Does the next 360 need to have blu-ray?

If MS takes the 9GB DVD I to the next gen its a massive fail. Games will actually be in 1080p, non of this up-scaled bullshit. That means high res textures, resulting in Gigabytes of extra data. There is a more than adequate solution in Bru-ray, which can store all that perfectly. I would assume a HDD, or flash storage would be used for caching, preventing even the slowest of BD drives from hindering gaming experiences. Blu-Ray has advanced enough to cope with streaming content, they are at 12x.... The PS3 is 1x (I think).

Digital only isn't ready, and games are becoming far too advanced graphically to fit on 1 DVD, even with the best compression.

Doesn't Sony already pay MS royalties for blu-ray because they had something to do with the process used to format current discs? I thought I read that a few years back.

Nope, that is really why MS was so anti blu ray. The blu ray association decided to not use microsoft codecs and UI which would then put other companies to pay microsoft license/patent fees.

Since they didn't, they backed hd dvd which did use microsoft tools/codecs/etc.

hd dvd was the original choice companies backed as their next media format. Sony made the blu ray any way behind the scenes, which worked out for them because hd dvd was actually about 2 years late on their promise, enter sony with blu ray as a back up plan. lines are drawn.

ms is just butt hurt their software isn't inside the blu ray technology.

What I find interesting after all that pre release talk of smaller amounts of space and particular consoles "holding back" the other version.

The 360 version of GTA:IV was 'better' than the PS3 one same with RDR and to a lesser extent Max Payne 3.

As with most things I would imagine R* have refined their engine and learnt tricks and ways around these things.

From what I remember gta4 looked better on 360 but suffered pop ins that the ps3 did not have due to storage size.

devs I think have not been thinking outside of the box with blu ray, didn't kojima copy maps and other things all over the blu ray disc to make read times faster etc

I laughed at the post that said that Microsoft would put Blu-ray playback behind the paywall.

But then I felt really bad, because they probably would, seeing as they are fucking putting Youtube and a shitty console internet browser behind a paywall as well. :(

And with it come higher xblg fees. Which in turns shoots down the idea of getting the cheaper box.

Its a double edge sword for ms, include it and ur kinda supporting Sony, dont and youre giving people (mostly fanboys) a reason to select ps4 over ur console (even tho they are dirt cheap and theres no reason someone shouldnt have one already).

The people who talk about streaming only and blah blah blah always assume everyone in the world is just like them. Everyone has 500gb monthly caps, 20mbps speed.

FACT: NO.

Internet in Canada is terrible for example. And thats a first world country. How in the flying fuck are people who live in Brazil supposed to stream/dl games? Shit, I heard Australia has terrible internet as well.

Oh an sending Messages to friends on Xbox live from the internet on Xbox.com. That is also behind a paywall. I shit you not.

Sending messages to silver friends on the Xbox is not behind paywall. I shit you not.

Kojima made his game reinstall a total of 5 different times while playing the game.

I really hope Microsoft considers a 'digital only' version for the Xbox - Generally, just like with Nintendos new strategy, we should be able to download games at the same time as they appear on retail. I'd rather buy a cheaper console without drive than being forced to buy a version with bluRay drive that I really don't want to use.

How about silver to gold?

Kojima made his game reinstall a total of 5 different times while playing the game.

Lack of understanding how to do an install games. I blame sony more than kojima for that and he finally got it done.

So now you can install once. Doesn't change that kojima pasted maps and assets all over the disc.

Edit:

Also

Blu-ray also has a higher data transfer rate -- 36 Mbps (megabits per second) -- than today's DVDs, which transfer at 10 Mbps. A Blu-ray disc can record 25 GB of material in just over an hour and a half.

Blu-ray (single layer) has like 3 times the capacity of the current 360 medium... Imagine having 3 times the power :P

I do not personally find Blu-ray necessary for gaming but it does not hurt. I would say that it would benefit the next 360 greatly to have Blu-ray but is not necessary.

I think MS will offer their own derivative of bluray, sort of like sega did with cdrom/gd-rom.

ms doesnt want you to buy bluray movies. they want you to buy zune movies.

Blu-Ray itself isn't mandatory a much larger storage format is though, whether that's proprietary or blu-ray remains to be seen at this point however.

For the sake of filling that bulletpoint when competing against Sony though I'd say its a safe bet M$ WILL have blu-ray functionality in the 720 if the read speeds are better and they include a HDD.

One of the detractors of them keeping it out of the 360 was the abysmal read speed and the need to offset that with a mandatory HDD install. M$ actually faired better this gen omitting blu-ray then Sony did including it.

This will not be the case next gen.

Blu ray drive with an optional DLC to enable movie playback.

So a one time playback fee vs monthly gold fee for access?

Knowing ms, if they actually considered both choices, i'd bet they would choose xblg access on a monthly basis.

MS removed DVD playback from WMP in Windows 8 and Media Center is now an addon that you can purchase (it can play DVDs if you so buy it).

