Doom OPEN Beta (April 15th-18th) and DLC (season pass, $40) announced!

Players not making any noise when they get hit and/or die is bothering me way more than it probably should be.
I can understand that and I feel the same. I still have fun, so I guess that's the most important part. But it's hard to shake off that feeling. I'll admit I was REALLY hoping for jump grunts and was pretty bummed there were none. Sure, jumping obviously wasn't a thing in D1/2, but still, as soon as Quake came around it was like an id standard, lol.

Agree with you, this game would really benefit from:

- Increased movement speed.
- Getting rid of loadouts, the game needs weapon pickups instead.
- Music during match or at least some riffs or music cues when things get hectic.
- Better ambient/weapon sound equalization.
- Better announcer, someone with a better voice and doesn't so dull.

The way things are right now the MP is getting sent out to die, sure people will play it first couple weeks maybe some months but after a while most people will be bored with it or will be forgotten.

The issue is that these problems are deeply rooted into the design and would require map overhauls, though it pains me to say this but right now the game seems balanced and fine the way it is.

It's just the current product isn't that good and it's coming out in 26 days...

If they were to add weapon pick ups, they would need to restructure maps and change where the armour and hp locations are as well, this requires effort.

The mere existance of loadouts has already determined the viability of many of the core systems inside the game, if loadouts were removed and weapon pick ups were placed in that would mean actual weapon balance would have to be done instead of what the other user said, a sweeping plethora of mediocrity. Would the already pointless leveling up system be simply for cosmetics? But they already have DLC planned that adds weapons, but since it looks like all weapons are pretty lackluster they don't fear anything gamebreaking from adding in more weapons.

The entire audio department needs to be fired, because they didn't do a damn thing. If my OBS wasn't broken and I had a video editor I would record footage of CQC Shotgun battles where I don't hear a damn thing coming from the opponent but I hear far away rocket launchers. Do they have grunts and pain noises recorded? Do they just have a whole new announcer on hand? Why won't they just reuse Mick Gordons OST for the Multiplayer? Again all this takes effort, none of which I expect from a company that is a shadow of it's former self, with BETHESDA being the shadow puppet master.

The whole thing is rotten to the core and would require another half year to fix/implement. I usually don't go off on games like this but right now it's a mishmash of just things that most shooters do wrapped under the Iconic name of Doom. I'm not asking for a new quake or a new UT, but I really am just insulted by the seemingly low amount of effort that was put into this. What multiplayer designer would sit down and just give the ok to no pain noises, zero readability as to if you're being hit(even call of duty shakes your screen if you get shot...isn't that the series everyone tries to copy?) and melee finishers? Such basic, core things missing that would make the game that much better.

I had fun playing it, I really did, but I don't see myself playing this for more than a few days tops since you just point and shoot and get easy kills/points do to the super streamlined weapon system.

This is the finished product, the word 'Beta' has meant extended preview demos for quite a number of years now.

You can't make an arena shooter and have loadouts. You need to have power weapons on the map if you want to make an arena shooter, otherwise it just wouldn't work.

Loadouts mean all weapons end up being mediocre and the one pickup that is available is ridiculous i.e. Demon Ruin which is just a way to get easy kills. The game is indeed trying to cater to different kind of audiences and will fail at that.

This is not a 60$ game. No way. The campaign is only* 13 hours long, and the mp isn't appealing. Its fun, but I dont see myself coming back for more after a nice grind. I hope Snapmap is going to be good.

*By the devs, this means even shorter campaign.

Has everyone already gotten their fill of the game and given up? I just got a moment to sit down and download/play on PS4 and it's been searching for games for at least 10 minutes.

No, the matchmaking just takes fucking forever. If only there was some way for players to browse a list of servers and pick the one that they want to play in, but I guess technology hasn't come that far along yet.

Went to give it another chance , it just irks me too much that I actively loath a Doom game but yea...uninstalled after 25 minutes. The core, VERY core mechanics of this game are dreadful for any game, let alone Doom, there is no way SP will not suffer the same issues for obvious reasons.

Yup.

Finally made it into a game. My feedback seems to mirror most of the things that have already been said but here it is anyways:

  • No music in game. This is a big one since the game basically feels lifeless and dead because of it.
  • While it runs really smoothly and I don't have framerate issues, it looks like a free game (ala Warframe, etc.)
  • There's no redeeming qualities to this game at all. There's nothing that sets it apart from anything else on the market. Will go back to point #2 in that this feels like one of those cash-shop free games.
  • I uninstalled this after my first match. I couldn't even feign interest after the first 3 minutes of my first match.

Agree with all the negative points being made. Absolutely true. Such a shame.

