Does Forza finally deserve the title as best racing series?

Best racing series

To be honest i have no clue whats going on with GT. Takes ages to release and then they come with a demo version or a smaller release? I dont know its a mess really.
GT is i think still living on its name. But thats it.

I haven't been blown away by a GT game since Gran Turismo 3. Subsequent releases have felt older than their release dates suggest; Forza has been owning them for so long, I had to actually sit and think about the last time I thoroughly enjoyed a GT game.

FH3 makes me miss Test Drive Unlimited, RIP GOAT open world racing series.

FH3 is absolutely fantastic, but yeah. the worlds in Test Drive Unlimited are special.

I was a little disappointed at the size of FH3's drive able area coming from TDU, TDU2 and The Crew. In every other way FH3 is superb.

Not just a simulation circuit racing game (Motorsports), a great arcade racer (Horizon), but the best graphic livery creator in a game.

Now, if they teamed up with Codemasters and rebooted Rallisport and combined it with DIRT DNA, then yes... Best Racing Game franchise

I laughed. Another one of these validation seeking threads? Next up: "Is Killer Instinct the best fighting series ever?", "Is Quantum Break the best third person shooter ever?"

Let me know when the Forza series produces a racer that's even half as much fun (Or as successful come to that) as Mario Kart 8 and we'll have this convo.

I have more fun playing Forza than Mario Kart. Alright your fun argument is out the window now. Next.

It's up there, certainly Motorsport is well ahead of its competitors. Still could use a bit more variety and thrills in its mostly sterile career modes though. Without an Xbone I am unsure how Forza 6 fared.

Horizon is great, but I have quibbles that keeps me thinking I overall prefer PGR4 for Kudos chasing racing thrills.

But yea I would prefer Forza to most any other racing franchise overall as of now.

Easily, Forza has been a great series since Forza 1 for me, everyone has been a lot of fun to play and I feel they have improved on each game.

Then we've got the Horizon spin off series and things have gone to level 10 for enjoyment.

Gran Turismo has gone the other way, ever since the debacle of 5 GT has been irrelevant, it's a dinosaur that rests on past glories to get by, they spend YEARS making the next game and come with nothing new, the cars sound awful to boot, at this point in time I think Sony should've rolled up Evolution into PD to do something different and get GT back to the glory days of GT1/2.

It's a shame how far the series has fallen as I loved the originals on my PS1. Hours upon hours of fun.

I can't speak for the main series, as I haven't played any of them extensively... but Horizon? Absolutely.

I can speak the main series as well, and I think at this point, Horizon is just head and shoulders more enjoyable than Motorsport. I love Sim racing more than Arcade racing typically as well, but there is something super special about this series ( and in particular, this game! )

I would vote that Forza Horizon 3 might be my favorite racing game of all time. But I can't in good conscience vote Forza as a whole as the best racing series. I usually prefer Gran Turismo to Forza Motorsport.

I also think the DiRT franchise has delivered the most consistently for me. ( Loved everyone except DiRT Showdown and I still played that one for ~40 hours before getting bored with it )

"Finally"?
I believe it deserves and holds the title since at least 2010. FM3 and specially FM4 outmatched GT5 in most relevant aspects. FM5 outmatched GT6; FM6 destroyed it.
At this point, there have been more Forzas than GTs. By the time GTS arrives, FM7 should be very near.

The Crew´s open world map and Driveclub´s graphics are still unmatched, IMHO. On everything else, the Forzas rule. The weakest game produced by Turn 10 / Playground is arguably FM5, which is still a very solid and fun launch title.

Why can't somebody just like a game without you assuming it is some console war nonsense? You're looking petty right now.

Forza Horizon is a very fun series of games and it is easy to understand why people would find it more fun than Mario Kart.

Yes, I'd say it's fully earned it's place by now. GT hasn't been able to really step up to the plate to even compete and Horizon 2 was probably the most fun I've ever had in a racing game. Looking forward to booting 3 tommorow, all of my complaints about the 2nd are addressed in Horizon 3 so I'm pretty stoked.

The only real thing that could take Forza to the next level would be a really in depth damage and destruction system. In many ways the Horizon series is the spiritual successor to what Burnout Paradise was trying to do for open world racing back in 08 so I can't help but fantasize about what Forza would be like with some takedowns.

Love FH2 and FM6 on xbone.
FH3 is over the top fantastic.

I was a GT lover up until 4 and also love the Motorstorm series and WipEout HD/Fury.

For the whole package though, I think the Forza series is the best I've played.

Open world yes.

Sim/Arcade, nothing beats Driveclub and Rushy this gen. Sorry.

You can't separate open world into a genre by itself and then turn around and mash up simulation and arcade into one. *EDIT Oh you were saying Driveclub is SIM and Rushy(?) is arcade? If you think Driveclub is a sim...I don't know what to tell you. I have no idea what Rushy is by the way, google isn't bringing up anything.

I'll give it to you Driveclub fans, very persistent about your love for the game, I don't know what you see in it exactly but I feel like if it was really good as you all say it is, they could have actually retained a decent playerbase. They gave it out for free and it still couldn't survive out there, I mean if there was any merit to it besides the pretty lights it would have caught on right? How could a game like that fail?

I love the franchise and have done since FM1. I prefer the Motorsport series but FH is great for hooning around. Lately though i feel the career element is artificially padded out for the sake of being able to say the latest iteration is bigger. That's my only complaint though. I've yet to play any other car-based game that handles controller optimisation as well as FM/FH.

It seems weird this threads inception is based off a game made by PlayGround Games and not Turn 10 and you even say Forza 5 should be forgotten. I'd also say Forza 3 should probably be forgotten too. Forza 2 was just right.

