Does standing the PS4 vertically harm the system long term?

I only ask because it seems like they put vents on the side that you stand it up on. Is that where the stand comes into play? Does the stand offer more airflow in addition to stability? Does standing it up, stand or no stand, make the system work harder?

Yes, there comes the official stand into the game. Without it, you will end up blocking the vents which is not really good. ;)

I've had my PS2 and PS4 positioned vertically without a stand. Haven't noticed anything detrimental to be honest. I thought the stand was just something to protect it from a pet knocking it over?

Mine is on an official stand and it's not very noisy at all.

It's designed to leave the vents open to it anyway.

Didn't they test this and there was a 2 degree difference in heat depending on whether it was vertical or horizontal, with the hottest state being vertical?

I think it's negligible to lay the console horizontally or vertically. Theoretically having the PS4 horizontally should slightly help prevent damage to the system but I think it's more likely for the power supply to randomly go poof than for your console to suffer damage from overheating in a vertical position.

I hope not. You definately want a stand with air slots though given positioning of vents.

I presume they all have these but if any cheap stands don't that would be an issue.

You should remove the stand and vacuum slots regularly though as dust will build up there for sure and that will reduce airflow and cause the console to run hotter than it need be.
