DOOM's single-player being streamed (2PM ET)

For some reason the chaingun still sounds weak to me, maybe it's being drowned out by the music in this clip.

The vanilla chaingun sounds really punchy as expected, but the "mobile turret" mod has more of a humming sound effect. It's there and it's pretty loud, but it's not the sound one expects. So maybe you're not listening for the right sound.

With that said, the chaingun is used three times in the video, and I don't hear anything the first time it's used. But then I hear the humming the next two times.

starting to realize i cant decide on PS4 or pc.

my pc specs. core i7 920 oc 3.6 ghz. gtx 770 4gb. 12 gig ram.

Ive been able to play most games out now with little issues by turning down graphics settings. (capped Rise of the tomb raider at 30 and cranked it) But i worry about doom.

And the alpha didnt tell me much cause you couldnt disable graphics options. Everything was pretty much maxed. I just hope there is a few things i can turn down to get 60fps.

I was listening for the wrong sound. I was expecting to be able to pick out the individual shots, but with the mobile turret mod they blend together for just a loud constant noise. the part of the clip I was paying close attention to was the early part, with the mobile turret mod.

I know the textures won't hold up pixel to pixel when compared to it running on a monster PC and it's far more contained that Rage but bloody hell, that's impressive. I really thought that I was watching the PC version. :)

Yep, looks great for the console release. Everyone will get a great version of the game, that's a good thing :)

Do we have system requirements for the PC version yet? I did a quick search online and couldn't find anything.

Granted, the beta ran and looked amazing on my computer, but I'm still curious all the same. Seems strange that the game is less than two weeks away and I can't easily find system requirements...

Am I the only one who prefered the more horror oriented Doom3 ? I still think this looks cool, and I enjoyed the beta, but it just looks so...cartoony ?!

I don't want the Doom 3 style for this per se but you're right in that this doesn't really look "scary" enough. I know some people will say "lolol someone was actually scared by DOOM?", but I always had a certain tension while playing DOOM and I'm not getting it from here. Doom 3 managed to do that to me somewhat. Everything is maybe just a bit too high tech looking.

Man, the single player looks so good! I can't wait to eventually play this, I really enjoyed the MP and the SP with Snapmap and everything sounds like it will be one hell of a package.

Can't wait.

Everything about this game is kind of a throwback to classic Doom 1 and 2, so that is why it looks that way since those games were pretty colorful.

i still feel traumatized by goldenboy being a terrible host. he seems like a really nice guy, but he doesn't contribute anything meaningful. He even said he wasn't very familiar with OG DooM.

really killed the stream for me.

Been watching a few of the single player videos and I'm really impressed on a technical level. Most of the videos show the game being played with a DualShock 4, does anybody know they're the PS4 version or if they're the DS4 on a PC?

It looks really impressive for a PS4 game.

First Doom Hard Difficulty Gameplay - In 1080p 60fps

Looks good, but action is still pretty tame in the opening levels of the game. I want to play those crazy action levels they shown from middle and end of [long] campaign. :)

It's literally in almost every combat scenario. Such a shame they are making Doom into this nonsense.

They're showcasing it because they like it. You can disable the glow and the button prompts separately as I understand it. I like the stun state overall, and it's something I've been wanting to see in more shooters.

While Doom 3 wasn't a great "doom" game, it definitely felt unique at the time and had it's own identity, while this new one looks generic and uninspired in every way. The monster designs to the weapon designs just feel down graded from doom 3, and a huge step from from the original doom games.

The monster designs in Doom 3 were an absolute joke. I mean don't get me wrong, not a HUGE fan of Darksiders Cyberdemon...

... but it is tone-perfect compared to the lumpy puppy that is the Doom 3 Cacodemon.

Do we know yet how the difficulty setting changes the game? In Doom 1 and 2, the higher difficulties had more enemies. I forced myself to get used to Ultra-Violence just because I liked having more enemies (and some would usually drop shotguns, so you could get it sooner).

Well for one thing Ultra-Nightmare is perma-death.

Stun state is OK I guess, as long as it has similar consuequences to the doom original pain state: aka less enemy potential damage to worry about.

It is annoying if it is a necessary state caused by guns that do not outright kill (ala being downed in gears of war).

I do agree with the person above. Doom 3's art direction sucked but it wasn't as bad as this one. That being said, I think they both look like shit, so it doesn't matter much to me which one I have to endure.

I've been wanting the same thing. I really liked how it was handled in Wolfenstein. Sometimes enemies would get knocked off balance, giving you just enough time for a melee kill.

I actually LOVE the visual design of this DOOM game! The retro dooms were sweet looking, and doom 3 was cool for what it was trying to be, but this game nails it for me.

The initial reveal had horrid brown textures and a piss filter over everything. The devs actually listened and tweaked it to look more retro. How fucking cool is that?!

