Doom 3 BFG edition. Anyone excited for this?

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLYYYYYYY SHIT, I forgot how good that Doom 3 theme song was. One of the best themes in gaming, as far as I'm concerned. It was done by a band named Tweaker although often incorrectly attributed to Trent Reznor, if I remember correctly. Reznor did the original Quake soundtrack, though, so I can understand where that comes from.

I learned to play that thing on electric guitar back in 2005, it was very, very easy. Great tune to crank out to enjoy some distortion and loud volume in Drop D tuning.

Here's the tabs, they're super simple if anyone is interested:
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/misc_computer_games/doom_3_theme_tab.htm

You just have to remember to palm mute the 0-3-7-3-5-3-2-3 notes. I love the way those notes escalate into un-muted power chords on the 4th repetition, it just fucking kicks ass.

He was also originally going to do all the audio for Doom 3 as well but that ended up falling through. I could be wrong but I believe the audio heard in the Doom 3 Alpha build was done by Trent.

Judder. It's painfully obvious to my eyes.

When d1 and 2 are loaded on ps3 the XMB runs at 60 fps btw.

I know that XMB usually runs at the same framerate as the current running application, but can you confirm the ports are running at 60fps? Can Doom 1 & 2 on PS3 be accessed outside of Doom 3 like on 360? Considering Doom 3 is a 60fps app, this might explain why XMB sticks to 60HZ even when playing Doom 1 & 2.

Got the PS3 version today. Started up the first hour of Doom 3 and I have to say, it runs great but I was hoping for some extra visual effects. I think my memory of it on my PC 8 years ago was a bit exaggerated. Still though, it holds up just find with gameplay and I really feel like October is the perfect time to revisit this classic. I still love the audio when everything goes to hell in a handbasket in the beginning. Great stuff.

That audio has been stuck in my head for the past 8 years, popping out every time I watch a horror movie :D

Eh, I dunno, I don't play consoles.

--------------------

Also, firstworldproblems, Doom 3: BFG launched at such a low resolution that it automatically resized all the windows I had open in the background into tiny little boxes.

$20 to upgrade my copy of Doom 3?

I don't really see the point, should be cheaper if you already own Doom 1+2 and the Doom 3 expansion. Doubt the extra chapter is worth that much. At $10 I'd bite.

You could actually download Trent's sound files from the alpha and use them in the normal game. Don't think the same mod will work here though.

I love Doom 3 but that theme song is horribly generic. It's not a huge departure from the Duke theme, which has a lot more charm.

Grabbag is obviously a classic, I won't disagree with you there. I don't feel it takes away from the greatness of Doom 3's theme, though. I think it sits up there with E1M1 and Grabbag just fine.

Wrong. The Doom 3 song is awesome. It harkens back to the glory days of Tool, IMO. I was seriously bummed when I bought the Xbox version and it didn't have that song in it. Very pleased to see it plays at startup for D3 BFG. :)

It's a shame that the sound effects of the BFG edition will likely be the weedy default crap. I modded in the Reznor made sound effects and it improves the experience so much (especially the shotgun). I feel sorry for the console players now who cannot mod..

I imagine it'll be patched on PC with additional stuff like Rage was. It's probably just to get a 360 port out at the same time as the others, then they can add PC specific stuff later. I imagine Rift support isn't actually in yet right?

Nothing to do with consoles (judder, I mean).

is mainly for consoles.
Everything I hate about modern gaming summed up in a few short words.

They could have done more, don't give me this shit. Something has to justify this costing $30 on PC when you can get it for practically free. It's mere existence doesn't count.

As a PC gamer of the 90's maybe I just expect more out of iD and don't realize (or are in denial about) how far they've fallen.

It's in RoE on the Xbox though, which I enjoyed quite a bit (and the awesome Doom II Master Levels). Speaking of which, are all the official Doom I and II expansions in? Like Thy Flesh Consumed and Master Levels?

I think I ended up clocking around an hour and forty minutes on the Lost Mission content.

It feels pretty stilted at the start, transitions to something that resembles Doom 3 content and then ends up feeling like rushed / patch up content. You'll be dumped into arenas of spawning waves of monsters.

If you don't own the expansion or have played Doom 3, it's not a bad choice - the art has held up pretty damn well for its age.

I also spotted a nerve.wad file along the Doom 1/2 WADs in the Steam folder, anybody know what that's about?

Any more enhancements probably would have struggled on consoles. On PC you'll probably be able to work some mods in eventually.

They are aware this has less value on pc, that's why it's $10 less, $20 if you own the original.

Any more enhancements probably would have struggled on consoles.
Well, ya obviously. Who said they have to be the same?
I gladly would have paid $40 rather than $30 for a superior PC version. Unfortunately the seven year old boxed copy of Doom 3 in my closet isn't eligible for the discount on Steam.

The fact that developers are so content with having a certain level of parity between PC and consoles when the PC is just so disgustingly far ahead angers me to no ends.

I'm not saying that they should cater to enthusiast users like myself who have spent waaaayyyy too much money on godly PC hardware, but they could at least attempt to take some kind of advantage of PC hardware and not allowing the game to look like "consolized shit".

This is what bothers me about the merging of the consoles and the PC, and they just sprinkle their games equally amongst all, but they're not equal. The PC has very specific advantages and developers (the vast, vast majority) don't give a shit enough to even attempt to take advantage. I miss the 90's.

Is anyone else having a hard time launching Doom 1 (PC)? Sound works but my screen stays on the title screen. I can even shoot my gun and stuff lol. Maybe it's due to my funky config (I have a dedicated PhysX GPU/PPU). Doom 3 launches fine...

