Doom 3 BFG edition. Anyone excited for this?

POM is so underused in games.

So true. Last console game I've seen with insane POM was Perfect Dark Zero. Those bricks, those walls, those floors. Stunning.

So I've only ever played the original Xbox version (I liked it ok), is this worth getting on 360? Do the controls feel good, and is the tearing very bad?

It is definitely worth it if you liked the game a lot. I haven't noticed any bad tearing since I started playing (360 version). Controls are tight, but not all that customizable. But really, 60fps is the star of the show here. Of course there is nothing to be write home about if you can play it on PC, but as someone who enjoy being impressed by the capabilities of current and past consoles, I am pretty amazed by this port.

Now comes the real question. To the guy who posted those screenshots what kind of specs do you have and what FPS do you get?

Sorry, what is POM?

Parallax Occlusion Mapping.
Notice how the pipe has depth. It works like a fake 3D model. It's height map is baked in sort of like a bump map. It's like a precursor to hardware tessellation that is common in DX11 games. It gets rid of flat textures and makes them look like they actual contain geometric parts within them.

Now comes the real question. To the guy who posted those screenshots what kind of specs do you have and what FPS do you get?

Around 50 Fps on a GTX 580 and i7 2500k. The textures aren't intensive on performance, they just take up VRAM. Most of the fps loss is from the HDR that is added.

Ok, ya, I totally remember that from Perfect Dark Zero. It was awesome. The game was shit. The graphics, minus the facial models, were great.

Dark Ops kept PDZ in my 360. One of my favorite multiplayer games of all time. Such a shame that everything else about the game was laughably awful.

It was pretty much forgotten about after it was discovered in 2005. A few games used it around then but I suppose it was too prohibitive on the 512 mb console RAM to actually get any use later.

What's weird is that UE3 supported it day 1, yet nobody used it afaik.

What does Sikk mod do exactly?

It's a total graphical overhaul for the game. It adds every graphical trick developed since 2004 to id tech 4. HDR, Bloom, FXAA, SSAO, sun shafts. Once it's all enabled it makes id tech 5 look like a joke.

It's also outrageously customizable. You can select several different hdr algorithms and pick which one you like best. Almost every single value can be modified.

When you combine it with the texture pack it looks like a next generation game.

so i got quad buffering working on my AMD card with my HMZ. anyone playing this game on anything other than an HMZ in 3D is really missing out. the detail in the blacks, the complete lack of crosstalk... FPS + HMD... yeah, until we get the Oculus this game really demonstrates the benefit of the HMZ more than most games.

i can see where the complaints of the 3D being terrible come from having seen it on my 3DTV. it's really the perfect storm of suck for a game to demonstrate all the shortcomings of current 3DTV tech. lost details in the darkness due to the glasses filtering out light. about as bad a situation as you could invent for crosstalk (loads of pitch black next to relatively bright things). that laser sight ghosting all over the shop making it hard to aim.

although, the shotgun lasersight needs fixing. it's way off from where it's really aiming when i pull the trigger.

an FOV of 98 seemed about right for the HMZ. 105 was way too fisheyed. i'm really glad i picked this up for $20, even if we PC gamers got the short shrift on the Doom 1 and 2 versions in this. i'd love the 60 fps and 4 player split screen PS3 owners got. maybe if we bitch enough it isn't too late to patch it over.

Do I need to download both the standard and RoE versions, or just download v1.2?

Just download the 1.2 one if you are playing through the regular doom 3 campaign. If you also want to play RoE, then download that one as well. They run as separate mods in each game so there is no overlap.

Make sure you also download the Wulfen texture pack if you want results like the ones posted above.

Oh, for the love of God, unskippable cutscenes in an FPS? Ugh.

You could skip cutscenes in the original unless they changed it in the BFG version

This is completely disgusting on PC. I must be missing a setting somewhere.

THERE'S SO MUCH HORIZONTAL TEARING I CAN'T EVEN TAKE IT.

The revisionism in doom 1 and 2 is really weird. They altered a few sound effects, like the super shotgun reload (terrible), and changed the red crosses on medkits to pills. They could have at least done the music with better soundfonts. The original midi blows these out of the water played on my soundcanvas, or even just a good soundfont with bassmidi drivers.

It's also absolutely hilarious how the old flashlight model is just lazily smashed through the doomguy's shoulder, complete with the handle clipping out the back. Good lord, id.

May I ask why you even bother with the BFG edition if you have a high end PC. Unless you really want to play the lost missions.

Turn on Vsync? I saw no tearing at all. Also while there is auto saves I also can report you can quick save at any point on PC.

So there was this dude a couple of pages back who said the PS3 version has a lot of tearing etc, anything similar on the 360 version guys who're playing it now ?

I was looking for some stuff in my basement and lo and behold I found my Doom 3 game!

It just so happens I also found this tonight:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/cverdzislav/downloads

It installs all the best graphics mods including textures models guns effects and what have you, and it only seems to leave out the extra options menu of sikkmod, although it definitely includes sikkmod. At some point I'll get the BFG edition but as it is I'll play alongside you all with the original. This mod looks amazing.

Oh I do have one question, what difficulty is Doom 3 fun to play on, ie not frustrating but not boring? It's been awhile.

lol at the downgraded armor texture. Even the original from 2004 was higher res than that.

are you even trying id

It really sucks that this is the same studio who went that extra mile with detail in the original with the interactive panels

God damn Sikkmod is too much. I really need to get Doom 3. I'm one of the I think few people who found Doom 3 to be scary. I'm playing through Deadspace but not digging the gameplay so far so I think Doom 3 would fill this October thrills void real well.

I don't know how your system compares other than the cpu, but I've got an HD6950 with 2GB VRAM and an i5 2500k. Would this be adequate?

How is Doom 1 and 2 on the ps3? Widescreen smoothed graphics or is it the horror story I read a few pages back where it's 4:3 with black bars everywhere

It should be fine. You may want to turn off HDR and just use bloom. Keep most of the settings off and just use the texture pack.

Got it.

Btw whats this about needing monoxead texture pack?

No. Lights on your shoulder, the graphics are worse.
this is just embarrassing. why wouldn't they use the original textures...This is one of those times when I all I can do is look down and shake my head.

cool, thanks man.

Intel 2600k
Nvidia GTX 570
16 GB RAM
SSD drive

With those specs what kind of performance should I expect in sikkmod/texture pack at 1920x1200? Should I disable anything?

it's not just the textures. the flashlight doesn't even cast shadows anymore.

Screen shot please.

I would but...since the game doesn't keep autosaves at the beginning of every level anymore I'd have to restart and get through 2 levels of unskippable cutscenes again to find a mirror with the armor on. I'll let someone else do it.

i5? i7? Either way I would say you can probably hit like 40-45 FPS with that setup. Guy with a 580 earlier said that's what he got, shouldn't be a substantial difference between 580 and 570.

I feel like Crytek should hire this guy. Or at least some studio that takes advantage of cutting edge graphics. POM is so underused in games.
Sadly POM is not very good in terms of stability, QDM is much better. (1)
Have been really hoping that more people would use proper displacement methods, preferably one with proper silhouette and multiple layers.

hmmm...interesting. i'm not ready to spend $40 for the PS3 yet, wish it was $20...but damn close to it for the 3D for my HMZ..lol
