Don Mattrick about to be promoted?

If he gets promoted, it means they'll move someone else in to be the public face of Xbox most likely (probably someone like Whitten, Greenberg or Harrison), which would be a good thing.

Truly extraordinary if true, and a testament to the bubble that Microsoft currently resides in.

Based on performance, he's done pretty damn well since he's joined Microsoft. The fruits of his bumbling over the last month have yet to be seen, and won't be seen until much later in the year.

I was reading the article thinking that hopefully Don will be one of the axed execs. Then I read he is rumored for promotion? SHOCK AND AWE! The whole Xbox leadership team should be axed for the historic disaster that was the launch of Xbox One.

I'm pretty the insular MS leadership team, thought the whole idea was awesome, although a disaster to anyone with a brain. Their software packages work the same way--they cannot be resold, for example.

But it also means that one of the execs resonsible for the whole DRM idea will have even more say in the company...

Man, Mattrick is going to get completely Kutaragi'd at this rate.
Saying crazy stuff at E3? Check.
Generally helping cause a massive PR disaster? Check.
Promotion? Check.
Fired (sorry "retired") & Replaced shortly after promotion? ....

Seconding this one. I'm not about to discredit Microsoft for being idiots; it happens all the time, with about every second operating system they put out.

You might not like him, and he is a bad (horrible even) at PR, but he is a valuable person to Microsoft

In the three years since Mattrick has overseen the division, the Xbox 360 installed base has grown from 10 million to more than 50 million worldwide, while the Xbox LIVE membership has increased from 6 million to over 30 million. At the same time Mattrick is recognized for moving the interactive business from an operating loss into a sustained and profitable business for the company.

Mattrick is also largely credited for his work in bringing Kinect for Xbox 360 to life. Mattrick unveiled Kinect under the code-name of “Project Natal” at E3 2009 on stage with Steven Spielberg. Kinect which is a “controller-free gaming and entertainment experience” for Xbox 360 launched in November 2010 worldwide and sold over 8 million units in the first 60 days, making it the fastest-selling consumer electronic device, according to Guinness World Records. By early March 2011, the device reached 10 million in device sales. The product has been seen as highly innovative and has won numerous awards including being named one of the top inventions of the year from Time Magazine.

In October 2010, Mattrick was promoted to President of the Interactive Entertainment Business, a role that has him reporting directly to the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer. In this role he is responsible for a collection of consumer businesses including Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, Kinect, Music, and Video, as well as PC and mobile interactive entertainment.

Fortune Magazine in August 2011 named Don Mattrick one of the “Smartest People in Tech 2011” largely highlighting his ability to turn around the Xbox business and drive new consumer innovations like Kinect. In May 2012, Don Mattrick was named one of CNN Money’s top 10 brilliant technology visionaries.

lolwat ? They need new blood in the Xbox division, clearly the vision of the people who designed the Xbone is in direct conflict with what gamers are actually willing to pay for.

Maybe the whole drm thing was a ruse?Since the removal of drm it seems like a lot of people forgot all the missadvantages of the xbone.

Yusuf will be the new head of the XBOX division

Don't get me started on that idiot. His very presence, demeanor and total disconnect from the market he's operating in makes me furious.

Robbie Bach, J Allard, Seamus Blackley...hell, even Peter Moore were leagues above the current management (Mattrick, Spencer, Whitten, Mehdi, ...).

Xbox One didn't even come out yet. How do you know if it will fail?

Damage has been done, the way MS started this leads to pretty much
MS sales lagging behind Sony, add to the fiasco they still at 499.99
adds more to that lagging behind sales view. They are on damage control mode before the console is out, thats not good.

The Xbox One might do just find despite the last month, but I don't think too many people here will argue that the last month was a PR Disaster. Perhaps instead of the word launch I should say unveiling + E3.

Doesn't mean anything. The casual consumers know nothing of this. Just like the Netflix fiasco a while back, separating their departments and charging more, people will forgive and forget within a month or two.

Mattrick is the President of Interactive -- if he gets "promoted," it will be off the Xbox team. Companies can't just get rid of executives; they are usually under contracts. When a VP/Pres sucks in one part of the company they just move them to another area. Either that or the exec leaves the company for an "exciting new opportunity."

Sometimes people who do shitty jobs get 'promoted' to a less meaningful position to avoid the bad shit that comes from a firing. Most likely he'll be 'promoted' and put on a 'special projects' team and never be heard from again.