Thy Flesh Consumed was right there in the episode list, but I didn't see Master Levels. I only loaded up Doom 1 though.

Again, it's a port for consoles. They wouldn't put a ton more enhancements for a secondary platform, that wouldn't match mods available for the original anyway.
That's your opinion. I don't consider the PC to be secondary in regards to Doom 3: BFG.

They're doing the same thing they're doing on consoles, taking a 7 year old game (that was also available, poorly, on consoles) and bringing it to modern hardware. Except that the PC is just so leaps and bounds ahead of what the consoles are capable of that I absolutely can't stand the ball and chain, the PlayStation 3 shackled to my left leg and the Xbox 360 to my right.

I'm not talking about Doom 3, specifically, I'm talking about gaming in general. Just using Doom 3: BFG as a catalyst for my self-righteous indignation.

At least it has Thy Flesh, which I love. The Master Levels are in RoE, which makes that such a sweet package for me. If BFG has that then it'll be my replacement (and allow me to unhook my Xbox).

Well, the whole point of Doom 3: BFG is to introduce/re-introduce the series to console-ites. The PC was kind of a toss-in as is pretty obvious by the resulting product. They know us PC guys already are frothing at the mouth for Doom 4, whereas a lot of console folks are more familiar with Call of Duty/etc. over Doom.

There's frothing at the mouth for Doom 4?
I mean, maybe when they actually start talking about it. My mouth remains unfroth'd until I see at least an in-game screenshot and an estimation of a release date. The fact that it's on earth has me excited, though.

Also isn't Doom 4 being developed simultaneously for the PC with the PS3 and X360? Doom 4 is still shackled at the ankles and will suffer for it on PC.

Give me another Crysis, fucking do it, I will lose my shit. Something that takes advantage of a PC without having to worry about ancient console hardware (even though the consoles weren't ancient in 2007, but it goes to show the disparity between a game developed for PC in 2007 and console games of the time and how it's only gotten significantly worse in the 5 years since, because the console hardware sure as hell hasn't got any better). Except make a game that doesn't suck like Crysis so people will actually buy it.

I don't hate consoles, I hate the fact that 7 year old consoles hold back my gaming experience on an entirely different platform. I didn't make the same complaints in 2004/5, because the Xbox and PlayStation 2 didn't overstay their welcome, just about when they were getting there the new consoles came out. Just disgustingly fucking long, at this point the X360 and PS3 are mangy, old, deaf mutts who shit themselves on a daily basis and need to be put down for their own good. This console generation has lasted 2 years too long already and they haven't even ANNOUNCED the next set yet. Gaming technology needs to be pushed forward, not be content to stagnate like it is now.

John Carmack and others used to carry the torch for PC gamers. I miss that.

Obviously this is all just experiential conjecture, who knows Doom 4 could come out and totally be considerably (key word, because everything is obviously default better on PC) better on PC than on consoles. I appreciate games like Sleeping Dogs that put out PC HD Texture packs, it really means a lot.

At this point, I'm quite sure that Doom 4 is being developed with next generation hardware in mind.

Also: Crysis doesn't suck.

Last iD said they're working Doom 4 for PS3 and 360.
Obviously I hope you're right, though. That would benefit everyone, except for the small few who have a shit PC or don't plan on purchasing a next-gen console right off. But then, they don't deserve to play Doom 4.

And on Crysis I'll only give you that the first hours don't suck.

antitrop you're right (about Crysis, too). If they target the next generation of consoles with Doom 4 the power should be sufficient to not compromise game play (specifically enemy count) for graphics/frame rate or vice versa. Ideally it's down ported from PC to consoles, though, that's not probably not going to happen. id has an opportunity to again stimulate the whole PC market, which they fucked up with Rage (clarification: I loved Rage).

I apologize if I ask a question that's been answered many times over but does this support the visual mods and weapon sounds? Never beat the game but I really dig it. I'd like to pick this up if it does, or else I'll just go with cheap regular copy of doom 3. Having never finished the original or the expansion I'm not going to worry about lacking the new content.

Funny, I didn't like Rage and I don't think I would go that far. I'm not really sure how Rage fucked up the whole PC market. Clarification, maybe?

The few things fucking up the PC market as I'm concerned are piracy and development primarily for ancient console hardware with the PC as an afterthought.

Just get sikkmodd and wulfen's texture's and be happy. You'll be enjoying an experience that the current consoles couldn't ever run. With all the settings on even my 580 can't run it.

Not that they fucked up the market but that id missed an opportunity to stimulate it. I'd say it did harm to id's reputation as a PC developer. I and many of my friends have (now some had) a lot of faith in id and yet it came out with half-baked support.

The whole game, from the last part of the game to the post-release support, felt as if they wanted to abort mission but it was too close to release to drop entirely.

I had all sorts of trouble trying to set this up with cfx amd 5870s. I put it on my play "when I switch back to nvidia" list. Damn shame, too.

It should run fine on ATI cards but you have to turn off parallax mapping.

It makes a game from 2004 look better than most 2012 games. Amazing how talented this guy is.

I feel like Crytek should hire this guy. Or at least some studio that takes advantage of cutting edge graphics. POM is so underused in games.

Damn. Why'd you have to go and piss in my Cheerios? Having a blast with DooM 3 on 360 and you have to go and post sikkmod screenshots...

...FUCK

So I've only ever played the original Xbox version (I liked it ok), is this worth getting on 360? Do the controls feel good, and is the tearing very bad?
