DF Retro's recently-released DOOM episode got me to thinking about the Doom RPG, Orcs & Elves and Wolfenstein RPG games. As far as phone games went, these games offered some pretty interesting game play back when they were released. I'm curious as to whether any of these games are officially available and playable on any newer hardware (phone or otherwise), as well as which other dungeon-crawler games that're more readily available have similar levels of depth (as in, not significantly more complex).

Also, assuming that you've played any of these games, do you remember them very fondly? I remember playing through at least Doom RPG, Orcs & Elves and Wolfenstein RPG, although I never had an opportunity to play Doom II RPG. I may have played Orcs & Elves II, but I can't remember. I remember all of these games that I did play, however, being very enjoyable for me. It wasn't very often that I'd buy a phone game and play it in its entirety, but these games always managed to hook me from start to finish.

I miss these games, too. They were great for their time and hardware.

There was a Nintendo DS version of Orcs & Elves. That's probably the best version of that game.

I have Doom 2 RPG on iOS. I really enjoyed it. Remember it being more fun than it had any right to ex

Am I correct in assuming that you purchased it a long time ago? I couldn't find any of these games in the iTunes Store, so I suspect that any of them that were released on iOS have long since been de-listed.

DOOM 2 RPG and DOOM RPG on old phones were the shit. Probably the most fun I've had pre-smartphone era

Yeah, these games and Metal Gear Solid Mobile were really a cut above most phone games at the time.

I played Orcs & Elves years ago on the DS without ever realizing that it was an id game. This is kind of blowing my mind right now

Given the fantasy setting, I'm kind of curious as to why they didn't just make a Heretic RPG or Hexen RPG. Not sure if they own those IPs or not, but surely having those names attached would've given the games even more attention. Not that Orcs & Elves wasn't solid, but I feel like it's kind of the odd man out here in that it's not named to fit into a pre-existing series.

I pretty sure Doom RPG was the first cell phone game I finished.
Great game. I would play them again on the Switch.

The rights to new heretic and hexen games are in like bizarre legal limbo where it's partially Bethesda and partially Activision, at least as I understand it.

They should re-release id's trilogy, each game was better than the previous one.

DooM rpg had the combat (Which was a clever solution for the keyboards at the time), Wolfenstein added world-building to the formula, and DooM II was pretty much the apex of anything learned up to that point.

I loved orcs and elves on my old phone and recently grabbed the DS release to replay it.

It's a shame the rest weren't also released on DS as well, I'm not sure how you'd replay them today?

come to think of it Doom RPG is probably the only 'mobile' game i've ever played and completed in earnest.

Doom RPG was insanely good, never could believe a turn-based Doom would work so well. To this day probably my favorite mobile game ever, and this was before smartphones offering more ambitious games. id are masters at offering godlike experiences on limited hardware.

Really liked Orcs and elves on the DS. Was disappointed that the rest was not released for the DS.

Sad if the rest was lost forever.

Yeah, it's crazy to me that these haven't been re-released, given all of the renewed interest in Doom and Wolfenstein. I imagine that these games have held up pretty well.

Doom RPG was probably the first phone game I ever owned back in 2006 or so. I remember playing it in college on the pooper between classes.

I was just thinking about these games the other day as well. Doom 2 RPG is on the iOS App Store still for 1$. Some reviews report it being broken after iOS9 tho.. anyone want to report back with current functioning status if they own it already?

If I recall correctly Wolfenstein RPG is revealed to be a prequel to Doom
with the final boss being the cyberdemon before he was cyborgized
.

I had Wolfenstein RPG on my old dumb-phone, and it was a lot better than I expected it to be. As for Orcs & Elves, I played it on the DS, and also thoroughly enjoyed that.

Is there no way to play these games anymore? I wanted to try Doom RPG, but can't find it anywhere.

I loved playing the Doom RPG on my Motorolla Razr. I also loved this life simulator called New York Nights and I wish I knew of a way to play it again.

Orcs & Elves was pretty much just an excuse for Carmack to make a game with his wife and I don't think they ever really sought to make it into a huge money-spinner. She spearheaded all id's mobile stuff back then, from memory.

I vaguely recall a blog post from Carmack talking about how he spent his honeymoon coding the DS version.

Doom RPG was so good. Didn't play the others. They really need to be ported but the native resources are sooooo low that they would probably need to be rebuilt from the ground up

Yes, I played the dumbphone versions of all of them, and they're really the only dumbphone games I'd ever have any interest in playing again. They are, of course, pretty simple, old-school, turn-based RPGs, but they're breezy and well-paced and very addictive. They stick to the formula, but they get it right.

I even picked up the DS version of Orcs and Elves. It didn't change much, but it looked nicer.

I played through Doom RPG on the last flip phone I owned before I switched over to smartphones. This was some years ago at this point but I remember really liking it. Played through Orcs and Elves on the DS and really liked that too. I'd love to see these make their way to PC so I can try the sequels and see if the originals hold up.

Seems Doom II RPG is on the app store. Does this work with modern versions of iOS? I'm also assuming iOS 11 will kill it...

Doom RPG got me through some really boring days at a low-wage job

Yo this right here. I worked a landscaping job during my summers when I was in college and there was a lot of sitting around and waiting in between the actual hard ass work. A lot of tat time I used to play whatever games I could on my old ass phone, the Doom RPG was one of them.

Just re-downloaded it on my iPhone and it works fine. My OS is up to date.

However, I'm sure the upcoming iOS 11 update will kill it for good.

:(

I used to play Doom RPG like a madman on my old Sony Ericsson slide phone.

Man it was probably around 2005-2006 during my university years.

I also had a Paris Hilton themed bejeweled clone

I wish the Doom RPGs were on Android. I played a lot of the first and it was really fun.

If anyone could recommend a similar enough experience for smartphone (Or 3DS, I s'pose!) that'd be guud.

Edit: Like the poster above, yeah, played it on my W595!

That sounds like something Carmack would do. XD

I've already updated to iOS 11, and I don't see it listed, so this seems to be the case.

Those games were so fucking cool and I wish they'd get a visual upgrade and ported to Android.

Orcs and Elves DS rocked my world when I happened upon it randomly at a Gamestop used one day for like five bucks.
