Wha-' But they're rendered in real-time like the rest of the game.
I dunno. Either way, they probably have their reasons. Maybe they're working on performance for the hero picker, I dont know. It's pretty silly to think that because its going F2P which Valve has probably known from the start that they're going to start cutting back IQ on hero models.

Wha-' But I thought they're rendered in real-time like the rest of the game.
They're not, given that'd be a fabulous waste of resources (pick screen, learn tab, etc). Afaik, they're scaleform video, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. Bottom line is that whatever portraits you see anywhere, they're WIP and not necessarily locked with the hero model you see ingame.

Hmm, i thought the plan was to equip your cosmetic gear and see it in the card. Have no idea if you can do that in scaleform though. Having 108+ heroes on one screen running in real time doesn't sound very smart though. Any tech guys know what valves doing?

If it's anything like the TF2 implementation, you'll be able to swap out the loadouts and cosmetics on one hero at a time in some subsection of the backpack. The cards could still navigate you to that spot, but I wouldn't count on seeing 100+ active models just sitting on the page there and slowing things down.

Well I figured that was the reason they were going towards 3d model portraits instead of 2d. Either way, they'll all get updated for high quality assets sooner or later.

If the ingame portrait is swapped out for a model, at least there you have finer control over the performance, given you can only see one portrait model at any given time.

Scaleform is a form of Flash that you can embed in a game for things like UI elements or animated video portraits.
Thankya, sir!

How is this gonna work with cosmetics?

Shouldn't really be a problem. The Portraits on the selection screen don't need to show the cosmetics, and once you go into the inventory screen for each character, they can likely just load up their model there. In game, the portraits are rendered in real time.

Guys teach me how to get gosupro multicasts as Ogre.

Cyborgmatt posted a few changes you can make to the hero picker. The legacy mode looks pretty useful/familiar(even if it's stretching over chat).

I count 8 unreleased heroes in those Hero selection pictures.

Interesting sight to see. I really can't wait until this game has the entire Dota 1 roster.

A lot of the heroes look damn near finished (if portraits are a good way to measure progress). Meepo/Undying/Gyro/Phantom Assassin in particular. No Chaos Knight on there though.

Wonder if VO is what a lot of the heros are waiting on, like tree ent.

Report from low bracket:

So how about that Lycan eh?

I'm really surprised to see him disappear from my games after the deluge following his release. He definitely seems pretty straightforward in a pub stomping sense. Granted, I guess I'm at the point where people realize when a Lycan is on the board and getting out of control, ghostscepter and the like are great pick-ups to save your ass. But I don't need to kill heroes: just chase them off before rushing back to the towers and ripping them apart before they can regroup.

I've also learned that, if you want to win in the low bracket, you need to pick a carry. Relying on others never turns out well even if they lock in four carriers respectively. The chances of one of them actually able to farm well is still pretty slim.

Which makes Lycan all the better. No need to fight for farm in lane as you can just run around in your jungle as much as you want. And, so long as you keep a close eye on the mini-map, you can generally avoid ganks coming to ruin your day.

He does it all - carries, pushes, farms in the jungle and solos Roshan at a low level. He's up there with Venomancer and Night Stalker in my books as one of the top heroes that are fun and effective.

K so I got in but why do I have to download dota 2 and dota 2 test? whats what?

Dota 2 is the game. Dota 2 Test is the game updated on Wednesdays instead of Thursdays and with a lot less servers. Just install Dota 2 if you don't care about seeing the new hero a day early.

This reminds me. Can Lone Druid's bear place wards? I can see this being very useful...

I'm new to the game but when you're put with 2 guys who don't move in match making what are you supposed to do?

Try to play with the rest of the team and hope for the best, but you're probably not going to win.

Just tried out the new interface... I'm not a fan.

The cover flow is just a bad way of presenting all those heroes. It should probably start at some sort of grid and only go down to the cover flow once you've chosen a filter. Until you've chosen a role, you're just getting at a glance information for alphabetically nearby heroes, which doesn't really seem pertinent. Overlapping the cards in grid view is just useless skeuomorphism.

I feel like the information icons on the cards are a bigger barrier to figuring out what a hero does than just listing the text. Maybe because some of the icons aren't self-evident. For example, doubling up durable and escape with a shield icon is a weird choice, as one is a more passive trait while the other requires some player skill. I don't really see the benefit of the card designs at all when you have all that space to work with. It's fine for the death pop ups, and they should put the assisting heroes in there as well, but when you're at the pick screen I don't see the point. Putting the star rankings on the different roles is nice though. Leaving the stat numbers off is fine, because that doesn't seem all that important to choosing your dude (at least at a beginner to moderate level). Also, the recommended starting heroes button is a great idea, as well as being able to pop to a random hero in your filter.

