Don't block ads on NeoGAF they said...

If you're adamant about letting GAF ads get all up in ya biz, one thing you can do is to use something like scriptblocker and allow "Google Syndication" through. This'll surface the actual ads, but shouldn't let any additional, potentially harmful scripts through.

I don't know if this has any bearing on metrics for tracking ad revenue or anything along those lines though. But the ads are there! Clickable and all.

the thing is is that I shouldn't be having to do this

it's very annoying and frustrating that these things cant be taken care of quick and easy and why they're happening at all.

Gaf mobile is completely unusable. Every time I visit I get redirected to some scam ad and usually have to close multiple ad auto-opened tabs per page load. The ads on PC are fine but mobile ads are becoming some seriously shadey shit because they basically hijack your phone for a few seconds and who knows what kind of info they may extract.

Mobile redirect ads with vibration have been the worst. I think I was able to address that issue by turning off notifications on Chrome as I haven't had any since but it might be unrelated.

So that's not just me that gets redirected on new sites from GAF. Never got that until recently. At first I thought I caught some spyware or something on my phone, but tonight I got the same thing on my PC.
The site I got redirected to tonight was adnety.com. A site specialized in... pop-under ads. Well it opened in my current tab so I wouldn't call it pop-under.

Sometimes while browsing GAF, my phone would vibrate twice, and if i try to go exit the page, ill get a notification saying that if im sure i want to leave before making changes. The same type of notification you get when making changes to accounts n stuff like that. Fuckkk that

People are getting malware/ransomware? Fucking hell that is scary. I'm blocking on desktop, waiting on gold to support, but what the hell can I do on mobile to stay safe?

the issue of making a patreon is that if you get banned you will stop providing money

but at the same time I want one set up and hopefully we go way over its bare minimum cost to keep it ad free and running.

GAF mobile works fine for me on iPhone (iOS).

I did get an annoying audio ad on Desktop GAF (Safari) for the first time today.

What's more concerning is that it seems nobody on the moderation team is paying attention to this issue.

Serious malware/adware infiltration and radio silence...

What the fuck?

If they're not seeing it, then how are they supposed to know. Did you notify a mod or Evilore about it? Last I checked there's 100k people on here and ads are served up based on your location etc.

I let Cyan know about an ad that was causing me problems and s/he responded immediately that they would let Evilore know.

Mods are not admins. AFAIK the mods can't change how the site works.

You can whitelist GAF on adblock so it lets innocuous banner ads through while keeping out the malicious crap and popups. Works like a charm for me.

I keep getting redirects to "clicknety" and "namefuze" every time I click something here and now Malwarebytes is finding stuff on my computer.
Please fix this.

Same. I also noticed yesterday that something crashed half of my system yesterday (macOS) which in hindsight was probably an exploit attempt, and since then I've noticed injection links and really weird stuff going on. Currently running a virus scan on my system, which I haven't had to do in years. This is not cool.

Has an admin or mod commented on the current problem? This is very unlike the administration staff if so. Makes me concerned for the future of this site.

i turned off adblock for neogaf domain and i have never had any of those such ads thankfully.

but thats a bummer for sure

I hope this redirect nonsense gets fixed soon :(
I wasted my afternoon reinstalling windows thinking I had a virus haha *cry*

Browsing this thread on mobile thinking "I haven't had any problem ads" and then Chrome fires a message saying it blocked a popup.

I don't use ad blockers so this must just be Chrome's security doing its job. I still see the ads at the bottom of the page.

I reported a few ads today that weren't even banner ads - it was playing a cut off chunk of a video ad for Lip Sync Battle.

I also get redirected to random sites while on GAF sometimes too - doesn't happen anywhere else I visit.

I really would rather just pay a subscription fee at this point and have an ad-free experience, because I value my security and peace of mind and am willing to pay NeoGAF for it so they can stay profitable.

I think only evilore and one more admin can mess with ads.

I feel like that's a huge mistake. Sometimes I feel like the system behind GAF is way too closed off and secular for its own good. There's no reason the assuredly trusted Admin (not mods) team shouldn't have the ability to change ads to better fit the community.

I'm starting to get these fucked up ads on the desktop version. I never see ads of this... quality on any legitimate sites.

At a certain point you have to realize it's Evilore's board for Evilore and his friends. The rest of us are just guests here.

Just got hammered with about 3 pop up ads as well. Every time I click on "Subscriptions" or any of the tabs in GAF (Gaming, Off Topic, etc.).

Um I clicked this thread and a pop up link tried to start loading, while the thread opened in a new tab

wtf?

Just had one for adnety.com hitting reply to your post and another one on another thread.

I keep getting new tabs open up with ads when I click on random threads. Sometimes it will happen when I try to click on a picture to enlarge it, or to select spoiler tagged text....

I got like one popup in a tab redirection when hitting reply, what the hell is going on, happened twice so far. Ran two scans didn't find anything. Something must be going on.

Edit: on Desktop.

What scanner did you use for mac? Had pop ups yesterday and didn't think to run a virus scan for that exact reason (it's been like...half s decade).

Just got two random redirects, one to a possibly malicious site. what the fuck

edit: just happened again

It's not popup behavior I've seen before. Whatever I was clicking in GAF moves over one tab to the left and the adnety opens in the tab position I had been in, but I get moved to the GAF tab.

On desktop Win7 using FF.

Yeah this shit is infuriating because I have GAF pinned as a tab in Chrome and this makes GAF appear as a regular tab while the pop-under ad appears in the pinned tab.