So upsetting seeing one of your most loved franchises of over 2 decades sitting in death row, waiting to be slaughtered in a month. The reviewers must be licking their lips to rip this to shreds.

It's generic, it's dull, it's painfully average. Everything that DOOM shouldn't be. A huge shame.

Maybe I just need some of the coolaid that the audience drank during that E3 demo. Those weird whoops and cheers during the cringeworthy executions.. God damn.

Finally got around to trying this out. What a quiet and boring experience.Where are the ambient noises? It doesn't make any sense. It's like the stages are just holograms in a big empty room and the guns and rockets are just air dispensers. Everything feels oddly weak and quiet. I just don't get it.

I think a lot of these complaints above me are insane. Seriously what were your expectations?

I agree with a few of the complaints. Lack of music in game is a bummer, the announcer sounds pretty soft for a game like DOOM. It needs a more prominent indicator for when you take damage. The demon rune is a bit obnoxious because it seems severely OP at the moment. Also the rocket launcher needs to be buffed.

That being said, complaints about fundamental things like movement speed, weapon pickups etc etc are silly. DOOM is a hybrid between arena shooters and modern shooters like COD/Halo. Why is this not ok? Quake exists,UT exists. Why does DOOM need to just be a rehash of those games? DOOM hasn't been like that for over 20 years.

Maybe my standards are low or maybe I just enjoy being able to top the consistently top the leaderboards in a multiplayer game for the first time in a long while, but I've really been enjoying my time with the beta. Been playing mostly on PC using a DualShock 4 and I've had no issues competing with everyone. I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy this multiplayer when I started, but now I'm definitely picking up the game at launch in order to play more of it.

Serviceable arena shooter. Game failed to meet even my rather low expectations.

Because hybridization seems to have failed somewhat. It tries to cater to 2-3 different type of FPS players and just can't keep all the balls in the air. To me game comes across as something that doesn't really have own solid identity because it tries to cater to so many types of FPS players at once, and being riddled with issues it just pushes overall experience to negative. If hybridization had been successful maybe game would have gotten better reception.

That said I do think that this being ID game it has generated certain MP quality and style expectations. Apparently Certain Affinity co-op developed MP with ID, this could explain why this is so little... ID of old in style.

Also it seems that on consoles this beta is getting positive ratings in 4-5 / 5 stars, but on PC it's overwhelmingly negative. Could be because PC players have longer history with ID and expect certain style of FPS from them?

That's the problem. There is nothing "DOOM" about it. Everyone calls it a clone of another game because it's just a pile of modern game ideas thrown together with nothing that makes people think it's DooM. It's a huge dissappointment that not much effort was put into DooM to make it what it was while adding things to it.

Another beta happened during this time, Overwatch. That game is a clone of TF2 but when I played it, not once I thought bleh it's just a TF2 clone but damn how polished the game felt and the personality the game oozes has that never made me think bleh it's a TF2 clone.

So running around with the super shotgun in a DOOM map blasting other players is not "DOOM" enough for you?

It looks like super shotgun, but doesn't sound or feel like it. For me personally its not DOOM enough. If I empty super shotgun to your face from point blank range I expect you to go down, not happening here.

I've really enjoyed the Beta on Xbox. I'm not sure I will buy the final game yet as I am hesitant to buy map packs for games that I play casually and very few games seem to be worth $60 at launch these days with all of the buggy releases, season passes, preorder bonuses, and other content that makes it seem like the real price of every game is closer to $100.

A few thoughts:

1. I genuinely feel for the fans who want more Doom 1/2 multiplayer. It would be great if a team could make a true 3D game in the style of Doom 1/2. There is certainly room for it in the current shooter market.

2. The movement speed could certainly be faster.

3. Loadouts seem unnecessary. I would prefer weapon placements on map.

4. If weapons are on map then they should be powerful. The shotgun feels weak likely because it had to be "balanced" as a starting weapon. Spawn everyone in with a plasma rifle and let us pick up the other weapons.

So what you're telling me is that a dev took a popular IP and shredded it to pieces?

color me surprised

And people will probably eat it up because HEY IT'S DOOM!

This open beta looks like a joke, very amateur hour stuff. Essence of DOOM is lacking. These devs don't get it at all, but I wouldn't put it past Bethesda to ask for such ridiculous HALO features in a DOOM game.

So running around with the super shotgun in a DOOM map blasting other players is not "DOOM" enough for you?

Yes. This is a result of loadouts where everyone can spawn with what they want. So weapons don't mean shit other than what you prefer to use after you die and spawn again and again with and not the power of that weapon you picked up or ran after in the map or grabbed from a fallen foe. This also largely affects map layout.

Now that they turned on v-sync to eliminate the screen tearing on PS4, I think it actually feels better than the PC version. Is the single player on PS4 going to be 60 fps also?

