DoubleFine's Amnesia Fortnight prototyping event for public viewing, voting & playing

Brandon's 100mph pitch for Hack 'n' Slash is definitely justifying its' winning result in the vote. Plenty of cool ideas. Funny how he's pitching over Skype from an airport waiting room!

Yeah, good pitch given the circumstances. One of my favourite ideas, can't wait to see it finalized.

So far, this is a very enjoyable watch! Hack N'Slash sounds very detailed and fleshed out already.

Love the story of Tim really trying to egg on Levi in getting his Black Lake idea developed to where it could be pitched. It's the kind of positive encouragement that you wouldn't get from many development houses. It seems Black Lake is the idea that has been gestating the longest out of the five.

You can definitely see how some leads have a much more concrete and developed vision of the final product than others who are still in an earlier more concept-y idea stage.

Absolutely. Speaking of developed, Black Lake also sounds like a fascinating and original concept. The preliminary artwork also looks cool.

It sounds like an original concept, but I'm still completely confused as to what you actually do other than walk about and appreciate stuff. I'm not seeing much "game".

Seems to me that you track the animal down through various signs etc. and find a way of soothing it so you can enter its dreams. You then solve whatever problem there is in its dreams - whether it be puzzle based or action based - and rinse, repeat etc.

Out of what we've seen, my personal thoughts are:

Hack 'n Slash - a neat idea, but it sounds like it's going to get pretty complex for those of us who aren't maths/compsci geniuses.

Spacebase DF-9 - Space SimCity, it seems, on a slightly more micro level? I'm not big on games without goals so I'm not sure whether this would be my kind of thing - he's clearly got loads of ideas but not many of them translate into anything beyond watching what's going on on screen.

The White Birch - it sounds wonderful, but is clearly artist led. I'm not sure how well much of this would come across in a prototype, to make it totally evocative it needs a real presentational polish, but I love evocative platformers so this sounds really interesting.

Autonomous - I think I lost the idea somewhere along the way, perhaps a bit complex to give in a pitch. Sounds like the UI requirements would be pretty tricky to tackle.

Black Lake - I loved this pitch, but again it feels very artist led. I definitely get the idea behind it, but I think if they can't get to handling a dream sequence in the prototype it might be difficult to convince others of how the whole thing would work on a game level.

Now the five pitchers are getting asked if their games will have hats.

Team Autonomous is the craziest. They will get no work done.

The day to day streaming is going to be filming meetings, work and streaming artists desktops as they draw which should be fascinating.

[EDIT - Brad Muir: "If you had to compare Steam to Games for Windows Live..."

Ouch.]

Brazen is just a Dark Souls boss fight. Down to the animation priorities even when healing.

Plays and looks amazing. I'm looking forward to it.

They should make Brazen free to play with micro-transactions. That way they'll have a strong player base to work from, and it won't die on the vine like Iron Brigade.

Daily live video edits

Kick back, watch the live stream, and catch the video digests presented by 2 Player Productions.

I know where the live stream is, but, what about the daily edited videos?

Hey guys I'm a little confused as to what's going on here.
I saw a bit of the stream, and people were showing presentations of the game they would like to make. The only presentation I saw was the the automaton one, which was confusing as heck.

This is what I got from the stream:
Right now 5 teams are showing off a game they want to make.
They have a couple of weeks to make a prototype to show off to the stream?

Then somehow/some way they are going to determine which prototypes are going to be made into full games?

Yeah, that's pretty much it, other than it's just one person pitching to try and put together a team, then those teams will make the prototypes over the next couple of weeks. Those prototypes might not be made into full games, but it's certainly possible they will. It's how a few of their previous games were developed.

Thanks!

Brazen needs to be made, it is by far the best prototype.

I'm 99% positive it IS being made. Brad was talking on GiantBomb about their plans for other monsters as teasers like the carcass in the prototype. I think the prototype was just included as a bonus since they had it sitting around. That's why he also had Kaiju Piledriver for the Fortnight.

These five are the ones that will potentially turn into a full game. I'd love Spacebase with DoubleFine's humor.

This. Just watching the GB footage and I would buy it in a heartbeat. Hoping the gameplay is not too mashy and still keeps some of the elements of the weighted combat from MonHun.

I freaking LOVE they way they make the monsters look stop motion style in Brazen. But for some reason I think that if that game does get made they'd cut that.

Part of me wants smooth animation to match the way the characters are fluid but it just looks so awesome to see that patchy animation.

The concept itself is disappointing...

Not really. It keeps what's good about monster hunter in the big co-op boss battles and combat with a focus on animation priority and it gets rid of everything else in monster hunter which puts a lot of players from it. I know it might not seem that great for monster hunter fans, but as someone who's never been able to get into the game because they find all the minor missions/harvesting/grinding tedious it sounds great.

Ease up the learning curve but keeping it just as deep will win over many gamers. SO far it sounds like they are taking MonHun, stripping out the ageing mechanics and trying to update it.

No, no, no. You can't be inspired Ray Harryhausen and not have the stilted animations. If they were to drop that, I would lose all interest. Brad specifically mentions about how he was inspired by Clash fo the Titans, Sinbad and the Eyes of the Tiger, etc. He said on GB also that it was actually harder to animate them like that, but yeah... It HAS to have that. It is the most striking thing about the game.
