Doom 1 Episode 4 (Thy Flesh Consumed) is ridiculous

E4M1's difficulty is kind of artificial because there are no health items except a few potions. But I do like the Ievel for the smart and intense use of a small space.

There are 2 large health packs in that first alcove near the starting point, I think one of the 2 switches in the room opposite the start opens it

-edit- nm, they are not there on UV difficulty. Its that little room where the green armor is

Oh, also, I'd like to add that most of Inferno really wasn't that hard at all. Hell, the hardest thing in it is the Red Key room in Warrens (the secret level). That one took me a couple tries. Beyond that, though, the difficulty is pretty even. The Spider Mastermind was a huge joke, though. 6-7 BFG shots and it goes down. As long as you get through the prior level with a pretty good stock of Cells, you're pretty much good to go. Took me under a minute to beat it.

I've been steadily making my way through Doom 2 with the help of Brutal Doom and the Doom Metal Vol. 4 Soundtrack.

Looks like I'll be giving Thy Flesh Consumed a go tonight.

Dang those modern Brutal/Metal mods are magical.

Like others above, I recently played the complete collection on console ... and yeah, playing on UV without cheat codes was a huge shock :(

Yeah, I've only played with god mode.

Unfortunately I will never play the 360/PS3 versions since I enjoy playing with Brutal Doom and GZDoom.

I somehow managed to get past the first stage (which is apparently the hardest Doom stage ever on Nightmare, fortunately I'm playing on Hurt Me Plenty)

I was nodding my head in "I know that feels" agreement until that difficulty choice. Muscle up!

You're playing with the arrow keys like we all originally did right? Don't be using no mouse or Gamepad!

I played through the original DOOM last year, and when I hit this level, I beat it and then quit. I couldn't stand the design compared to the first three episodes.

From a design perspective, I think the episodes got progressively worse as they went on. Same with Quake.

And this coming from someone who really likes both games.

Yeah the first 2 levels are really difficult and require some clever positioning in terms of taking down certain enemies. It gets way easier though. Just try Doom 2, or try the expansions from Final Doom(I know not officially from ID). You will be holding Ultimate Doom in a corner rocking back and forth saying "Never again, never again". Promise.

I started Doom II (which, just like the first one, I played a lot as a kid but never made a serious attempt to get through it) and yeah, I definitely notice an increase in overall difficulty from the first game.

That's like saying that a level full of monster has an artificial difficulty because it is full of monsters.

Difficulty is difficulty. Usually is done tweaking the ratio between enemies and resources. You can change the ratio both upping the number of enemies and leaving resources as they are, or lowering the number of resources.

I think lack of health is generally a faux pas in doom level design, especially where there are a lot hitscan enemies so whether you get hit or not in an open space is completely up to chance.

I wish Doom Classic Complete was out for Vita. Makes me nervous having a system I can't play Doom on in some form...

Same here :-(

I think I completed Thy Flesh Consumed back in the day.
I can't recall much of those levels though, but one tiny detail I still remember is that each map's 'exit' was a pool of nothingness you had to jump into. That was quite odd.

Change "ridiculous" in the thread title to "fantastic" and you'll be back on the right track. They were brutal, but that's how it was.

Wish my kids were older. I could just bust out the 360 and not give a fuck about them seeing exploding demons and whatnot.

Thy flesh consumed is old, right? Not like the new chapter that was made for the XBLA release of Doom 2?

Not sure if relevant, but I remember Romero saying in an interview that some of the later levels in Doom were designed first, so that the earlier levels were better designed and gave a stronger impression for people starting the game.

Such a good episode for the first Doom.. Really hits you in the face with the hardest slap, and forces you to stop dilly-dallying.

And completely agree, E4M2 is simply divine/hellish.

Get crackin' on the Lunatic wad once you're done with it:

With the most amazing music

Man, I just tried Thy flesh consumed for shits and gigs and he wasn't kidding, this shit is impossible.

I've always been shite at Doom though, I find Knee Deep in the Dead incredibly difficult on ultra violence, I must unlearn all the useless filth modern shooters have taught me.

