Does Square Enix have plan for Dragon Quest retail releases in West anymore?

The only way for the series to become relevant in the West again is to release on PS4 (and possibly XBO as well). Given all the signs we have seen that the next game will be for PS4, I think they have realized this too.

I've lost hope in the 3DS remakes of VII and Monsters 1-2. Maybe we'll see Pirate Slime on the eShop going by Horii's comments. X is pretty much out of the question.

I do think they might try to give things another shot with Heroes and Theathrythm. Both are simpler localizations than the jrpgs and could represent a clean break.

If they "can't justify the cost" to localize DQ 7 Remake, I'd hate to know what they'll think about DQ 11.
Surely Sony will help unlike Nintendo.
The fact we got DQ IV, V, VI and IX was because of Nintendo. Be thankful they helped with those.

I had hoped that after the success of Bravely Default in the west, that a DQ7 localization would have been a for sure thing.... Maybe I was wrong

Hasn't Nintendo published every Dragon Quest game since VIII on PS2? I think it's probably a better question to ask if Nintendo has more plans for it haha

Nintendo only published IX and VI. IV and V were published by SE in the States.

Ah yes. I sticked with the mainline games. The side games were never interesting to me.

Well I think it's important to note because it's the definite proof that SE actually dropped the series and Nintendo picked it up as opposed to something like Monster Hunter where Nintendo acts more as a distributor.

EDIT:
All you guys in this thread assuming that DQXI will be on PS4 and not cell phones are great

Horii directly shot down DQXI being a mobile game. He said maybe in the future a DQ game could be a mobile game.

they'll bring Theatrhythm Dragon Quest over. I just know it

please bring it over ;_;

I wish... I'm sure their reasoning would be (even though it would be a cheap localization, music royalties aside) something like "people in the west aren't big fans of DQ. Why would they want a game based on it's music??" Sounds like their mindset, anyways.

As for VII, I say there is a SLIM chance it might show up this year, as an after thought. If no news in 2015, might as well kiss all hope goodbye for it :(

Personally, I'm ready for DQXI on the Vita. As a matter of fact, when I can be bothered I'm going to start collecting every post I can (or beg someone else to, you know whatever works) and then I'm going to relentlessly mock them in the DQXI announcement thread. Bookmarking your post now.

Oh snap.

PS4/Vita or just Vita? I'm trying...

I'd be surprised if DQ7 3DS doesn't come over here at some point, likely published by NOA. It just always takes forever with those games.
It admittedly seems to be in a bit of a grey zone in that it's a remake, but it's a MUCH higher end remake than IV-VI were. That might be easier to push than something that looks like a lower end PS1 game still.

I'm genuinely wondering if Square-Enix downsized their localization department.

Since 2010, so many games have either stayed japan-exclusive, or been handled by Nintendo:

Bravely Default, Dragon Quest X, Dragon Quest VII, Chaos Rings III, Rise of Mana, Bravely Second, Final Fantasy Explorers, Lord of Apocalypse, SaGa 3, Diffusion Million Arthur, Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & 2 (3DS), Final Fantasy Agito.

Some of them could still be announced, but they should have by now. What is wrong with them, do they have something against handhelds?

It's not assuming. We know for a fact that DQXI isn't mobile.

OT: I'm sure Dragon Quest Heroes will be localized. Even Gundam Musou got released over here. Beyond that I just don't know. IF DQXI is a PS4 title then it would be very silly for Square not to localize it considering the PS4's popularity in the West and current lack of RPGs on the platform.

i'm so upset about dq7

i don't understand how there's a market for even more niche atlus games on 3ds and not a market for it to be profitable. then if so i don't understand why they'd want to strangle a brand in the west that they're going to be making games in for a long time because of japan. you never know if it's going to resonate suddenly like fire emblem did or persona did. it'd be nice if nintendo stepped and localized it to fill a slow period in the future while their first party works on other stuff, but ultimately it's not nintendo's responsibility to run square's business for them.

That reminds me, why haven't SE released the PS1 version of DQVII on PSN? All the FF games have been released, so why not DQ?

By the time DQXI comes out there won't a lack of RPGs on the PS4.

Horii's official word was that they would rather remake games than rerelease them. The DQ Collection on Wii and the mobile ports shows that they might have reconsidered that though.

I feel like they use that (hypothetical) localization money towards just promoting main game FF and Eidos titles in the west. They explode with their big sellers, like FF and Tomb Raider, but not much gets focused elsewhere...

Still, it would take little effort to throw the game up on PSN, and they can even use the profits toward localizing the remake.

Man Dragon Quest 7 not being localized cuts deep. I've wanted that game since before it came out in Japan. I highly doubt it'll come out though since SE have been dicks about localizing their games, and I don't think Nintendo will do it either since they've taken so long and they have their own issues with localizing.

Yeah but there's an argument to be made that people could buy the PSN version instead of the remake and they'd prefer people buy the remake. Not saying I agree but I can definitely see some of the logic behind it especially when you consider they sold over a million copies of the remake in Japan.

The localisation of DQVII PS1 is also not up to their modern standards.

Fuck, I really hope they don't want to release the Musou game here as a "test," game to see how Dragon Quest fares in the US, I don't want to buy that Musou shit.

Not getting DQ VII on 3DS feels like a personal 'fuck you' from a company I used to love.

Pretty much my sentiments exactly. I took solace in the fact that DQX was an MMO and not really what I wanted. But no localized version of DQ VII on 3DS? That's some grade-A bullshit.

Dragon Warrior(Quest) 7 is such a massive game, I mean its truly HUGE. I remember it took over 100 hrs just to beat the main story alone.

i just saw the remakes trailer and wow they have really done an awesome job in updating just about everything.

This game and whole series even should be available in English (atleast) on as many platforms as possible.

Here is a good article about it

and checkout the script for DQ7!!

I hate seeing this BS posted every time DQ7 is brought up. There is no way those books are just text. That would make DQ7's text bigger than every volume of an encyclopedia. Do you really believe that? Besides, they have translated it before it's not like it's this insurmountable thing.

I also love how S-E and Nintendo seem to be basing sales projections on the sales of the two DS DQ: Monsters spin-offs, which did terribly in NA apparently. They looked like garbage, is it really a wonder they didn't sell?

They're not just text. Those books include maps and handwritten (and formatted) scripts. Here's an example from a similar book for DQ6:
