Does soy sauce have a strong smell?

This may well end up the stupidest thread I ever make, but I kind of feel the need to get some outside feedback on this.

I like to use soy sauce, but my family absolutely does not. Furthermore, my family claims it has a very strong smell, and my younger sister will flee to the other side of the dinner table when I open the bottle. To me though, I can only just barely smell anything from it when I get up close, and I don't exactly have a terrible sense of smell.

So, how would you guys describe soy sauce in terms of smell? Strong, weak, something in-between?

Yes, especially depending on brand.

If you can barely smell it, I would argue you have a terrible sense of smell.

On a scale of 1 to wasabi, it's a 3, at best.

I like it (the low sodium one at least)

But it comes rather strong to anyone who has tried in one of my recipees

Although it's not strong, it's certainly strong enough for people at the same dinner table to smell it, especially if there's little to no other smell to block it out.

It has a stronger smell to me. If I'm sitting next to someone at the table or someone cooks with it, I can smell it rather well. Sounds more like you have a busted sense of smell.

NB: I like soy sauce and the way it smells but it does smell kind of fermenty.

I think it has a strong smell... but then again I use it as an ingredient when I fry chicken in a pan for asia food, and in a hot pan it probably intensifies the smell.

i dont think it has a strong smell unless youre putting your nose next to it and sniffing it

i think your family dislikes the entity of soy sauce altogether and not just the smell

Never notice a smell for the packets that come with fast food but the store bought ones like Kum Lee do have a faint odor but not strong to the point it is irritant. Also I think the fast food packet ones taste much better,

I'd say it depends, but that is a local issue

Because in here, Chinese and Japanese food restaurants always put a small bottle of soy sauce in your take out orders which is almost always mixed with water, in order to maximize profit I guess.

As opposed to buying a soy sauce bottle from the supermarket or store, which is obviously stronger in smell and flavor.

It's a sharper and more distinctive smell, but I wouldn't say it's strong. As in, it has such a quantity of odor that it overpowers other odors.

Your sister thinks it's worse than it actually is. It's all in her head. She's probably a picky eater when it comes to other things, too.

Pretty mild to me. Sesame oil on the other hand. .. whew... my house reeks of it for days and my wife is never happy with me when I use it

Kikkoman is the brand they use in most all-you-can eat Japanese restaurants. Its alright.

I know it hasn't yet, but gaf, if this becomes a soy sauce snobbery thread I swear to god I will go to the pet store, buy a kitten and shit on its neck. Just try me.

I can smell it. I was pretty allergic to it as a kid. has a kind of salty sour smell.

I only buy soy sauce from international markets. It has to be authentic, meaning traditionally aged. None of that heat aging chemistry bullshit. Fucking horrid crap. Have some self respect.

I drink that stuff by the cup and I've never smelled it one bit.

It doesn't smell strong and even if you smell it is it a smell that you wouldn't mind trying depending on what food you are having it with such as Sushi or certain stir-fry. Does it smell strong enough to sniff it from 2 meters away? No, you may smell a tint of it if the wind blows your direction but no, not really. Does it smell strong enough for people to complain? Absolutely NOT and those that do complains are complete idiots for acting like a baby!! After all, it is not like Curry.

So smell strength? I'd say around low-mid and low being a equivalent of a person having to put their nose close to the sauce to smell it. If your Soy Sauce smells horrid, then it is likely that it is either "old" or a "low quality" product.