Need to git good

Pretty sure I beat the episode on Hey, Not Too Rough about 7 years ago. I tried it again recently on Hurt Me Plenty and it really is ridiculous. First map throws a baron or 2 at you when you only have a pistol and some shotgun ammo, and imps and pinkies seem to be constantly teleporting in or coming out of closets. And the map itself is tiny.

Speed and The Twilight and Caged from Final Doom: Plutonia will chew you up and spit you out and rub you in the ground with its foot
Casali maps, whether for Doom or Quake, are some of the hardest around. I really think Dario's talents haven't shown through his work at Valve, at least not until TF2 gave him a chance to show more individuality again.

I was in 6th year in primary school when I first played this (1995 or 96 not sure). I had nightmares filled with cocodemons for days :)

In the 90's with my first experience playing the games my dad's friend only used the mouse and he was awesome at the game. I started using the mouse, but became keyboard only in the late 90's.

What's funny about revisiting the game years later, is that I got sooooooooo used to playing the game with TC Wads (such as The Simpsons) I'd only ever play the game with them on.

Playing my Doom permadeath mod thing (here for the curious), I can beat the original three Doom episodes easily enough on Ultra Violence but I can hardly make it two stages into Thy Flesh Consumed.

It's such a huge leap over vanilla episode 3.

yeah Ultimate Doom is a successor to vanilla Episode 3 and pretty fucking brutal. Wouldn't make sense if its as easy as E1.

Man, just remembered that this level had great music, too. It's that "Donna to the Rescue" Track. Bobby Prince rocks.

Played through DOOM and DOOM 2 for the first time in 2012. The only part of "official" classic DOOM I find to be bullshit is Plutonia Experiment.

I recently played through everything in DOOM Classic Complete on Ultraviolence and the start of Thy Flesh Consumed was probably the hardest.

Yea I remember beating it once on the XBLA after multiple attempts on ultra violence and never wanting to do it again.

The levels with tons of lava and just barely enough space to maneuver on were brutal.

Thy Flesh Consumed is something they went back and added for the full retail release of Doom (Ultimate Doom) around 1994/5. They'd already finished working on Doom 2 and were starting work on Quake but they had a contract with a publisher that mandated an extra episode, so Romero and a few of the new kids bashed out the new episode in a hurry and didn't really think about it too much.

Here's a breakdown of who made which map:

E4M1 Hell Beneath
  • American McGee

E4M2 Perfect Hatred
  • John Romero

E4M3 Sever The Wicked
  • Shawn Green

E4M4 Unruly Evil
  • American McGee

E4M5 They Will Repent
  • Tim Willits and Theresa Chasar

E4M6 Against Thee Wickedly
  • John Romero

E4M7 And Hell Followed
  • John Anderson

E4M8 Unto The Cruel
  • Shawn Green

E4M9 Fear
  • Tim Willits

Speaking of the music E3M3 Pandemonium's 'Deep In The Code' is the shit.
Yep that's my jam

Casali's are geniuses, even if they took a lot of inspiration from Doom 2 maps

Just went through Doom II's "Tricks and Traps", and man, what a level. :lol It's a little bit gimmicky, but it's just so much fun.

It also says a lot about how hard Doom II is gonna be when they give you a BFG less than 1/3 of the way through the game.

Beat Doom plenty of times on the other difficulties and E1-3 on Nightmare.

I couldn't get past E4M2 on Nightmare…

You've made the right decision with Hurt Me Plenty.

It's a bit much compared to 3 though. The other three have a perfect difficulty curve, then E4 feels like a sequel to Doom 2 as a Doom 1 episode.

well, it was made after doom 2, so it kind of is.

i just replayed e4 last night because of this thread- ultraviolence, keyboard only in chocolate doom. i mean, if i can manage that it should be a cakewalk for anyone on hurt me plenty :)

m4 and m6 are definitely the toughest and most interesting maps. probably the only official maps where i actually have to make safety saves every once in a while.
m1 is incredibly short and actually pretty easy if you know where the triggers are and don't try to kill everything on the map.

I'm playing Ultimate Doom on Ultraviolence now and the first three episodes were a breeze, but man - E4 is kicking my ass even with savescumming and ocassional cheats.
