Fuck you! You were a 35 year old man working at McDonald's and talking about how you don't like Obama because he doesn't like white people this summer and now you're a fucking intellectual?

I am VERY glad to see that we can now have intelligent discussion on politics, religion, etc, but why is your only counter-argument: "you're being very closed minded". No, I'm stating my beliefs. "You are being extremist and closed-minded."

Actually, studying Politics has made me understand less about the world's problems, and how to solve them. Maybe that's been the actual lesson: Shit's complicated and there's no easy answer or more often than not, any definitive answer at all.

I've also discovered that Socialists and hardcore Libertarians have more in common than you might think: both believe they have the one gospel truth when it comes to solving the world's economic, political and social issues.
 
I have a polisci degree.

I think anyone taking even Intro to World Political Systems gets wonky.
 
The worst is a dumb women's studies student.

I am a feminist, but I hate it when some dopey turd tries to lecture me about something funny or sexy. So much shrillness, so little understanding, too many slogans, etc.
 
Day one of my Ethics class was basically a platform for soft-headed college kids to give their dumb opinions about politics and society. It only got better when some of those idiots dropped the class. The problem is, some of these people really don't understand how the world works and think everything can be solved if we just did whatever author X says.
 
All the PoliSci majors who wandered into my philosophy classes would constantly say things like, "well in my experience" as the basis for their arguments.

So much rage.
 
Outdated theories are the best.

I remember discussing sexism/gender roles with a friend on facebook when one of his "college educated" friends jumped in quoted Freud to defend crazy shit.

Which is odd cause most cclasses I've taken disclose that Freud was mostly wrong before delving into his body of work.

Oh and people who love communism. How the fuck can you defend and wish you lived in a communist country, oh you took a class on it once, ok, carry on.

Sounds like you need to have a conversation with the person that pissed you off rather than bitching about it on the internet.
 
I actually kind of miss at least an attempt to be intellectual that comes with some colleges. Some of the people at my school are so fucking dense, sheltered and shallow. There are cool people too but I took this one class where every one was really up their own ass.

Knowing the theory behind shit and being able to understand how it applies to the real world, rather than in a vacuum (which is most classroom settings), are two completely different things.

A lot of people never reach that second part.
 
I never seem to offend people when talking about politics. I guess it's because I'm so matter-of-fact about it, talking more about details like tax rates and less about general ideas.

This is the point I'm constantly trying to get across to my sister. She's always bitching about how ignorant her co-workers are when her one-liners about how bad "Obama suxxx" are met with "no you're wrooong".

In her world view, a single man is responsible for "the economy", completely overlooking 30 years of deregulation and cutting tax rates as well as the Eurozone constantly floating on the edge of disaster.
 
People who equate schooling or education to real world experience is gold. Smile every time someone like that opens their mouth because that is a rich experience.

Something thats always amused me about talking to pure socialists and pure libertarians is that inevitably they talk about how there ideal society will work. Listening to them I came to a revelation. Any society in which Socialism will work is a society in which Libertarianism will work and vice versa. You need the same altruistic, rational, forward thinking, and most of all nonexistent population to make both of them work.
 
My favorite was my Intro to Philosophy class where this one kid decided to be the guy who "challenges the professor".
I looked forward to class because I knew he would say something stupidly adversarial during the instructor's lecture and then get destroyed.

Never before has a face deserved a fist so badly.
 
As an undergrad Poli Sci major at the University of Utah, I heard some things that came close to causing a stroke. The best was the rabidly conservative kids who thought that just because the professor was a conservative, it gave them free license to spout talk radio bullshit non-stop. So bad.
 
IMO cultural history classes are actually a lot more informative for generic "understanding the world" without giving you the pretensions of thinking you know everything. Its amazing what you can learn from history when its presented as more then just a timeline.

I think you might have actually been in my class :) . God that guy was annoying. It got to the point where "class" was really a discussion/argument between him and the prof. I am amazed that I passed that class, with all the back and forth.

I had a pretty good sociology class for that too.
 
I'm more annoyed when people talk about politics in a class that has nothing to do with politics. Like they just learned something new the other day or had an idea and want to sound smart and you can totally tell they are shoehorning their ideas into what their talking about and totally derail the class. That shit was always so much more annoying.

i feel like theres always that one guy in every philosophy class without fail. its like zelda and the cycle of the chosen hero (or in this case the chosen idiot)

those debates were the best part of class considering how extremely boring philosophy was
 
The worst one is the burgeoning super left leaning 19 year old that finally noticed there is injustice/racism in the world. They they go looking for it to be indignant about.
 
Ever have people going the opposite direction and concluding that "everything is fucked?"

I don't mind the sentiment but sometimes such a person takes it as a license to steadily become a cynical asshole.

Conversations on relevant topics becomes so distasteful that I end up just wanting to work.

They might become good supervisors someday

When I return to school, at age 33, I'm going to stay away from polisci classes. I will occasionally bring up a political topic just to shake my head at it, but I can see myself becoming an arrogant jackass debator, so I'm trying to control myself.

This. People slip. Sometimes people are on the ready for anything they find offensive.

You wake up, you have some coffee or a Red Bull, you slog to work and you see a couple of women in the front corridor and say "hello ladies" in a voice still think with sleep and

"I AM OFFENDED BY THE TERM 'LADIES'!"

Fine. I'll get back to you later and apologize when I'm awake.