Not being able to see hero picks in grid mode is dumb. Suggesting seems cool, but i'm not sure how much attention people will pay to it. It is a good way to get beyond any language barriers, though. I like being able to favourite heroes and text search, but those weren't really needed at all with the simple design of the previous interface. There also doesn't seem to be a way to look at people's profiles during picking now.

Not being able to read lore is a bummer too, but obviously that's not a high priority. :P

Just played with a drow who proceeded to go 5-20 and caused my team to lose. I was CM and I outcaried her. She even had more wins than me. How can someone who plays the game so much be so bad?

The Drow is no less blaming it on the carry CM.

Loving Viper. He's very new player friendly. As long as you get any sort of decent farm, you can basically just Q spam everyone to death.

Ugh, just want to let you all know, if your team already has a god damn Lone Druid and a Faceless Void, don't all pick carries too.

Seriously wish I could just perma ban all the idiots out there so neither I nor anyone else has to deal with them.

I play quite a bit of drow and once in a while have a really bad match. There are a few heroes in the game which can just absolutely destroy drow and she can't possibly stand a chance, if the enemy is persistent, she can't farm and ends up being a liability to the team.

I've learned which heroes those are though and I never pick her if I see them on the enemy team, so I haven't had a terrible drow match in a long time.

I don't think I've ever been anywhere near as bad as 1:4 though.

Yesterday for the first time ever i went "battle Tiny": even though i called mid some guy (who was also a terrible player) picked Pudge and said "Pudge always mid" so i had to go in a double melee with Treant against Veno and Void. Obviously by the time my combo was enough of an high level everyone was too tanky to blink and kill instantly, so i bought drums into Aghanim only i wasn't sure what to buy after AC so i just went Maelstrom.
My reasoning was that i was already around 3k health so it would've been better to dish more damage instead of tanking even more with Heart, plus i always needed to have buyback.
I easily outcarried the enemy Broodmother and Void (well, Void was just a terrible player) but we still lost because we had two dcs at 40 minutes. :(

It's been my experience that the worst player on the team is always the first one to start blaming everyone else for the loss.

My favourites are the people that will grey Lich or Zeus, wait until you and someone else have picked a carry then grab Sniper or Spectre because they hate winning and fun.

Well don't leave us hanging, who are these monsters?

Because I had a game where the Drow just fed on our Kunkka mid (I mean, seriously, who mids as Kunkka?) and proceeded to go 28-2 in the game. And of course the Kunkka was yelling at everyone else for the loss.

I had a match yesterday, where I was jungling as enigma, and everyone just started dying in lane.

I started roaming around at lvl 5, but even then some of their heroes were really fed. Their Sand King hit lvl 18 when our highest level was 12.

I'm just not sure what to do in those situations. If the solo bot struggles I can easily join him, but when every lane is failing simultaneously I don't know how to help.

If you're losing every lane, here's really nothing you can do. Likely, the entire team is outplaying yours.

Jungling is... interesting. It seems really good if you have someone that can play the solo lane, but it seems really rare for there to be people who know how to not die. It's a bit of a gamble, since if you start jungling and the solo lane begins to fail, you're just going to be behind than if you were in the lane from the start.

Though, with Enigma, you probably could have started ganking before level 5. When I was playing Lycan I came out onto the lanes to relieve some pressure when I was around level 3 even though it was slowing my jungling down.

Not much you can do before level 5 as a jungling Enigma. Your top priority is eidolons, and that spell is pretty mana intensive at early levels. You you also need mana to jungle, so you can't really afford to waste mana on your stun.

By the time you're level 5 you should already have soul ring, and with that your mana issues are gone. Mostly the problem is that at level 1 malefice is really crappy and at 2-3 is just decent, so if the lane doesn't already have a stun unless the enemies are way overextended there's really little you can do.

I go RoB though lol. So maybe that's my problem. Though soul ring seems better. Will try that next time I random Enigma.

Yeah, if there's no in-lane stun or slow a gank isn't really going to help.

The main problem was he was caught out of position all the damn time. He was TPing around the map with his boots like he was tinker. Of course he got slaughtered.

Just out of curiosity which heroes do you mean? I can't really think of anything besides just ganking nukers, which are a problem for any carry.

So i haven't played in few weeks (Diablo) and I come back to an abomination. Couldn't even figure out how to pick Viper. Tried typing Viper but to no avail.

Match ID: 1770451

I think I need a breather after that one. 66 minutes, they had our ancient towers down somewhere around 45 minutes. WE WON! Most of the game ended up being a race of the two carries (Me as Doom Bringer vs Death Prophet). Both of us were balling out of control the entire time. It was looking hopeless for us, but we just kept defending ourselves and eventually managed to win. I built a Divine Rapier. God. Damn.
