Doom II Headed to Xbox Live Arcade

Wasn't the original PC Doom 1 and 2 capped at 30fps? I know it can run 60+fps with mods such as Doomsday but Im guessing this is why XBLA versions will be capped as well ... They're merely emulating the original code.

Yes they were originally 30fps, but the option of 60fps is always nice it can always be optional. The XBLA version wasn't emulation, it was a port.

Well we can only hope ..There really is no reason it cant run at 60fps then.

3. Install the psx soundtrack

WTF is this shit? If I start up E1M1 and I don't hear the sweet, sweet "duh DUNNN duh DUNNN duh DUNNN duh DUNNNNNN duh duh duh duh DUNNN duh DUNNN duh DUNNN duh DUNNNNNN" sounds of Bobby Prince's "At Doom's Gate," someone's gonna have to choke a bitch.

I think the ps1 version is a remaster with better quality, I don't know. I never played it.

Doom 2 on XBLA looks pretty awesome. since I have source ports and prefer mouse and keyboard I won't get it, but man, the 360 finally gets a good shooter am I right.

The PS1 version is a new ambient soundtrack. It's pretty awesome but different than the original.

Doom just doesn't feel right without the old general midi soundtrack.

Add another vote for Doomsday engine, though. Best way to play the Doom series (or Heretic/Hexen) as far as I'm concerned.

oh, that sounds like the awesome Doom 64 soundtrack then. might have to check it out because while Doom's music is pretty iconic (since it's, you know, ripoffs of metal of the time) new soundtracks can be pretty good.

which reminds me. anyone who owns Doom 2 on PC should check out The Absolution, a Doom 64 total conversion mod with a few extras.

On that same site, you can listen to the DOOM and DOOM II PS1 soundtrack.

Yeah, but it's worth mentioning that it took the ZDoom guys like five years to get 60fps working in PC Doom. The entire engine's timing is written around 30fps, so I wouldn't expect anything else.

fixed.

Bleh. All that junk destroys the sweet, classic Doom 2 charm.

I haven't played with the upgrades myself, but I have to agree just judging from vids and screens I've seen. As with the 16-bit re-releases we've seen the last few years, I MUCH prefer the original look to glossy "upgrades." They just weren't designed for that level of fidelity and trying to impose it onto them just looks ridiculous.

Oh, hell yes. The XBLA version of Doom is excellent, the only thing that needs improvement is the weapon switch speed.

True dat.

Well... that, and mapping the map to the D-pad. I fired up Doom today in celebration of this news and like every time I died it was because I tried to switch weapons and either couldn't get something up in time or accidentally wound up in the map. :lol

Also true. Doom is still a gorgeous game in all its software-rendering glory. Beautiful sprite work and fantastic design that doesn't need modern 3d trickery to look good.

Don't forget!

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil for the original Xbox includes bonus content of complete versions of, DOOM II and Master Levels for DOOM II including 2-4 player Co-Op or Deathmatch via split-screen on one Xbox or on multiple systems via System Link.

And it's backwards compatible. So you could have been playing it for years if you really wanted it.

Awesome. I always love a good excuse to play Doom 2 again. Hopefully the netcode will be better than worthless this time. Though even if is, the SP is more than enough fun already.

Now someone get Monolith to ok a port of Blood and I'll be very pleased.

Yeah. I don't want to beg, but Wolf3D ain't enough.

i believe W3D on PSN was ported by Nerve, who's also doing this port job. i think it's not too much to ask that they release a Doom 1 & 2 pack on PSN as one game, charge us accordingly (for two games) put in the trophies, and call it a day.

hell, i'd pay upwards of $30 for Doom 1, 2, the new episode they made for 2, and "Final Doom" in one sweet package- with all the features the 360 versions have.

i have doom 1 and 2 on steam but it won't let me turn off lookspring. (even though it says it's off)
