what IS Dodonpachi (aside from a vertical shmup)? They were gushing about it on Retronauts, but I've never played it. :(

By all accounts it's a largely generic Cave shooter.

But that's the last thing on your mind when you're playing it. The most perfectly balanced (as in really, really hard - but not Japanese teen prodigy hard) and rewarding shmup i've ever played.

This thread is quiet.....too quiet.

Minimalist or maximalist?

If 95% of the screen isn't for some reason on fire, you're doing something wrong.

And most of that is incoming.

Wow.

Last silly question: which one should I begin with?

If you're new to the genre, DonPachi is slower and less manic, and a good way to ease you into the chaining mechanic.

But if you think you can handle it, jump right on in with DoDonPachi. Maybe the finest shmup of all time.

It's a series of bullet hell shmups created by Cave. It's arguably the best shmup series of all time. Play it!!

Also, this better get a home release, or there will be hell to pay!! THE KING IS BACK

(I just realised I don't have Dodonpachi PS2...why the fuck not?)

Saw this earlier today and decided to celebrate by dancing around in some bullet hell. Can't wait to see the sheer amount of insanity that they throw on the screen!

I just hope they nail the soundtrack this time. I'm total a sucker for Thunderforce style synth heavy butt rock - the epic pointing out from a windswept clifftop stuff, whereas DDP has gone more techno-y.

Holy shit, a new DDP.

God damnit CAVE, start porting your games to consoles already.

Also, WHERE IS MY MUSHIHIMESAMA FUTARI CONSOLE VERSION YOU GODDAMN BASTARDS!

platform? PS2? mobile phones?
I could make some snide remark here, but the answer is Arcade. Or are you joking? Coping with the rage and disappointment caused by another Cave game you may never get to play? I know that feeling.

I haven't played them, I just watched the youtube videos and wondered what platform was the game, nothing more.

The mobile phones part was a joke yep :P

Saturn or arcade by most accounts. Haven't really heard much about the PS1 version - I guess it should be fine if you can play JAP imports.

Never released for PS2, DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou was though (The fourth game, the third was arcade only), doesn't touch DDP in my opinion but it might be more available.

DKnight, the PS1 version is generally considered the better port of the two. Have no worries. It'll cost you more than the Saturn though.

This is true. I have both Saturn and PSone versions and the PSone game is a bit better.

Cleaner graphics and lesser slowdown. Although the differences are pretty minimal tbh, they are there.
If only choosing one version go go the PSone version, even though it costs quite a bit more.

And on the topic of a new DDP: OMG OMG OMG :D

Now If only I'd ever seen any of the series in an arcade any time in my life this would be sweet.

Preferred DoDon to Dai Ou Jou, it was just more enjoyable.

There was more than two? Four?! :O

Donpachi
Dodonpachi
Dodonpachi II: Bee Storm
Dodonpachi Daioujou
and now, Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu

Personally, Daioujou is my favorite, but the others (aside from Bee Storm) are great. Bee Storm is serviceable, but due to some slight issues, it never really is elevated among the rest of the series.

Oh, I though that was a rehash, not a sequel. Well I'll look for the PS1 version (no saturn here :()

If you want to try the game out before investing, there's always MAME.

(and nobody bash me for that, these games get low print runs in Japan and never get released in the U.S. I have no other way to play.)

Seeing as how Cave will likely never work on a home port again I'm not sure if I should be excited about this.
It'd be different if I lived in Japan I guess.

Also knowing Cave they'll manage a way to make this game harder than Daijoujou(which is already pretty much impossible after stage 3)...shame. I still think Dodonpachi has the best balance in terms of difficulty(or maybe I'm just pining for the days of Dangun, ESP Ra De, Guwange, Progear, etc).

Yeah, I think DDP and Ra.De. are probably the easiest games for an average-level shmup player. I would say Galuda, but the difficulty ramps up excessively on the last stage.

Obligatory "CAVE PORT YOUR GAMES" post for me.

I love shooters such as Gradius V, Space Megaforce and Ikaruga but I'm trying to find out more about Cave's shooters. Problem is, they're hard to track down to play in the U.S., and if I understand correctly the only way is to import them or play them through MAME. Here's what I found with regards to ports from Wikipedia:

DonPachi (1995) - Arcade (USA, Japan, Korea), with ports for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation(Japan)
DoDonPachi (1997) - Arcade (Japan), with ports for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation(Japan)
DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou (2002) - Arcade (Japan, Asia), with a port released for the PlayStation 2 by Arika (Japan)
Espgaluda (2003) - Arcade (Japan), with a port released for the PlayStation 2 by Arika (Japan)
Mushihime-sama (2004) - Arcade (Japan), with a port released for the PlayStation 2 by Taito Corporation (Japan)
Ibara (2005) - Arcade (Japan), with a port released for the PlayStation 2 by Taito Corporation (Japan)

Does this seem right? Which ones are considered the best? And finally, are any of these obtainable at a decent price for importing?

It's right as far as I can tell. I don't know which one is considered best generally, but my favourite on that list is ESPgaluda. Depending on what you consider a "decent" price you could get it here.

There's also this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-JLyxifS4E

You know something is wrong when you see a player of that caliber slinging bombs like that.

this is beyond ridiculous :D

one single snapshot of this game has more enemy bullets in it than the total amount shot in every shoot em up produced in the 80's and early 90's COMBINED !
They should just show you a game over screen as soon as you push start :D

Oh, but I know if i ever saw one, i wouldn't let it win http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzWmuCbOXjY&feature=related

As a newcomer, the best you can get is the PSX port of Dodonpachi, and for PS2, Espgaluda or Mushihimesama. Both very accessible. Ibara is, despite its fantastic presentation, a very unique and eccentric game (in terms of score mechanics and difficulty). Dai Ou Jou is HARD.

great resurrection, or something to that effect? i'm extrapolating from 'hitler no fukkatsu.' anyway,

Espgaluda is a fantastic beginner's shooter, and one of Cave's easiest games. The end ramps up, but everything prior is pretty kind. It's fantastic, too, and maybe my favorite shooter ever. Arika did a phenomenal job with the port, too.

Ibara is the first Cave shooter designed by ex-Raizing designer Shinobu Yagawa. As a result, it's a Raizing game with Cave's label. Like most Raizing shooters, it's fantastic, but it does tons of things that Cave games typically don't. Less bullet heavy, larger hitbox, meaner all around. Serious visibility hell if you don't play it in tate. Great game, but lots of Cave fans don't/wouldn't like it.

goddamnit, I hope you're right.

Way I see it is that the most likely case would be Arika showing interest in making a port, and the Wii would be the target since Arika is anal and the Wii is the only console that can do it perfectly resolution-wise. And that would make for the second game on the Wii I'd care about.

Then again, maybe Taito would publish a 360/PS3 port. Could go anywhere, could go nowhere.

well, ps2 daioujou came out of nowhere -- at that point several cave shooters had gone unported, it wasn't clear where console shmups could go, and arika's involvement was a surprise

Awesome news!! Very excited to see what this will be like.

Gotta admit, though, that my favourite Cave shooter is Guwange. Love the presentation and artwork. Lots of fun, too, and not totally bonkers impossible for the less nimble fingered such as myself.