From this we can assume that MS doesn't give a shit about optical media movie playback at all. So I can totally see them not support DVD/Blu Ray movie playback next gen.

It's funny, while it technically comes under the "dick move" umbrella, I don't think I know anyone who has ever used their PC or Xbox to actually watch a DVD. Everyone has a DVD player these days.

Hell, even Blu-ray players are under $100 now. I've ripped all my Blu-rays and HD DVDs now and they're packed away in storage. I just loaded them all onto a hard drive and watch them with a media payer. I have a PS3 sitting in my lounge specifically for Blu-ray watching that hasn't been turned on in months.

It's pretty prevalent. I don't know anyone that gives a crap about Bluray. Everyone I know either rents a DVD from Redbox for a dollar or uses Amazon, Netflix, iTunes etc to stream a movie/rental.

You must have a small circle of friends.

Almost everyone I know has Netflix, but they also purchase physical movies. With the Netflix outage that happened earlier this year (Amazon servers shut down), streaming isn't ready to be the primary way of consumption for the masses yet. I would be PISSED if I was in the middle of a game and due to a power outage at a server plant my game just goes dark.

The option of both would be nice, but I'd prefer physical media over streaming media any day of the week.

I really cared about DVD and blu-ray playback about 2 or 3 years ago. I stream everything now. It wouldn't shock me at all if MS skipped blu-ray playback. After all, those licensing fees really add up when you're looking to sell 50-150m systems. Also, as others have noted, MS wants consumers to use Zune.

For me the really wild card is how international consumers with limited internet connections will feel about it. Given 360 vs PS3 sales it doesn't seem like they care too much.

I don't think they'll use Blu Ray. I think they'll use a proprietary high capacity disk format like Nintendo. I don't think they'll do Blu Ray movie playback either. I think they're going to focus on digital distribution services like Netflix and Amazon for movies.

This.

I don't see why they wouldn't, unless they use some kind of proprietary disk instead.

Either option is acceptable, as long as the disc space is enough. Blu Ray is a lot cheaper than it was when the PS3 debuted, so I'm pretty sure the licensing won't be too crazy, and it's not like Sony would turn down extra profit from licensing it to Microsoft.

Blu Ray is no longer a selling point as far as game consoles are concerned. I don't think it'll matter if both the PS4 and next Xbox have it.

I really hope it does have BD movie support, convenience factor is going to be much higher for me personally. GF comes home, can quickly exit the game, pop in a movie and watch it right away instead of turning it off, getting a different controller, booting up the PS4 etc.

Unless you work as an accountant at MS I see no reason why you would be against this.

Windows doesn't play DVD's out of the box either and hasn't for years.

This is bullshit, WMP plays DVDs (NOTE: NO APOSTROPHE REQUIRED) out of the box.

All the more reason it is stupid you cant send messages on Xbox.com unless younare a Gold member. It makes no fucking sense, i can boot up a GFWL game and send a message using a Silver account but I cant just use the website to do the same unless I pay them.

At this point the battle has long been lost. Either they'll go pure DD (which I think is a mistake since you'll have to install every game you play on your system which is going to be time consuming and with limited space if games like Max Payne on PC's install size are any indicator of what we'll see), or they'll include it as just a bullet point and leave it at that. Bluray won the format wars, really there's LESS shame in using it in their next system rather than sticking with multi-disc DVD releases or coming up with ANOTHER competing format (which is just sour grapes). The only thing I could see them doing which could be cool is returning to cartridges via read-only SD cards or the like, but that would be far more expensive.

Oh an sending Messages to friends on Xbox live from the internet on Xbox.com. That is also behind a paywall. I shit you not.

Why would it be free to send and receive messages to someone on xbox live (messages pop up live as they play etc) from a free website but not within the Silver account on Live?

Seems like a pretty unified decision. Don't know what the furore is about.

Does the next Xbox need Blu-ray? No, it just needs high storage capacity disc or flash memory.

Should it have Blu-Ray? Yes, as a media centre, not being able to play Blu-ray movie discs would be embarrassing.

You can send from a silver account either on PC or Xbox.

The fact they used standard DVD's was limiting enough. To keep them for another generation would be hilarious.

So it just needs something better than that.

I think blu-ray will be a part of the system, but I would not be at all surprised if Microsoft sold a 720 without an optical drive, and pushed streaming/digital downloads as the next big thing.

Again

Microsoft is NOT that dumb. We are at least two generations from the all streaming boxes.

Microsoft would lose a majority of it's console business if they went drive-less for 720. It would completely bite and alienate what put them in this position.

I don't think MS is against using BD, but their fanboys seem to be.

I'm sure it'll use Blu-ray.

All media formats carry licensing fees, so it's not like using DVD is free. And the argument that Microsoft wouldn't want to give Sony money is silly, and largely based on the misconception that Sony owns Blu-ray. It's controlled by a consortium of companies of which Sony is just one, and not even the biggest one. Microsoft is no more giving money to Sony for Blu-ray than it already is by licensing DVD and CD, because Sony had a hand in those as well.
