Does PS3 only upscale DVDs via HDMI?

How about a HDTV with DVI that has HDCP? :/ I wish that would work too
Yes that works. Despite HDMI always getting thrown around, all you need is HDCP. Some but not all DVI ports support HDCP and they will upscale.

:O

I think my main HDTV has DVI with HDCP. If so then I'll get the proper cables later on. Thanks Mmmkay!

Ok....if I already have a DVI <> DVI cable could I get a Female DVI to Male HDMI converter? Or does it need to be the other way around? (HDMI cable with the Female HDMI to Male DVI converter being connected to the HDTV?)

Cause this could save me a couple of bucks since I want to get this today from some Brick and Motar stores. All I would need to buy is a $30 adapter

There's no reason I can think of to stop you using a device like this:
dvi-to-hdmi.jpg

HDMI<->DVI Cables just reroute the data from one set of pins to another.

... $30?!"?!"?!"ÂŁ WHAT

That will work, but HDMI --> DVI cables are cheap and I think you should get a dedicated cable for your PS3. More comfortable in the long run.

Also I guess your tv is a Westinghouse ?

Thats exactly what I'm looking at now (the connector orientation)

Is $30 too much? I'm getting from Best Buy so I'm pretty much ready to take it up the butt in regards to priceing.

If I got the cable Online, I guess it would be cheeper but I wanna try and get this setup today.

The HDTV is an older RCA, fortunately it has DVI /HDCP

Well it's your butt at the end of the day, but you'd be able to find something like that online for a fifth of the price.

I got one on ebay for like 4 dollars. 30 dollars is wayyyyyyy too much. But if you absolutely want to do it today.

Heh, I just looked Online and I can get a dedicated cable that has Male DVI and HDMI on each end for $10 off Amazon. I guess I'll get it Online and wait a few days lol, its the smarter choice definitely.

Why can't you upscale DVD over component? It and HDMI and basically the same PQ wise.

??

HDCP (Copyright Protection). Component doesn't have any safeguards against pirating HD Video so a connection with HDCP is needed.

monoprice.com it should be stickied.

Totally forgot about Monoprice, I'll check that out right now.

Isn't HDCP for only...well HD content? Hence why most monitors these days have them so people don't get burned?

I understand though. Just seems kind of cheap, stupid patent and copyright stuff :(

For me it doesn't matter since I'm a HDMI person. And 1080i isn't to bad anyway.

Yeah Monoprice should be bookmarked.

I ordered from them 3 HDMI cables and 1 optical with express to Canada for $30. Took 1.5 weeks! >:(

Other then that, it's all good....soo good.*cue spiderman gif*

Remember that if you use DVI you still need audio from your PS3 - so you need to keep optical or RCA stereo plugged in.

And don't be surprised if it simply doesn't work even though everything is correct. That's HDMI and HDCP for you.

Also, Monoprice has AMAZING deals on wall mounts brackers for LCDs and plasmas.

Edit: Holy shit: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10830&cs_id=1083001&p_id=3566&seq=1&format=2 ($5 component video for Wii.)

Edit 2: Good goddamn. http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...cs_id=1083001&p_id=3567&seq=1&format=2&style= Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 component on one cable. Good news for people with huge ass CRTs and no switcher... $12 !

Yeah, I'm kinda worried that my HDTV will be flakey when it comes to HDCP and the PS3. But the cable itself is not that expensive, so its worth a shot.

I have an optical cable on hand, so I'll have to feed that to my Sound System or HDTV.
