Does Killzone deserve the hype it's getting?

I thought Killzone 1 was garbage. I had high hopes for it and it was a pretty huge disappointment. The gameplay was generic, as was the story, and the graphical issues were ENTIRELY Guerrilla's problem. Rule #1 of a developer is to work WITH your hardware, not ABOVE it. Doing the latter is foolish and will never get you anywhere.

Fixed

And I agree, what they did was foolish. But what they're doing now doesn't look foolish at all, stylistically or gameplay-wise. Their foolishness was adorable!

Killzone wasn't awful by any means. Lots of people like it and the reviews were decent, not anywhere near ''awful''. What's more, they generally agreed that the game had some good ideas, unfulfilled potential, and was crippled by crap hardware, which isn't the case now. KZ2 is being hyped because it looks to be a massive improvement.
Killzone was a terrible game, awful story, weird controls, and the second most glitched game Ive ever played, the reviews were mostly 6 and 7s and even then I thought it was overrated.

The gameplay wasn't generic, it was a mediocre. The story an all accounts was awesome, and that continued in Liberation. And the graphical issues aren't as bad as you say either.

Their "foolishness" also severely tainted their reputation. It's perfectly plausible to be skeptical of Killzone 2 because of the company's prior work, which is why I don't understand how people can just go around lauding it as the "best FPS ever" already.

It isn't reasonable to compare Liberation to Killzone 2 or 1- it's a completely different type of game and isn't representative of the FPS genre (even though I agree it was a good title). The graphic issues ARE bad- go back and play the game. Especially in MP, the engine dropped to 10 FPS at some points.

Killzone Liberation is not an FPS, which is why I excluded it while talking about their FPS games. Since Killzone 2 is an FPS.

Dr. Zoidberg is right. You, Pristine_Condition and other posters treat this one game like it is the PS3 or Sony. You assume I have an anti-Sony agenda because I'm not entirely convinced by the game. And the opposite for supporters of it, grouped together as sony fanboys when some people clearly just liked the first game.

No one cares.

Except nobody's doing that. People are just very excited. It's perfectly OK to be skeptical, but you're wrong when you say this game isn't worthy of being hyped simply because of one mediocre game. It's being hyped on its own merits. It's absolutely deserving, based on its glowing early impressions.

Besides, Liberation was great. And it looks like Guerrilla have learned some very valuable lessons on the FPS front.

I never said it wasn't worthy of being hyped. I said it's graphics certainly ARE, but it isn't safe to make any other conclusions at this point.

it's a pretty next-gen shooter, and as such will get hype whether it deserves it or not

that said, i'm pretty tired of talking about games, their hype, how much they're getting and how much they deserve

b.) One of the primary reasons Killzone 1 was held back so was specifically due to technical reasons - atrocious framerate, frequent loading and the uneven pacing due to it. The actual gameplay mechanics were solid and the world was quite compelling.

Amirox, I've seen you say this a few times...and I have to ask, have you -ever- played Killzone? It only loads at the beginning of each level, and it's not long enough to annoy.

This thread makes wonders to my Ignore list

Its so funny how people are judging Killzone 2 cause of Killzone 1... Guerrilla is a totally different company, TONS of new people and TONS of money are involved this time around. Gain some common sense will ya?

What they already showed just proves how different its gonna be, on a technical level is beyond anything seen on consoles so far.

yes, the problem is the levels are generally very short so you see loading often i assume because if they tried to put anything else in the level, the game would run at 1fps.

you can only judge a dev by there past and killzone 1 sucked
How could you forget that wonderful game Shellshock: Nam '67?

I was stating Liberation for the story line, just how it continued the story. And yes I know it isn't a FPS. I never had the problem with it (Killzone) dropping to 10fps, it would chug at times but not badly.
And I have played the original 2 times.

I'm sure Halo's the same way, but the whole "Helghast My Avatar" movement makes it seem almost militant, especially considering how far off the KZ2 release is.

I love it when people talk out of there ass and make stuff up, even when, if you want to see how the whole "KILLZONE MY AVATAR" thing started, YOU CAN LOOK IT UP RIGHT HERE ON THIS SITE.

There was nothing, NOTHING, "militant" about it...it was just a bunch of GAFers goofing off because there was nothing to do while waiting for the pre-E3 event news to show up.

Hell, I was one of the first 20 or so people to "Killzone" my avatar, and I even "Killzoned" someone else's too. Yet in the very same thread, I clearly stated that I didn't even think KZ2 would be the best game at the Sony show, much less the whole of E3. I always picked R&C to be the best-looking game of Sony's show.

Anyone who sees something "militant" about some GAFers Photoshopping shit really needs to have their head examined. Sheesh. You must really have a tough time living through Caturdays, buddy...

WTF was the point of this thread?

To get a rise out of people or to have the usual suspects come in and downplay the game.

Why be ''safe''? People are excited because all indications are that the graphics, physics and overall experience look great. That's what hype is all about. Whether it delivers or not, who knows? We'll find out later. Maybe Mario Galaxy will be as underwhelming as Mario Sunshine, maybe Crysis will be no more exciting than Far Cry. Who knows? Not looking likely, and that's what's exciting.

Didnt get it, then reread some prior posts and got it.

Get it?

The game is getting hype on the graphics. Kind of like the first got hype because someone called it "The Halo Killer". Hype is one thing, delivering is another.

-It's a game done by the same developer.

-It's an indication of the quality of the developer's work, regardless of platform or genre.

-It's the most recent example of the developer's work.

-It's a war shooter.

-It's in the same universe, and has some carry-over in the story.

-Many of the same people worked on gameplay mechanics for both games. For example, the same guy who developed the cover system in Liberation designed the innovative first-person cover system for KZ2, using Liberation as a starting-point.

Yeah, go ahead and listen to Zoidberg, the guy who is trying to say the whole "killzone my avatar" goof on NeoGAF is some sort of "militant" statement, instead of what it really is/was, some guys harmlessly goofing around with Photoshop. You're a genius.

Post 117 on pg 3.

Did you skip the part where I said:

"I'm sure there are many who think the game will be grand regardless of "allegiances""

I know there are people who are legitimately hyped for the game, but you'd have to be foolish to believe that the fact that this is one of PS3's "tent-pole" games does not impact the hype level around here. I'm sure Halo's the same way, but the whole "Helghast My Avatar" movement makes it seem almost militant, especially considering how far off the KZ2 release is. Again, I'm not saying the game won't be great, just that you can't discount this game's importance to those with console biases.

I wasn't referring to the OP, per se, as I wasn't sure if that's what captive was referring to. Other people in this thread have had perfectly reasonable arguments, however, and the OP's post was a pretty valid question.
