Don Mattrick about to be promoted?

If he gets promoted, it means they'll move someone else in to be the public face of Xbox most likely (probably someone like Whitten, Greenberg or Harrison), which would be a good thing.

Based on performance, he's done pretty damn well since he's joined Microsoft. The fruits of his bumbling over the last month have yet to be seen, and won't be seen until much later in the year.

Exactly right.

I like Phil Spencer, he seems like a good guy although perhaps a little too assured I think the developments of Microsoft Studios under him will prove to be a good thing.

I'd be interested to see what would happen if he got promoted. Whitten and Yusuf are not people I would want in charge.

I wanted to fire Ballmer and Don Matrrick.
No one at MS can clarify the questions to the publics regarding Xbox One (DRM ect).
Xbox One is a total mess, under power .....

Major Nelson will be promoted :)

Mehdi would be the ideal exec if he could just conceal what an utter psycho he is. Mattrick is more like a lovable, haggard puppy who wags his tail even as he shoots you in the face.

But yeah the MS E3 presentation was like some kind of encyclopedia of psychopathology.

They need to bring Peter Moore back to run the Xbox division. When he ran things the Xbox brand grew. He bought studious. He brought JRPGs and a wide selections of genres to the platform. He signed exclusive deals to bring great core games of all genres from the West and East to the Xbox. Under Moore MS E3's were barrages of great core games aimed at core gamers.

Under Mattrick, MS sold and closed most of their own studios. Mattrick stopped signing exclusive deals and saw the exclusive lineup dry up. Mattrick turned MS E3's from core gamer central into Kinect Family Fun Hour. Mattrick takes core gamers for granted and acts like it's more important to chase non-gamers with a focus on TV, sports, and Kinect.

The core gamers have migrated back to Sony, who is doing gangbusters since Kaz took over. Mattrick gambled. Mattrick lost. He needs to go.

Nelson caused just as much of the PR mess as Ballmer and Mattrick at E3.

This has been coming for 6 months now.. I don't even know if Xbox will be impacted. But this is an attempt to streamline the company so maybe all divisions will be impacted. Just bring back J Allard and make Bono CEO.

Whenever I see him now, I'm reminded of this tweet. Thanks, Jim.

Mattrick was in no way responsible for the success or otherwise of the 360, that wave was being paddled into before he got there and he rode it to the shore.

he needs to be judged on a project he has had full carriage of. the Xbone and so far it has been a complete and unmitigated disaster.

he isn't competent to run the IED at MS, he is disconnected from reality and appears to manage by spreadsheet.

But I want to keep seeing his smirk face in E3 press conferences, never gets old.

Failing upwards.

:-P

Let me repost my comment from the Off-topic Microsoft execs thread:

Microsoft
Entertainment and Devices Division
Operating Income (in millions):

2005: (-$485)
2006: (-$1,284)
2007: (-$1,898)
----Mattrick joins Microsoft, quickly promoted to Senior VP, Head of Xbox + PC games
2008: $445
2009: $357
2010: $517
----Matrick promoted to president of IEB
2011: $1,257
2012: $364

Under Mattrick's influence, the ED&D division finally became profitable for Microsoft.

ED&D will have to start posting Operating Losses every FY for Ballmer to force Mattrick out.

Most likely, this restructuring will have Mattrick in a senior role.

Under Mattrick, MS sold and closed most of their own studios.
Since Mattrick joined MS in 2007 they have:

Closed down:
Carbonated Games
Ensemble Studios
FASA

Sold:
Bungie:

Aquired:
Twisted Pixel Games
BigPark
PressPlay

Founded:
343 Industries
Black Tusk Studios
MS Osaka
MS Victoria
London Lift
Team Dakota
GoodScience Studio
Kids & Lifestyle Entertainment
Soho Productions

You may say what you want about Mattrick's E3 conferences or presentation skills, but Microsoft Studios has expanded a lot under his reign.

Why let Bungie go tho. That Destiny game would have been a huge exclusive for them now. Very stupid of them.

Do we know much about Microsoft Studios Osaka? I read something on Gaf about a potential Lost Odyssey sequel and that they might be developing 3 games (can't remember when/where I read this so might not be true)

Don't get me started on that idiot. His very presence, demeanor and total disconnect from the market he's operating in makes me furious.

Robbie Bach, J Allard, Seamus Blackley...hell, even Peter Moore were leagues above the current management (Mattrick, Spencer, Whitten, Mehdi, ...).

Well, guys like Seamus and Ed Fries weren't there for the 360, they basically created the brand and ventured into things in 2004 or 2005. They brought that hardcore image to the Xbox, and J and Peter Moore helped extend that to the 360.

E3 2004... Oh, the irony...

Massive culture clash between Bungie and MS. Bungie would probably have been forced to continue working on Halo rather than new IP.

And thats the problem with them imo. They dont let their companies be creative enough. Im happy theyre investing in exclusives games, but how long can they expect to keep all those talented people on board when all they do is plasma pistols for 10 years. You have to let them be creative every once in a while. Thats how you get the best out of them.

Agreed. That's their biggest mistake this gen imo. Bigger than Rare's downfall.

Maybe they really wanted to go independent?

They could have just let them do what they wanted, thats what they wanted in the end. Freedom to do the game they wanted and from the looks of it, it looks to be a huge potential exclusive lost just cause they wanted more Halo out of them, which theire still getting one way or another, just from someone else. They still have Halo, but dont have Bungie or Destiny exclusivity. Thats a huge loss on their part just cause they had no vision.

It's true that any fault of a division usually falls on the person at the top, That's just the way leadership works. Yet, I'm not sure you can call him incompetent and disconnected from reality. Of all the things in the 5 years he's been in the position, the Xbox One PR problem and his interviews are the only thing he's really done wrong. You can call him boring and terrible at interviews and conferences, but Xbox has thrived under his wing.

The weird part is that they have no problems with Black Tusk Studios making a new IP. Or Team Dakota's Project Spark.

Not to mention the smaller stuff like Twisted Pixel and PressPlay's games.

Maybe. I think that Bungie's ambitions had something to do with it, though.

Bad call if true...seems like the MS I know.

But why?

Mattrick's Kinect strategy was brilliant from a business perspective and continued to establish IEB's authority over ED&D. It extended the life of the 360 and brought millions of new customers into the Xbox ecosystem.

Ya, so it must mean that Bungie wanted more control and profits then. And they were in a very good position to demand it.

Some shitty Kinect studios and the rest we don't know a damn thing about or have seen their work at all.

Still a huge loss tho. That kind of talent costs money, one way or another.

THIS

No one remembers how good Peter Moore was at the head of Xbox.
Remember the GTA IV Tattoo?

Whomever came up with the DRM and used game idea should be "promoted" the fuck away from the consumer market.

I would feel bad for whoever has to take over. Terrible timing. Mattrick retains a successful record, some poor shmuck has to deal with the ongoing XBone fallout.

Then again, maybe this next box will be a huge success.

Well duh. It's a given that not every new studio will develop ultra hardcore AAA games.

BigPark, Soho Productions, GoodScience and KALE are interactive TV/kinect studios.

MS Osaka, MS Victoria and London Lift are unknown at this point. I suspect that the first two are core oriented.
Don't forget that Phil Spencer mentioned that they've opened up five new "blockbuster studios".

That still leaves:
343 Industries: Halo 4
Black Tusk Studios: New AAA IP
Team Dakota: Project Spark

Twisted Pixel Games: Lococycle
PressPlay: Max: Curse of Brotherhood
