Dragon Age 2 Combat Walkthrough [Difficulty Balance Detailed p.250]

Haha Hawke almost died when playing tactically.

Noticed that too. Play as an action rpg and win, or try to play this shit tactically and die trying. Great balanced play there. Bioware has really failed on this one.

Nevermind that he had less than 10% life left when playing "action RPG and win" mode too, though.

While I appreciate Bioware going for some damage control and trying to convince people that the combat isn't dumbed down from the already poorly-balanced DAO, I'm not convinced.

I wish Bioware would just focus solely on making tactical combat fun, fast, and responsive rather than trying to straddle the action/strategy line and not doing great at either. They should make a series with combat that relies on a completely turn-based We-Go system. It'll have tons of opportunity for cinematic scripting and pretty animations during the resolution phase without having to compromise on gameplay. If they design a good, simple interface it'll also be far more accessible and less of a hassle than the chaotic pausable real-time thing they have going on now.

Looks great, hopefully we can pause on the consoles as well or go more of the action way....If I had a choice I would go PC for this but my PC can`t run this so it`s 360 for me,had a blast in the first and looking forward to this one as well.

:lol

The animation here looks like a cartoon. DA:O looked like real people fighting.

yes, that's what I like about it.

and lol at "real people fighting".

Ok, finally finished watching the video. What the hell is with that animation? It like they took out some of the frames from it like some unfinished cartoon. They're pretty stiff as well. Anyone notice that while playing tactically, the "main" guy was close to death?

Looks like DA1 to me with faster combat and a nastier hud, so while i am disapoint with the hud (large and blocky, eww), still looks like DA to me, so im quietly a bit more confident :)

I also noticed that he was equally close to death while playing non-tactically.

a few, but fewer noticed that he was close to death when playing it the action way and needed to get healed at one point.

The main guy gets mauled in both scenarios. Whoever is playing just flat out sucks, honestly. The one that was supposed to be a tank never picked up any of the enemies, and in fact in the tactical version blows taunt with nothing in range, then proceeds to set his tank to attack paralyzed targets while the rogue proceeds to get attacked by everything that isn't controlled.

I honestly don't even see anything different about the combat except that apparently you have to hit more buttons in melee; maybe auto-attack is gone and tied to a button press now or something but it's entirely unclear from the video to me.

The graphics look pretty bad in the clip and make me think the detail is turned down (similar to the kind of reduced effects you'd get in like an MMO at medium or lower settings) and I really hope the game doesn't look like that at max settings.

Yeah I had to rewatch that. The janky animation was what's grabbing my attention during the "action" part of the game.

Please tell me that isn't the final PC HUD. Oh God.

First sentence wins.

Looks like the fucking Windows 7 taskbar. Please tell me the level they're fighting in is pre pre pre alpha.

Looks so bad. :( Dragon Age was the shit too. My first GAF avatar was the awesome bloody dragon from the case. Sure it wasn't perfect, but who else will make me polished PC RPGs? Who?

Apparently not Bioware.

HUD looks like ass, graphics look very similar to DA1. HUD was really the only thing that offended me. The colors are too bright

I don't know how can somebody decide that showing a gameplay video with a placeholder HUD is a good marketing move.

Looks good to me. The only real doubt I have left is whether the combat is balanced with pausing in mind. I worry that even the hardest difficulty will be balanced to be played real time. Only a decent amount of time with the game will tell us that.

Looks better than I expected, except for the bizarre "cool factor". I think the attempt at being really "badass" is going to hurt the tone of the game, and I can't say I'm interested in the direction of the story if everyone fights like that.

That being said, I think if we all set the difficulty to hard the combat will still have the same tactical value of Origins.

HUD looks miles better than DA:O.

I kind of like the bottom bar, I think that's fine. But the character portraits and vitals just look ugly. Maybe it's the color scheme for those but they stick out in an unpleasant way.

I've capped all the ability descriptions that showed up in the video, for anyone who's curious.

A whole lot of AoE damage/CC.

To be honest, I don't really care that they changed it into more of an action rpg. I'm not huge into that old school rpg. That being said, I don't think it looks like a particularly good action rpg either :/ I'm excited to gamefly it though!

You're trolling me now right? DAO was perfect.
Perfect? HUD aside, the general UI was pretty bad. The HUD was serviceable I guess. This new one makes it easier to see party health, and makes playing with a mouse easier if that's what you want to do since they're near the main toolbar, and the transparent map looks pretty nice.

Yeah menus weren't very good. I did like the clean HUD though. It had a classy look to it. This just looks cheap. I can only assume it's a place holder. It has that whole Dragon Effect vibe about it.

Looks like Dragon Age except:

Ass-y HUD
Uglier Everything
Worse Animations
Lack of Full Tactical View
More Action Heavy [Not necessarily a bad thing]

I personally thought DA to be a mostly mediocre experience so I do not care what they do with this game. I will most likely buy it day one, play it for 80-90 hours along with rest of gaf and probably never touch it again.

Gosh, that's not super realistic medieval combat sim.
Notsureifserious.

I can't say I quite remember if DA:O was better or worse in that respect. But when you start lauding the animation, it is worth pointing out this really bad thing in the animation column.

CD fucking Projekt dude, have you heard of it?

that being said, this looked sort of enticing to me, but then again I am a scrub when it comes to RPGs.

He said polished, not Polish. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I don't know what's so bad about this. Looked cartoonish, stylish, fun.

I would have been happy with a DA2 that kept the gameplay from the first game and just upgraded the graphics.

Instead I get this.

Wow, I really hate that character design. A serious case of Bad Art. Tries hard and falls on it's face in an attempt to look badass and cool with all the spikes and the stupid hair cut. I mean, it's not like Dragon Age had stunning character design or art style, but that OP pic is just downright yucky.

Oh it's the style change you don't like? Fair enough, I get that. I don't mind it.
