Does Killzone deserve the hype it's getting?

Yes because I choose what games I want to anticipate. I don't care what anyone else thinks, but this is pretty much at the top of my most wanted list. :D

Big budget, epic war setting, great expectations, dedicated developer quietly working hard to prove itself despite massive skepticism, what drama.

I have to agree with that last one. If GG do come through this and meet everyone's expectations, then hats off to them. They've got alot of work to do.

1) is this just nicely put together footage of FEAR style body reactions
2) how exactly is this going to play
3) have they got some good AI coders

First of it was a pre-beta version.

1.Did you watch any of the E3 presentation video's, then you know it wasn't "footage" there was a guy playing it.
2.Again if you have seen the video's, you know the answer.
3.Again, watch the video's!

So Sage00, are you going to actually acknowledge the arguments that have been made in response here, or was this just a glorified "because I say so" thread?
I have replied to many people in this thread and agreed with their points, for example Amirox's best console graphics argument.

The only games I allow myself to get really hyped for are ones coming from a developer with a track record of creating games I love.

Having said that KZ2 sure is purty!

Revenge posting?

I'm impressed by Killzone 2 showing. I'll definitely play this game. But as of now, it is too early to predict if game would have awesome gameplay too.

Ok, the graphics are good, I think we've established that.

But if any other game was announced by a developer who's last efforts (excluding Killzone Liberation, which is pretty good) were agreed universally to have been terrible, would people start hyping it? I just don't see the basis of this.

I'm not saying it's not going to be good (as they've proven they can, on an off chance, make a good game), I'm just saying it's the sort of game people should be cautious about, given the developers track record. Yet, people seem to be head over heels over it, despite no one having played it, no one having given impressions, etc.

Explain yourself, gaf.
The last game wasn't all that great, but its fiction and the marketing hype really put it on every ones radar. I would like to see a very highly polish and fun game for KZ2, I need another "exclusive" game designed for the PS3 to help me feel really good about buying the console.

Several of your posts in this thread have mentioned the lack of hands-on accounts, so that obviously seems like an important factor here. Yet you haven't bothered commenting on the hands-on accounts there actually are. And additionally, do you seriously consider it impossible to make judgment calls on certain improvements without actually getting a chance to play it for yourself?

Sure, why not? The best example I can think of, is Oblivion. It turned out to be the best next-gen RPG so far on PC and consoles. Bethesda's earlier efforts were ambitious but turned out kinda rough. Morrowind on the Xbox/PC was pretty good but still not universally loved by all. Oblivion not only had awesome graphics but also had gameplay that appealed to almost all gamers, including those that usually dislike rpgs.

The Killzone avatars are getting annoying though. It really hasn't done enough yet to serve as some sort of banner.

One thing we can all agree to get excited about. Killzone2 is the best looking thing we've yet seen this gen...... and it's from a European developer!!!!! Based in Amsterdam no less.

*does happy dance*

*dozens entertained*

I think PS3 is a major disaster, don't own one, thought Killzone 1 was mediocre but even I'm hyped for Killzone 2.

Did you skip the part where I said:

"I'm sure there are many who think the game will be grand regardless of "allegiances""

I know there are people who are legitimately hyped for the game, but you'd have to be foolish to believe that the fact that this is one of PS3's "tent-pole" games does not impact the hype level around here. I'm sure Halo's the same way, but the whole "Helghast My Avatar" movement makes it seem almost militant, especially considering how far off the KZ2 release is. Again, I'm not saying the game won't be great, just that you can't discount this game's importance to those with console biases.

My 2 cents:

Getting hyped for something you barely know about is actually an act of faith. You get a 1 minute video or a couple of screenshots and at that very moment, you build up you own expectations and ilusions.

You don't have to justify why you build up expectations about a certain game, after seeing its teaser trailer or seen some gameplay footage.

I have NEVER ever played anything about Zack and Wiki or No more Heroes, but I HOPE they turn out good and that they deliver on the promise that internet/GAF has made me believe in.

that's all.

Killzone fans or duke nukem forever fans have the right to get hyped about anything they want, you don't have to justify because it is hype made of hope and believe.

i think it's pretty clear why this happened, and I don't think it has much to do with allegiances since I saw many non-PS3 people "Helghast their avatars."

There was a CG video, then everyone learned it was fake. This became a huge talking point against many things - including Sony, but also the unrealistic expectations surrounding next-gen.

This CG video was used by MANY naysayers to cast stones at Sony, it's true, and naturally I'm sure many Sony fans were waiting for vindication.

So here's the big talking point, anyone who closely follows the videogame scene is interested to see how they deal with it. So we learn they're going to unveil it, it becomes a sorta "megaton" event every side and every camp can participate in... waiting for disaster, waiting for success... either way it would make for an awesome thread. And it did! It was more about the GAF reaction than the game itself, imo

And I rest my case...

I think many people are not even consciously aware that what the above poster stated is occurring. Again, not directed solely against the PS3 camp, ALL sides have done it. And to be honest I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just pointing it out is all.

Why are all you Killzone people so bloody defensive? Lighten up for Christ's sake.

