I hope that it is not crazy to think that for this single case there exist thousands of teachers facilitating the actualization of independent reasoning in a kind and stimulating manner.

We're talking about US public schools here.

I would have laughed at her too as a fellow student if I knew she was just her parents tool. In fact I did it in high school at many a classmate who'd say the stupidest shit (I went to a highschool with many, what I'd consider, very well off people).

I think that's to be somewhat expected coming from peers. My peers in the workplace make fun of some of the things I do, I make fun of some of the things they do. It was like that in college and in high school.

Maybe one of these hyper-political news-cycle-addicted families can send their kid to school in an Obama t-shirt in a conservative town and call us all out on our hypocrisy when the teacher asks them to change and we storm the school with our pitchforks.

Fine, if what that girl said really happened, then the incident should be investigated and if necessary, the teacher should be suspended or fired.

I think not making that assumption is naive.. and someone who would have their daughters hold up an American Flag for the marketing of their business is likely not shy about stating their politics to their daughters.

If the teacher believed the shirt violated the dress code, the kid refused to change, said, "do you want people to think you're in the KKK?", asked her to go out into the hall, said, "guys, can you believe she's wearing this shirt? tell her how racist it is!"

then no, it isn't. This is business as usual in an American High School. You must have had an awesome school experience.

I had a teacher who told my parents I wasn't "very smart," my sisters both had teachers who targeted them directly, and all three of us had pretty easygoing times in high school. Full disclosure: that was in private school, but it was accepted as a normal part of being in high school. Many teachers get burned out and in response they dominate their students. Teacher will probably have to take some trainings, maybe an anti-bullying seminar or something. But this just isn't that unusual.

In my work in public schools, I've seen teachers teach untrue information, tell kids they were never going to get it right, talk homophobic shit about the gay kids, make fun of kids for their accents...the list goes on and on and on.

If a teacher got fired every time a line like this was crossed, not only would we run out of people who met state requirements really quickly, but we would only restock the ranks of people who shouldn't be teaching in the first place.

Teacher needs to be educated on better classroom management and reminded that her students are human beings with feelings. If she gets fired, it'll only be as a result of the media circus.

Lol. The truth is that of course this person shouldn't do shit like that, and maybe one day when we all live on the starship enterprise there will be enough good people in the world to fire people who are rude to children from the profession.

I hope that happens, but right now that isn't where we are, and I know reliably secondhand that it CERTAINLY isn't where the Philadelphia schools are. Sigh, etc.

It really would not be that surprising to see this be totally true. There are plenty of fucked up teachers out there who on a daily basis demean and berate students.

Add in the Obama factor and it just escalates even more.

Earlier this year had a teacher yelling at a student and saying they could be thrown in prison for not showing Obama enough respect because he is President.

I've I feeling this is a case of news agencies not letting facts getting in the way of a good story.

We had a story in the UK where the England football manager was asked on the tube if player x will be playing in the next game, to which he responded with the answer that he's now 34 so I may go with someone younger.

The papers are running the story daily for a week now, how he's supposedly said players x career is over to a stranger before telling player x and that's it, it's embarrassing, the manager should be sacked and apologise etc etc....