Overall the Horizon spin-offs may be a shining light mind.

Forza has constantly improved in almost every aspect each release and I think they actually listen to the community. Of course there are games that may do certain aspects better but as a whole it's remarkable how good forza has become. There is no other racing series that seems like a complete package every time a new game comes out and the presentation is second to none. I am really looking forward to forza 7 on Scorpio.
I get Turn 10 release one Forza after another and they prefer to refine rather than add new gameplay features. So I'm struggling to see what Turn 10 have done.

Is that it though? They implement something in one release and refine to the 'nth degree in the next i.e. polishing before innovation, or something?

Given the issues that competitors have had with development, turn 10 and playground games deserve much credit for releasing amazing games like clockwork.

Open world yes.

Sim/Arcade, nothing beats Driveclub and Rushy this gen. Sorry.

I loved Driveclub. Gorgeous, unique tracks I haven't driven a million times in other games, and it handled great.

Even each dlc pack came with its own events abd challenges so you got to tear up the game your new cars. Forza gives us cool cars like Ayrton Senna's McLaren in F6, but absolutely nothing to use it in besides online really and no career integration unless it happens to already fit a category.

GT was the king, but hasn't done anything truly great in over a decade. FH2 (& i hope 3) are the best racing games I've ever played.

For the most part, I do not like the racing genre but not only do i love FH2 and will love FH3 tonight, FH2 itself is my game of the gen thus far. That's how good that game is to me.

Yup. FH2 was full of so many amazing moments. Tearing ass through a field in the mediterranean countryside blasting classical music. Racing a train up a fucking mountain. My body is so ready for tomorrow.

If you mean against Gran Turismo only, sure, and since a while.
If you mean overall, no. Maybe for its subgenre though.

since gt has become a shit series since 5 and their complete absence in this gen, the only really competitor was dc. and even that was killed by sony in a nice fashion. so yeah, with NO REAL competition, horizon and the normal forza do take the crown.
iam waiting for f-zero and rallisport challenge 3 ,but I think can wait forever :(

fh3 seems amazing, but i only played the demo.. but i would go for racing game of the year.

Forza MS and Horizon are far and away the best games in their respective genres this gen but the competition has been pretty terrible

For sims you got PC focused kinda low budget games like Project Cars and Assetto Corsa which have a more hardcore target audience so they are not very "fun" and about as inviting as a trip to the dentist. And Polyphony is off in its own world spending half a decade making a game that does not seem to be fixing anything that was wrong with their previous games.

Arcade you got Need for Speed and Driveclub. EA doesn't seem to know what to do with NFS anymore and Sony knew exactly what it wanted to do with Evolution. Shut that sucker down.

But yeah. Forza has been the shining light in a pretty bad generation or racers. Keep it up MS. And its great Forza is finally on PC because I think that market could totally use a more accessible racer that isnt full arcade crazy

It's no Wipeout.

But with that said I haven't been engrossed in a racing game like I am with FH3 right now. It's my first proper dip into the series so I can't really comment on much outside 3. And it might be getting bonus points for being set in my country.

With all of that said though this game is really fucking good. I'm going to go back into FH1 when I'm done and maybe give FM6 a try. But if the other games are on the level of FH3 then yeah I can see a good argument for it being the best.

Probably. It has been constantly solid even if it hasn't been doing it for me for a while and every iteration has been a fantastically well crafted game.

Motorsport suffered from the same fate that GT did for me that it is ultimately the same tracks and a lack of character missing from the environments. Horizon has never interested me as I'm not into open world driving games (at the moment anyway), however I think it would be the perfect game for VR and something I would love to play if they went that route in the future.

Richard Burns Rally, GT2, Midnight Club 2, F-Zero GX, Wipeout HD, FM3 and Driveclub have been some of my favourite racers over the decades never really been one that buys into franchises though.

As cool as TDU2 was and the huge map being awesome, that game had some horrid flaws with mid game car physics being all wonky, the end game non-existing, and annoying presentation, the game just doesn't stand up to FH3
Not just a simulation circuit racing game (Motorsports), a great arcade racer (Horizon), but the best graphic livery creator in a game.

The first DiRT game really scratched that rallisport challenge itch for me

Nah, Mario Kart has that title forever and ever. A great local multiplayer game that people of all skill levels can jump in and play without any previous knowledge of how racing games operate.

Anyway, only on Gaf you can read that releasing too many good games at a good pace and with no delays is a bad thing

Damn you T10/Playground!

Forza surpassed Gran Turismo somewhere around Forza 3 or 4.

In fact, GT has actually been moving backwards while Forza moves forwards. I consider GT 5, 6, and PSP to be disapointing entries with really uneven production values. GT still might sell well but it's no longer a prestige franchise in my eyes.

Looking at the review scores, yeah it deserves the place. The delevoper gets also some credit for putting so much Forza games while other developers (Poly....sigh) delive a game once in 4/5 years.

I don't think you can compare Horizon with something like Mario Kart, those are in different sides of the arcade racer subgenre. Horizon limits itself to mantain a feeling of authenticity while Mario Kart can bend whatever rule to serve gameplay.
I think racers should be categorized in: sim, arcade and kart. In which case, the forza series tops two of them.

FH3 is absolutely fantastic, but yeah. the worlds in Test Drive Unlimited are special.

I was a little disappointed at the size of FH3's drive able area coming from TDU, TDU2 and The Crew. In every other way FH3 is superb.

This. TDU will always be my favourite. Horizon 2 bored me so much it put me off the series.