Someone made a stupid comment about K2 and H3 on page 1, so I reply with a GIF, to which someone replies 'Wow, the textures on the ground look muddy' (Yes, it's a 256 colour GIF). And then someone else jumps on me saying I'm trying to claim something about animation?

Just... what the hell?

I don't think there has been a significant amount of people who have tried the game, for a significant amount of time. I've read N'Gai's impressions, and that made me optimistic for the game, but not enough to hype it to the heavens as a "killer app" which seems to be happening. Killzone 1 originally had good impressions also.

And to go back to that Halo 3 comment, and what I said earlier about Heavenly Sword, the press(all of them) have had the chance to play those games multiple times, and so have the general public. That's why I believe the hype for those game is more solidified.

Making sure I don't miss any of your points since you seem a little picky about that. :P
No, I don't. But I don't think you can judge alot from a short video that only a small amount of people have been able to play. Yes, you can obviously notice some improvements right away, but you can't get a general feel of a game from that short amount of time imo. I think we can judge from long gameplay impressions and videos though, yes.

If the opposite had happened in a HALO3 thread the..... well...... I'm not even going to finish that sentence.

But I appreciate the irony all the same.

Yes, yes it does deserve the hype. Excellent graphics, excellent animation and from the presentation it is very theatrical and atmospheric. Yeah the first title had more bad points than good ones, but liberation displayed great strides forward in gameplay from gg and if they can transfer the lessons learned from liberation in terms of good gameplay and bundle it with the all the good things we have already seen, then yeah hype deserved.

Because the first Killzone was pretty awful (yes, I own it) and the first two Halo's are critically acclaimed blockbusters?

But still, that doesn't mean this thread should exist. Until a demo of sorts is released, I don't think anyone can make a call on this.

The graphics are deserving of the hype, but thats all that can be noted at this point.

I thought the whole reason everyone changed their avatars was because it already was an overhyped piece of shit. No, I haven't played it yet, but let's be honest here. It's friggin Killzone.

I still don't get the hype to be honest. Even the graphics are not blowing me away like some. I guess Gears of War and even Ghost Recon spoiled me as I now expect games to look like that.
agreed on the graphics part, it's pretty much on par with GoW.

Killzone wasn't awful by any means. Lots of people like it and the reviews were decent, not anywhere near ''awful''. What's more, they generally agreed that the game had some good ideas, unfulfilled potential, and was crippled by crap hardware, which isn't the case now. KZ2 is being hyped because it looks to be a massive improvement.

n-god's approval + awesome graphics pretty much confirm the hype. KZ2 passed all the tests it could pass so far with flying colors. And only month ago, people expected disaster :-).

Killzone 1 was an upset. I had high hopes for it and it was a pretty huge disappointment. The gameplay was generic, as was the story, and the graphical issues were ENTIRELY Guerrilla's problem. Rule #1 of a developer is to work WITH your hardware, not ABOVE it. Doing the latter is foolish and impractical and will never get you anywhere.

No one who has played Killzone 2 (if there are any outside GG) are allowed to talk about it. ALL we have to go on now, from a gameplay perspective, is their previous efforts.

N'Gai Croal from Newsweek played it, and his impressions were definitely hype-worthy for hardcore FPS fans, especially concerning little subtle details like the gun views and the cover system.

He wrote two articles about it, so I don't know where you got the impression that no one was allowed to talk about it.

As far as your second point goes, that "ALL we have to go on now, from a gameplay perspective, is their previous efforts," well, I'd say you are looking at the record of those previous efforts in either a dishonest light, or, at best, a completely ass-backward fashion, to be honest.

You say:

...and, when people point out to you that Killzone wasn't actually completely terrible in toto, it was actually a 7.5 game, you follow-up with...

Sage00 said:
And some clarification on the first post. I wasn't just talking about Killzone 1 when I said that, I was talking about their other game, "Shellshock: Nam '67" too, which was terrible.

First, you can't exclude Liberation just because it doesn't conveniently suit your premise that the developer's track record sucks. Sorry. Liberation is a GG game, and it has just as much right to be included in an analysis of their efforts as Shellshock does. Actually, it probably is a more accurate reflection of the GG development house of today, because it is the first game that was completed after GG as a company had exploded in the size of their workforce under Sony's watchful eye.

So, the fact that you want to exclude the most recent, most telling title GG games has produced, and slide in Shellshock as some sort of bellwether of GG's abilities pretty much indicates that you are working under an agenda here.

I don't understand why stuff like this goes unpunished.

Then again this whole topic is pretty much a flamebait clusterfuck.

I'm just kidding god you guys all take it to the heart. :lol :lol :lol

I'm not trolling seriously I'm not. Anyways after the last few days I was thinking about games that had the first game in the series not that great in gameplay nor well anything else then the sequels blow them away or become significantly better, I believe Killzone has a chance actually in becoming better than it's previeous title. I mean I'm hoping that Halo 3's single player campaign doesn't come out as boring/bland as Halo 2's campaign and back to the simplistic fun of Halo 1's single player.

Seriously all our favorite games first title wasn't really that loved, for example look at Metroid 1, I didn't like it at all and then bam super metroid (i'm skipping Metroid 2 cause I didn't get to play it). Course I don't know if killzone 2 will have that much of a leap but it might.
