SnapMap isn't so much about building maps as it is about creating experiences.
(SnapMap creations only support up to 4 players)
Maps are built using a tile set. You are given a collection of pre-made rooms from the campaign that you can snap together. There are no outdoor pieces and there doesn't seem to be more than one texture set. This makes SnapMap a very simple, very easy to use level editor for consoles, albeit possibly too simple for KB/M.
Maps can be snapped together in minutes and AI can be set to control enemy spawns and item placement on its own. Then you can go into your maps and fine tune everything. Set monster spawns, link spawns or doors to picking up an item, place items and weapons where you'd like or tie them to killing a specific enemy or have a BFG appear in a special place after a specific barrel has been destroyed.
These are very basic ideas that help build a foundation for more complex maps. Puzzle maps, co-op maps, maps built to push the system, build strategic bosses! One of the Snap Maps I played was a working keyboard, cowbell, and drum sequencer! Another had a mancubus that could only be defeated after setting his armor on fire with 2 computer terminals. And yet another was a memory game where you had to memorize rooms and answer questions about the rooms.
SnapMap also has its own UI for searching for player made maps at random or by name or user, so like Mario Maker you can easily waste away a day just messing with random maps people have made. They can also be shared cross-platform!! PC/PS4/XB1 can all play each other's maps (though not together).
Let us share our maps and creations! Our wacky concepts, remade stages, survival maps, mazes, and of course some 4-player co-op well thought out goodness.
This video is a good 5 minute look at the potential of SnapMap, a good explanation of its functions, and a look at a few of the unique creations thrown quickly together by id software that you can play right now.

They plan on adding more to it later with patches, so expect more room types, add-ons, and logic options.