Also Snapmap looks 11/10 and I'm excited to play HD doom 1 and 2 with online co-op. That Snapmap stream was tooooo much. Like littlebigplanet and halo's forge had a really cool baby. *and* it looks easier to use than both those tools.

And single player looks amazing too. While I personally would have liked to see a slightly more cinematic campaign, their reasoning for not doing it was super sound, and the story elements that they're using instead with little moments you can ignore and a goddamn INGAME ENEMY ENCYCLOPEDIA are unique, cool, an really fitting with the game. (Idk why but enemy encyclopedias always give me the biggest hype boner)

I'll be dooming day 1 for sure.

id said they're doing a PC tech feature soon, so they'll probably include the final requirements then.

This game looked less cartoony before, but a lot of people (including this forum) went apeshit over the lack of colors. So the game was changed to be more colorful. And the overall style was also changed to look a little more cartoony, which I'm guessing was necessary for the colors to make more sense.

The GameSpot host was much better. He seemed like a longtime id fan and he asked some interesting questions.

I wonder how that will affect the chainsaw kills though.

It won't. You'll use the shoot button when using the Chainsaw.

I'm excited to play HD doom 1 and 2 with online co-op

I don't think that will be possible, unless I missed something. Once you find a secret classic Doom level in the campaign, you'll be able to replay them from the main menu. But I don't remember hearing anything about co-op there. The only co-op will be in SnapMap.

I've been playing Doom 3 for the first time since 2k8 I think.

This game just gets worse and worse. No real pacing. Just endless monster closets and enemy spawning. Constant reloading. Gets really old. Stop, deal with encounter, move on. Get cheap shot, deal with encounter. Move on.

I've played some Painkiller H&D too. Giving me a lot of "Skate Park" Doom 4 vibes, so I'm starting to get a little more excited for 4.

Now that I've finally seen the stream and have been following the game religiously, I just feel the need to combat some complaints I've seen in video comments and even here and more or less just vent and defend the game.

Apparently some people are complaining about the weapons and sound design and comparing them to Doom 3. Considering the weapons in 3 lacked any kind of punch, people are insane. And D3 really fucked up the Cyber Demon fight. The Soul Cube was just stupid. I want to shoot it until it dies.

You can say all you want about the atmosphere of this game but saying it's a step down from D3 is ridiculous. I like Doom 3 but I never considered it a great Doom game. It's a decent horror game and a great FPS but Doom is about running and gunning and feeling like a badass, not waiting for monsters to jump from every corner, basically I never thought of it as a horror series.

A cinematic approach is not needed. Doom 3 added some story without actually rubbing your face in it which wasn't bad.

I think the gameplay looks awesome. Some say it looks boring or lame but I have yet to see it compared to something that they consider exciting minus the original games. I think the weapons look cool, the glory kills are a nice touch.

Basically I love what I see so far and think the developers are on the right track.

A combination of both is most optimal for me.

I loved the PlayStation port along with Doom 64 just because of the atmosphere. Just make a modern version of that and I would be set.

This time next week hopefully... Really looking forward to it. Might play Wolfenstein TNO in advance. Bought it on sale ages back and not touched it past the first level or so.

By the way, as well as the Doom PS1 port being creepy in atmosphere, anybody remember the super scary VO cutscenes? I had nightmares as a kid about the narrator sarcastically congratulating you on retiring to a "lifetime of frivolity".

And then compare that to a few years later squinting in the darkness to try and complete the original on GBA.

MAN I adore this IP. Special place in my heart. I don't know if this new one will recapture the spirit of the originals, but damn at least they're trying, which is more than anybody's done for 12 years... Wait, make that 22 years. Christ I'm old.

Genuinely confused by all these "generic" complaints. Generic compared to what? Call of Duty? Battlefield? Fuckin what major shooter release in the last 10 years looks and plays like this?

The Telegraph released a piece about the art of DOOM, where the artists comment on their thought process and inspiration behind 17 different pieces of concept art:

There is one piece of art they include that's kind of a spoiler, but I'll post some of the ones:

One of the main inspirations for Hell was Zdzisław Beksiński's art, who you may know for works such as these:

This month is just insane for me. Playing MGS5 and Dark Souls 3 right now. Next week my copies of Uncharted 4 and Doom will arrive. My PS4 HDD is a wonderland right now.

This game should have come out a month ago. It's going to be ignored by the masses because of UC4.

Hm maybe so but I'll personally be getting Doom at launch and

8 days to go! Feels like it's kind of snuck up on us. SnapMap looks amazing by the way, can't wait to try out all the different maps. I wonder if we'll be able to create a faithful rendition of E1M1 seeing as we cant do exteriors.

Actually you just know some lunatic is going to recreate the entirety of Dooms 1 through Final.
