Does anyone else get angry from people whispering?

I used to mumble a lot. I still do occasionally. It's mostly talking to myself and rarely insulting anyone else. I'll walk away from a conversation and be like "man, I'm tired" or "that wasn't so bad" and people mistake me for mumbling negatively about them when I turn my back.

So because of this I had a guy in my church group, of all places, in high school who would beat the shit out of me when I mumbled. I couldn't stop, I still did it because it was part of my speech and behavior, but something about it made him see red. Even with teachers or fellowship members around he would burst out, so everyone can hear, "JESUS CHRIST, CAN YOU STOP MUMBLING!?"

I wonder if he ever got counseling.

The only time it bothers me is when somebody is whispering so loudly that everyone can hear them and they might as well be speaking normally.

Oh rest assured, it will reach a point where I will deal with it one of these days.

Yes, I think this is due wearing hearing aids though. Whispering sounds too much like the wind blowing into the hearing aids and it's a very obnoxious sound.

I get the same thing, but with the "Staaay Caaalm" voice.
It sends me in a frothing rage in about 0.5 seconds.

Oh yeah, like that sound it makes? The high pitched swishing sound we make in lowered voices? Like shispsshiwishshwshwis kind of sound? Is that the sound that makes you want to hit things? That slight whistling siwisesshisewisseiwssh noise?

Is that the one you're talking about?

Gaf getting even more crazy. I wonder what thread will be next?

"Gaf does anyone get so angry at the being angry threads that they want to punch their computer screen?"

Misophonia?

Misophonia, literally "hatred of sound", is a rarely diagnosed neuropsychiatric disorder in which negative emotions (anger, flight, hatred, disgust) are triggered by specific sounds. The sounds can be loud or soft. The term was coined by American neuroscientists Pawel Jastreboff and Margaret Jastreboff and is sometimes referred to as selective sound sensitivity syndrome.

Yes. I don't really want to punch somebody for it, but it makes me extremely annoyed.

At work we got a person who whispers a lot as if to not disturb people, but loudly. I can still hear the conversation clearly when I'm like 50 feet away, behind noise reduction panels. It gets on your nerves.

That sounds like it. There's something fundamentally different about from normal speech — beyond fewer decibels — and it really stands out. You're better off speaking normally, just not as loud as normal, if you don't want to be paid attention to. It's impossible to not focus on, whereas even certain loud background noises can be tuned out.

I remember hearing about how people with hearing implants being unable to ignore the sounds of fans or lights buzzing because the way the implants work, and I imagine it's something similar.

I'm a fan of ASMR and specifically listen to people whispering on YT for relaxation, so...the exact opposite of OP.

Can you listen to those while concentrating/focusing on something else?

I take it you're not a big fan of ASMR then? Shame, as it tends to be one of my common triggers for relaxation.

Actually I do.

My name starts with an "S" and whisper "S"s are the loudest. My mum would wake me up with that loud whisper plus the "S" in my name would cut into my "Zzz"s.

Basically, that whispered S-sound is like an alarm clock level of annoying.

Piddly problem, but I get OP.

I also get the mild irritations from constant sniffling and coughing (particularly, of course, when the environment is quiet like in a movie theatre or during a test; but not really at other times)

Whispering is childish, so no that wouldn't bother me...who the fuck whispers to each other?

What used to bother me was going into the break room at work, and the Spanish people that were speaking English until I walked in flipped the conversation switch and dropped into Spanish...

I have done those erotic hypnosis things before which utilize some aspects of ASMR, namely the sensuality and left audio - right audio swaps. Those do not have the same audible texture though as they are directed at the listener. And presumably if you're listening to that stuff in the first place, you're mentally ready for it. I imagine a lot of people sit in a chair and lie down while experiencing them.

I know exactly what you mean, except for me it's more like everyone just speaks Spanish all the time lol

I hate it, too, and don't even know why. But it goes back as far as I can remember. It angered me as a kid, it still peeves me off today.

It doesn't even make sense. D:

Why the fuck is everyone shaming the op for having a recognized disorder?

Not to undermine your defense of me (which is appreciated) but it's fine. It's a weird disorder and at the end of the day it is not harming me.

I have this too, but it can go either way. Some people's whispering gives me serious ASMR and I can just lay back and fall asleep. I think it's the more munchy, lip-smacky whispering that I like.

However, if it's more of a hushed talking, it drives me (bad) crazy and I have to leave the room.

Isn't it the same reason people get angry when others talk on the phone? Because the brain doesn't like it when it can't get the whole conversation or something.

This is a good point. Whispering sounds markedly different if it's happening in your periphery than if it's being directed at you. ASMR has given me an appreciation for how differently we can perceive sound depending on context. A sound that bothers you in your day to day can give you chills when it's right in your ear.

Yeah whispering in quiet places is a lot worse than normal speech because to me, it's just a high frequency noise which feels louder than if they had just used a normal speaking voice. Also, it generally continues longer if people think they are whispering and therefore either can't be heard or, if they are, are signalling to everyone that they are adhering to social norms and so can continue to talk through movies or in the library etc, so then there is a kind of obnoxiousness to it as well.

I don't hang out in public places much anyway so it isn't much of an issue for me, but for what it's worth to anyone - fuck whispering. Fuck whistling while I'm at it.

I don't get mad, but it's certainly an annoying noise. High pitched soft sssssssss edge to any whispering, it's an awful sound.
