Does anyone use "HDMI Device Link" on PS4 ? That shit turns off your console.

I turned this feature on maybe two weeks ago on my PS4, as it works very well on the Switch (it turns on my TV to the correct channel almost instantaneously alongside the console). While the PS4 does not turn on the TV as quickly as the Switch does, it worked well enough, so I left it on. But what it does on PS4 that it (seemingly) does not do on the Switch, is turn off your console when you turn off the TV. It just happened to me. My TV sometimes turns on with the volume not working (silent); it is fixed quickly by turning the TV off and turning it back on. It works all the time. When I did that minutes ago in the middle of a network test, the fucking console shut itself off. I replicated the issue to make sure I wasn't crazy.

That's real annoying. I get that not all TVs have the issue that mine have, but that's not really relevant. I should decide to turn off my console if I want; not itself. Maybe someone turned off the TV quickly to kill its sound, or maybe just to have it off for a brief moment while dining or going in the shower. Who knows.

In any case, I deactivated that feature.

Does anyone use it?

I use it since it lets the TV remote work with the PS4, making it easier for others to use the PS4 as a DVD/Bluray player than the DS4 (Everyone's used to the TV remote but the DS4 seems more confusing for them).

The workaround I can think of to your issue would be to change inputs away from the PS4 before turning off the TV, but I'm not sure if that'd be convenient enough for you to leave the feature on or not.

They could alternatively maybe add a settings menu to let you tweak what would happen under various circumstances, but I don't really think that would happen - it seems to be an all or nothing type of deal.

I use it. Don't have the issue you do though, my tv lets me turn on and off auto turn on, auto turn off, and auto input switch.

The setting probably is on your tv, not the PS4. Looking at my Sony W905 I have to go to Home>settings>external inputs>Bravia sync settings>Auto Devices off>off

Might very depending on yoyr manufacturer and model. Samsung tv's should have the settings for this under AnyNet+

HDMI CEC is great because manually selecting input sources on a receiver is a pain in the ass.

My LG B6 pisses me off though because it turns on any CEC device when selecting the receiver input.

"Fixed" it with remotely controllable power sockets for PS3 and PS4.

Examples like that is why I don't use HDMI-CEC on any of my devices. I've got a very complex setup so I know that any one of those things could screw up the overall functionality. I keep everything controlled and simplified with a Logitech Harmony setup which works way better at giving me the control I want. Combine that with an Amazon Echo and it's pure bliss and simple for controlling my home theater setup.

Just don't try to use a Steam Link with a Vizio E series TV. Completely freezes your TV, need ot unplug the HDMI and power cycle your TV to get it back on. Some CEC issue related to the Steam Link going into rest mode.

CEC is cool when it works, when it doesn't...

there's an option that lets you choose to turn off your ps4 when you turn off your tv (cant remember if its on your tv or ps4 but it is there). uncheck that, i found it that it crashed my ps4 too often so it wasnt worth it for some extra seconds of laziness

Time to read the manual OP: it's perfectly possible (unless your TV flat out doesn't have options) to have PS4 turn on TV but not have TV turn off PS4.

My Bravia puts my PS4 in rest mode and turns off my sounds bar when I turn it off, and when I turn on my PS4 it turns on both my TV and sound bar perfectly.

With my old Vizio TV it was a little quirky and sometimes didn't work.

I love the feature but it would be cool if it worked faster and/or allowed you to customize what you want to happen when you turn the TV on or off.

Yea OP, I get what you're saying. It is rather annnoying but the issue is that you likely have one too many setting boxes checked - either on the TV or PS4.

Hasn't happened to me. However HDMI control is implemented differently with each manufacturer. Each device in your chain might do something differently whether it be your TV, AV receiver, or console.

I don't use it because of the very reason you mentioned OP. And accessing TV's own menu is a pain too, as by default it controls PS4 os. Fuck that feature.

This is correct.

It also can vary based on if your devices have ARC HDMI ports. My TV and sound bar all use ARC and that seems to be the difference between my Bravia and the old Vizio.

I checked my TV's settings and you guys were right: there totally was a parameter in there labelled "deactivation of HDMI devices by the television" and it was set to "yes". I turned it off. Thanks.

Though there is another parameter that reads "allow the television to control HDMI-compatible devices", which is set to "yes". I don't know what that does. And below that, there is an option labeled "device list", which opens an empty list of HDMI devices when I click on it.

This means you can send signals to a connected device to control it. Like you could use the arrow buttons on your TV remote to control the input of the Fire TV or some other box connected.

Fuck that feature.

Bit of an overreaction!

HDMI-CEC is what it is. There are options and pros and cons, the intent was to allow devices to switch other devices' standby and input states and to allow one remote to control multiple devices.

I don't use it with my PS4, because I use a Harmony/Alexa setup, but the TV and BD player the kids use works with CEC just fine; hardly ever need the BD player remote.

Yep, been enjoying HDMI-CEC since I got a PS3 in 2007. When I got a Wii U and realised I needed to change TV inputs every time it felt like a step back in time.

the second option let's you control your PS4 or other HDMI-CEC devices with your tv remote.

Awesome. Did you test your Switch again to make sure it still works the way you want it to?

My TV used to turn on with the PS4 but stopped in the last few months.

More annoying is that when I put my PS4 in standby I have to wait for another input to kick in before turning the TV off. Otherwise the TV turns back on lol

Used to work great

HDMI-CEC is awesome.

it's a shame the Xbox One doesnt have it.

Didn't the OG XB1 have an IR sender that you were meant to use to control your TV, amp and set-top box? I could have imagined that, though!

All part of the 'TV, TV, TV' strategy, where the XB1 was to become the hub that everything else was routed through.

I thought the PS4's HDMI Link option was HDMI-CEC but it's that option in reverse. Switched my TV on this morning and the PS4 switched itself on. Normally, I'm happy to see the PS4 switch the TV on but not the other way round. Will have to uncheck that option.

In either the TV or PS4 you should be able to control if it can turn the devices on or off (it's nice when your TV is off you can pick up the ps4 controller turn on the console it will turn the TV on and switch the input to the ps4! That feature will allow the TV to control connected HDMI devices (ps4, blue ray drive, whatever people connect to their TVs these days).

Note: this is not new, my ps3 did all the same with my old Toshiba TV from 2008, I have a Samsung TV at the moment, so I assume the support for the protocol is widespread.

You should be able to control device power on or off control individually. Also note that it should turn on the PS4 (or other devices) only when you turn the TV goes to the device's input, either by turning it on or switching input. Most of the time it's great, but it can be annoying at times.

There are usually settings on the TV whether it should send the off signal to devices when it is turned off. You can change it.