DOOM is a hybrid between arena shooters and modern shooters like COD/Halo. Why is this not ok?

Because it says DOOM on the box, an extremely history heavy and ultra influential franchise that's considered a gaming masterpiece. Many fans have an incredibly long history with it. Sorry, it does not say Quake, UT, Halo, CoD or whatever else on this product...even if it did, it's still inferior to any of those franchises' latest iterations. Essentially, Doom is being reduced to a B-grade me-too knockoff of a series of games that are already Doom knockoffs. Shockingly enough, people think that's bullshit.

To put it into perspective, it's been an almost 12 year wait after Doom 3, and this bargain bin shit is the best they were able to cobble together? Yeah, it's depressing and yes I am pissed about it as a long time fan of the series. It's not like there's a vendetta here, I've never WANTED a sequel of a franchise I love to suck, it's just that proof is in the pudding and all the sirens for a massive face-palming failure are sounding.

The Campaign and SnapMap will definitely have a number of advantages over the Multiplayer:

-Access to entire arsenal at all times
-Weapons will all have their proper damage output (ex: the Super Shotgun and Rocket Launcher will obliterate the lower-end demons)
-In-game music
-Faster movement speed (which can be unlocked via the progression system in the Campaign or by simply changing the variable in SnapMap)
-More damage feedback from the demons. Screams, grunts, knock-back, etc. See below.

The Campaign and SnapMap will certainly feel a lot more "Doom".

HOLY SHIT SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT.

And so many people don't understand why long-time fans are upset.

Doom 3 multilayer was also a cobbled together mess that died instantly. iD put very little effort into that if you remember. So before that we had DOOM 2 multilayer which was hugely influential mainly because it was novel and unique. So after almost 20 years there really isn't an iteration of DOOM multilayer that could rewrite history look DOOM 2. The genre has been done to death and I'm pretty sure it's not worth iDs time to do more than what they are doing with new DOOMs MP.

Didn't like how the game played at all, hopefully the campaign is better. Going from Halo 5 to this is just jarring, there doesn't seem like much feedback.

The entire audio department needs to be fired, because they didn't do a damn thing.

I'll admit, listening to old school metal when in some intense bouts and maneuvering can help set the mood.

I've already recorded a whole bunch of footage on PC (several entire matches), so I might dig through it and make a compilation of the best examples of the game's shit-tastic audio mix.

Still have not been able to connect to a match here in Japan but hopefully I can today. Would love to try this game and see if I agree... which it seems like I would. Maybe save this one for a rainy day used purchase, seems like it will fall quickly.

I tried and gave this game another shot. I played a couple of matches and I unlocked a weapon.

Unlocked. A Weapon. in DOOM

This game reminds me of Halo 4. The devs didn't know what it want it to be and paid the price.

This a blast on consoles. I used to be a PC gamer back when quake 3 first came out and this brought back so many memories of a style of game that literally doesnt exist anymore. The consoles need a game like this - and more like it. I wasnt expecting much at all from the beta but loved it. Its just pure fun and doesnt take itself too seriously.

With more playtime we found counters to the demon powerup and it acts as a great comeback mechanic that made so many games very close and down to the wire. Almost every game for 2 straight hours was close - even a 250-249 warpath round. I got a buddy I used to play Team Fortress Classic with to dl it and it was like going back into a timewarp. Let the gibs fly. Refreshingly retro.

It likely will be a low key multiplayer title but I can see a hardcore following stick with it for awhile on consoles.

I'm loving this beta SO MUCH! Really, didn't expect that. I'm at level 15 for a long time so i get no rewards for playing, but still do.

Gameplay is just one point, multiplayer with no mini-map and just learning the scenario is pretty awesome. Knowing where the health packs, ammo and armor are is vital for not getting killed.

Really hype for the full game, this is just my multiplayer thing. And i don't usually play competitive multiplayer.

I'm guessing that those of you who 'hate' the game, are basing that hate on the fact that it's different and not like old school Doom. There is nothing that you could describe as shif on offer here. Sure, you may not like the direction they took with it, but there is nothing on display here that someone could objectively describe as shit.
It's a solid MP that a lot of people seem to be enjoying. You wanted something that calls back to the classic MP. Unfortunately, if they went in that direction, you'll quite possibly find nobody but the hardcore fans playing it.

too bad it launches like next week so this was effectively a multiplayer demo :P

I'm sincerely shocked about the negative impressions, I seem to be part of the very small minority who's enjoying this game... But still, I'm having a blast with it.

I'm surprised that it's being compared to COD. I just never got the impression that this multiplayer was ever supposed to be a main selling point of the game. I've always just thought that it's just a fun additive component of a primarily single player experience. And it plays so well.
