Double vision in one eye, or "Monocular Diplopia"

Old thread, but I wanted to chime in here and see if anyone had any advice. I have this issue most prominently in my left eye. I recently had my eyeglass prescription updated to its full strength, and now I have this ghosting pretty badly in my left eye. It's well controlled in my right, however. I went back to three separate optometrists over 6 visits trying to correct for the ghosting. All of their refractions and final prescriptions were within a couple of degrees of each other. I ended up spending $600 getting my lenses replaced 4 different times with no improvement. The more my astigmatism (cynlinder) was corrected, the worse the ghosting got in my left eye.

Now I'm stuck in a similar situation as some others in the thread. One of my eyes is very good and the other has this bad ghosting despite seeing clearly through the doc's pheropter. My brain suppresses the ghosting in the left eye, but not 100% well because text still has halos around it a bit and causes my eye strain throughout the day.

I'm going into a LASIK center this week to get a free evaluation with the waveform exam. That might let me know if it's a higher order aberration or something else, I imagine. Just wanted to ask if anyone has been able to make this condition improve with eyeglass prescriptions or other methods other than having LASIK done? I can't be blowing any more money on a problem that isn't possible to fix, but I just can't deal with all text from a distance being blurry like this!

I've been to multiple opthamologists, gotten countless tests, down to the shape of my eye, testing my muscles, retina, and even multiple brain scans and they've all basically said they have no idea how to fix it or what's causing it. From what I've learned "High Order Abberation" is basically a fancy term for 'something complicated we don't understand'. Honestly, if you truly have the same problem I do, I highly doubt lasik will do anything at all.

*since this thread being bumped got me all frazzled again, time to vent some more*

The worst part is I'm going to have to deal with the dread of this slowly getting worse with no way to fix it, ever. As you can imagine its kind of terrifying. I check to see if its gotten worse every night. Also I can't watch movies or TV shows or play video games with the lights off now, the lights have to be on or there's too much contrast and the double vision is much more noticeable.

I did notice that when I look down as far as I can, it gets 100X worse for some reason. Of course I rarely look that far down so its not an issue for now. Maybe it is a muscle problem *shrugs*

Same here. Except when I lower or turn my head to either side, whatever I am looking at tends to become blurry.

My mom wants me to go to some weird place called the 'Cypress Vision Learning Center'. Shes paying for it and Ive kind of ran out of options since at this point its kind of obvious we just dont have the technology to fix it yet so whatever, I went. They told me my Binocular System was 'Unstable' (whatever that means) and needs some retraining. I told them that doesn't make sense because it happens when only one eye is open but they said that can happen (I'm not buying it since that contradicts what the other doctors said).

Theyre making me do weird stuff like looking at a swinging ball with an eye patch and doing "eye stretches", the whole thing seriously reeks bullshit scam. I'm thinking about just not going because I don't want to waste my moms money since this probably wont work but Im kind of desperate...

I don't know what all this talk about your brain or your retinal blood vessels is about. It clearly sounds like higher-order aberrations.

I think you need to use a little more critical judgement of your ophthalmologist. They are not all created equal. If you have HOAs, the only answer is high-definition or waveform glasses, and the only way to get those is to go to a doctor that knows what they are. Google for one in your area.

Thing is isn't high order abberations just a category of vision problems? They were basically going through the list of what causes high order abberations and were trying to figure out a way to fix it since glasses don't help. That waveform glasses thing is pretty interesting. I'll try to research that.

I got something like this too. Though I also have other vision issues that affect me on a daily basis. Seeing light rays through every light source, eye pain every day, double/triple vision. Went through a good portion of college with this garbage (after having perfect vision for 22-23 years of my life). Now, I'll never be happy. I'm a broken piece of shit at this point, and I can barely go outside. The image you linked is pretty similar. White against black is brutal for me.

Same, but it's bright LED blues that are the worst for me.

Both eyes have it, though my right eye is way worse, with what seems like several ghosts around a bright object + nearsightedness. And it gets worse in both eyes as they get tired.

Thinks within a foot or two of my right eye are perfectly clear, however.

Yeah, bright blue blurs pretty badly for me. I wear glasses for nearsightedness too. I noticed it first when I was a little kid and the orange lamps on the side of the highways and roadways blurred. Also happens less when I get really close. I haven't been to an opthalmologist in a few years so I should get on it soon.

Another long bump here, but I have this pretty bad. This is mostly going to be a rant.

It seems to come and go and my expensive lenses that I've been pretty unsatisfied with for over a year now are supposed to fix it. I think I have focusing issues with them which is a whole separate thing. Money isn't exactly flowing so I've sort of just learned to live with it, but there isn't a day where it doesn't bother the fuck out of me.

I went to another eye doctor, one that actually took my insurance. They prescribed a fairly different prescription, but when I went to pick out a frame etc, they said my insurance would basically only cover 10% because I need such a special pair (thick lenses, etc). I walked out.

The ghosting/double vision is completely dependent on how "open" my eyes are, which is probably part of the problem. I find that I get the least ghosting when my eyes are almost closed (sort of in a "i'm about to fall asleep" droopy eyes level), which maintaining can be a strain on its own, and probably isn't very good for me.

I don't have a solution, but it seems to come and go in severity. I'm hoping what I'm going through these last few days will lessen, but I doubt it will. :(

I'm afraid to pull the trigger on new lenses just for them to not make a difference, basically pissing $300-500 down the drain. I really don't have any trust in eye doctors right now.

My only saving grace is that gaming, movies, the outside world, etc. aren't impacted heavily. It's just extremely noticeable on text, which sucks complete ass, but at least I can look away. Fuck reading, though.

I had this about 2-3 years ago but it was in both eyes. Basically whenever my view was angled (so any time I wasn't looking straight ahead) I had double vision. Was quite painful and nauseating at times but after a number of visits to the eye hospital it eventually seemed to just sort itself out as they couldn't find a direct cause of it.

I had lasik about two months ago and I have this (even moreso than the example image), but from what I understand it's fairly normal in my case.

Hi Guys,

I know this thread is a bit old but I have the same symptoms of Chezzymann. Did you find any reasons or explanation for that??

I've been to 4 ophthalmologists in Germany and Italy. 3 of them told me I have nothing wrong with my eyes. The last one told me I have a first stage of corneal edema. So I've been taking some medicines but they don't fix the problem.

It seems getting worse every week and it's very scaring!!!

I get this very often right after waking up or if my eyes are really tired and I've been up for a long time.

Doesn't really happen much otherwise.

[edit]

Always thought this was normal. So it's normal to never get this?

I am not a doctor, but at night our eyes get very dry. When we wake up in the morning, the eyes need a few minutes to 'restore' their lachrymation. This means that the first minutes after we wake up, is normal to have symptoms of dry eyes (blurred and/or double vision)
