Does cyclops have to put his hand next to his eyes everytime he fires?

Wait, I never thought about this, but what stops villains from just using a shield made of the same material as his filter to just nullify his power?

Nothing. I think there was a robot that had an outer shell of ruby-quartz for precisely that reason.

Done

thing about it, Ruby Quartz isn't that tough

I had always assumed his visor had some kind of button on it that released a sort of safety allowing him to firing his laser eyes.

I remember watching the X2 extras and in one of them James Marsden kinda complained/commented that he had no real action scenes aside from tapping is visor which was funny so they added a fight scene in X2.

"Siri, fire the laser!"
"I'm sorry Cyclops, I don't know what you mean by briar my tazer"

I'd just like to thank you for cracking me the fuck up. I could so see that happening too. Then you see him get frustrated and start yelling it again and again while siri keeps messing what he is saying up.

So he doesn't need the visor anymore?

He didn't for the rest of that storyline. Basically, Emma was psychically helping him keep his powers turned off so that the enemy you see in the first panel would think he was depowered and capture him, thereby letting him get close enough to tear down their whole operation. Emma couldn't keep it going forever, though, so by the end of the storyline, he had to put the visor back on.

Does he ever get to control it without external assistance?

Never consistently and there's always some other factor at play. When he jumped from his parents' plane with Alex as child (when his powers first manifested), the part of his brain that controls his powers was permanently damaged.

How do the eyelids hold the beam?

His whole body is able to absorb and contain the blasts without taking damage, so closing his eyes works fine.

Force of habit. Like does Magneto really need to stick his arm out to control metal?

But if I could basically control things with my mind, I think I would definitely use my arms just out of habit or some sort of hand-eye coordination connection.

So can he shave like Superman?

Well, it's a little different. Superman has heat vision, and bounces it off a mirror to singe off any stubble from his face. Cyclops has optic blasts, which are concussive, not heat-based, so he'd have to narrow the focus of the beam to be fine enough to cut through the hair on his face rather than just yank the hair off its root via brute force. And even then, he'd need a ruby quartz mirror.

Beast probably could have found some way to contain his powers right?

Seems like a containment suit with air filtration could've worked fine. It's only organic material that's affected, after all.

Just another reason you don't trust the Ultimate X-Men. They make the 616 X-Men look like the Justice Society of America.
