Does anyone spend more than one hour on the road getting home from work?

Got a new job and after my 4th day, my assessment on the traffic in Redmond/Bellevue, WA is horrible. What should be a 30 minute drive back home turns into a one hour and 30 minute drive, and this is probably Monday-Friday (which is my schedule). It freakin' sucks...

I've tried different local ways and it's a no-go, it's busy everywhere. I'm gonna start looking into different methods of transportation to get to and from work.

Over an hour for me. Sometimes even 2 depending on traffic. I'm going from one end of the city to another. If I drove it would take 30-40 minutes top.

I did this for years, first for college, then for work, then for work again in a different city. All usually about an hour each way.

The upside? Audiobooks. And I actually found the commute to be very relaxing.

The last time, I ended up opting to bus instead of drive. Didn't really make any difference in terms of time, but it meant that I had a few options for keeping busy. Audiobooks, TV shows...I even write a short novella during my commutes.

I'm really, really happy to have that time back now, though.

My company has flexible work hours, and thank god it does, because half an hour difference in departure time can equate to an hour in commute time.

If I leave before 5am or after 9am, the trip is generally 40 minutes, which I'm fine with. If I leave between 6am and 8am, the trip is probably going to be 1:20 - 1:40, and sometimes over two hours.

People in Sydney who commute on the M5 know what I'm talking about. I basically plan my life around that motorway.

I go to a community college twice a week and the drive is about 45 minutes. My dad works out-of-state and it takes him 90 minutes each way. I have no idea how he does it, but on the plus side he gets to work from home of Fridays.

Everyday mon - fri I travel 64 miles round trip. Mornings take me about 45min - 1hr. Afternoons 1hr - 1.5hrs+.

Sucks but living check to check is a sacrifice.

I also get up at 4:30am to get to work and get home about 6:00pm.

ya, it really sucks.

Work is so mind numbing and useless, while I'm there I tell myself I'm gonna work on my portfolio and find a better job. After the commute I get home to tired to work on my portfolio, too tire to do anything. Then start it all over again the next day.

Not work, but when I went to class in Alexandria (outside of D.C.) I got out right as rush hour started. This meant that my 40 minute commute out took about 2 hours coming back.

Needless to say I experimented a lot with routes that semester.

edit: there was a guy at my job who commuted something like 120 miles one way to work. I think he had 4 hours of driving a day. Considering the pay for the occupation, I would've quit after like 3 days if it was that bad. There's a point where the difference in pay between some place closer is worth it just for the shorter commute.

Been doing that for almost 2 years at my current job. Depending on traffic it can take me anywhere from 45 minutes to 90+ minutes to get home from work. It was my first job out of college and I didn't have a lot of options so I took it to get some good experience. At first it wasn't that bad would usually listen to music from my phone or Spotify and the commute was tolerable but lately it has gotten worse with the extra traffic from road construction. Thankfully I am starting my new job next month and the commute will only be 20-30 minutes.

I live 2 blocks from my work, so 10 minutes to walk or 2 minutes to drive when its cold and dark out. Honestly, anything more than a 20 minute compute is a sign that you need to move. The quality of your life will improve significantly. Not to mention you will save a shit ton of money on gas and car costs

I'm afraid I'm headed down this road...

Gonna try to prevent it, however. Both Microsoft and Valve are in the Redmond area, and I plan on eventually working for one of them when I've completed my Computer Science degree. Just gotta get used to this type of commute, since there will be more of it to come.

I did that for a few years in college. Well, it was a little less than an hour, and it wasn't every day of the workweek so it wasn't as bad, but it is draining for sure. If I had to do that full time for work, I would probably seriously look into moving closer to my workplace.

I used to, but then I moved to be about a 12-15 min drive to work instead, all local roads. It was a very good decision. It was better for my life, my wife, and my kids. Instead of sitting in traffic for 1-1.5 hrs twice a day, my total combined commute is less than most peoples lunch break.

If/when I get another job at some other place that I know I will want to stick with for 5-10 years, I will definitely be looking to move within the same sort of distance to my new job. Commuting is just the ultimate waste of time.

Haha oh man my commute requires almost all transportation modes to get to work.

I drive my truck to the train station
I take train for an hour
I then ride my bike to a bus stop
Take the bus and then continue to ride my bike to work.

I wake up at 5:30-5:50am and i get to work at 8:15 to 8:30am.....fuck you california.

It's about an hour and a half drive between home and work. I don't mind the drive much, its the only time ever I get to be alone. Of course I complain about the drive to everyone I know, rather than let them know I actually enjoy it.

Traffic in Hawaii, Oahu specifically, sucks ass. Today I left my house at 6am and got to work at 815. If there was no traffic it would take 30 minutes.

Since you dont ride a boat or a plane to work, you fail.

Perhaps you should move or find a new job? That totally sounds like its not worth it.

3 hours/day, give or take. Not necessarily because of one long commute but a combo of traffic and dropping off/picking up our baby with family. Usually at least an hour in the morning, then another few hours at night.

Moving isn't an option, unless I convince my parents to move, too. The part of the commute that takes the longest is the closest to work. In the morning, it takes longer to go the last 5 miles than the other 30 miles. Same thing in the afternoon. Takes us a half hour or hour to get out of the 5 mi radius from work. The rest is a breeze.

Used to drive 100-200 mi a day, 7 days a week, for my last job, but it wasn't during rush hour so it didn't seem as bad.

When i do drive its about an hour and a half of traffic. Without traffic its 45 minutes :/

I sometimes like driving if i have a good audio book or a podcast. I do the same as you, i complain but sometimes its relaxing. While on the train it takes me longer but less of a headache as i can play on my vita or browse neogaf.

I've driven an hour to and from work for 10 years (Baltimore/Washington area). Pretty sure we came in #1 for traffic last year. On days when the traffic moves it is fine. I hate it, but I've gotten used to it. I'm looking to move out of state in a year or two though. Definitely won't miss the commute.

God no...my commute is on average 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. That's more than enough for me and I already hate having to drive in/home everyday.

Earlier this week I left my job later than I normally do (live in Hollywood but work in Burbank). When I leave in the mornings (around 9:30) it takes me about twenty minutes to get to work, but on that particular night I was stuck in traffic for over an hour. Just to get 7 miles on surface streets.

Fuck commutes, mine is like 5 minutes. In college I walked to school.

I don't care if I have to live in a shitty place, I don't want to waste my life in a car.

This will change later in life I'm sure.

I'm actually applying for a job which is one hour away...

...with my bike.

Do you guys think it is do-able every day? I'm obviously thinking about a car in the long run, but I'll have to do with my bike for the first few months.

Just over an hour on the way home. About thirty minutes in. Night time traffic is worse for some reason. You get used to it.

It takes about 70 minutes to get home from work but only half of that is actual driving time...maybe even less. Having to take shuttles over to the airport and all really chews up time. More so than the actual driving part which is mainly highway driving and driving on near empty streets because it's too early in the morning for rush hour.

That's up to you. If you think you could handle two hours of cycling a day.

Good exercise though.

Do they have showers at work? That would help.

I'm sorry, man. Seattle/Eastside traffic is just dreadful and it's gotten much worse since the 520 toll.

40-50 mins on average but can take more then an hour with bad traffic. Been doing it for almost 4 years, so sick of it, can't wait to find a new job

I take an hour and a half to two hours to get to school and another hour and a half to two hours to get back from school.

Feels bad man.
