Dragon Age: Inquisition | E3 2014 Coverage

Isn't the game made on the same engine as Battlefield? Wouldn't hold my breath for a smooth experience at launch if that is the case.

Aside from some crash issues with a certain skyscraper being knocked down in Battlefield 4 that got fixed the Frostbite engine is pretty amazing. This isn't a 64 player first person shooter juggling netcode issues, it is a singleplayer RPG so I don't expect nearly as many problems.

Yeah I'm not worried about the game performance at all, at least on PC. Last gen will likely suffer a good deal visually but should be stable otherwise. I wonder if all console versions will be at 60fps or if only last gen versions.

Well the other muti storied building still drops the games framerate into the single digits when it collapses.

The game is supposedly content complete and this 3 months left are exclusively for polish, menus, UI, codex, that kind of things.

I still like Frostbite 3, even though I suffered the first 2 months of BF4. That engine scales really well from outdated gaming laptops all the way to Titan Black rigs. It's the risk of using a new engine for a big AAA across 5 platforms cross-gen (see Watchdogs), not really the underlying tech itself is bad. People just conflate them together and say "Frostbite sucks".

Also anything is better than that Bioware inhouse engine that gives people hair carved from wood.

Is it just me or is this game not getting a lot of attention. It feels like there isn't much hype for it. I am not much into Bio ware games, but I want this to win me over. It looks great Snr previews look fun. Media seems to ignore it though.

It has certainly gotten more attention than others such as Lords of the Fallen which looks spectacular in its own right.

Did not expect this new character reveal: Cole

cole-profile-260x260.jpg

He is a ghost in the shadows, walking unnoticed through crowds. He can slit an enemy's throat before they even realize he's there, and slip away, never to be seen again. Those few who do notice him soon forget he ever existed… and Cole isn't certain that he does exist. He is a spirit, impossibly caught between the immaterial realm of the Fade and the confusing realities of our physical world, but does that make him real? Does it make him human or a demonic pretender, as some believe?

All Cole knows for certain is that the world is full of pain and he must find his place within it. Those who wish to restore order and help the helpless will find him a strange but unwavering ally. Those who use their power for selfish reasons may never see Cole again—if they remember that he was there to begin with.

Pretty creepy looking. Kind of reminds me of Mackenzie Crook from Pirate of the Caribbean.

First character since Vivienne that has piqued my interest. He looks like a Phantom Dust character. Might be the first time I keep a rogue in my party.

Interesting, is he just an NPC or a full party member?

Character design-wise, veering close to the Final Fantasy "How many buckles do you need?" look.

He was introduced in the Dragon Age: Asunder novel. He had a "talent" to be forgettable (and instantaneously forgettable is kinda like being invisible.)

He is very similar in concept to "Justice" (In dragon age awakenings)

Full companion.

I know who he is, just didn't expect them to reveal him before others like Dorian or Scribe Girl.

So, wait, there are more than nine companions after all? Or Cole is part of the original count?

Part of the original count. 9 companions and 3 advisers.

Other people wouldn't know that, so you don't have to have your knickers in a knot.

Just clarifying my statement so people don't think this is some previously unknown person since my original statement could be interpreted that way.

Cole's part of the original 9: Cole, Sera, Varric, Cassandra, Iron Bull, Blackwall, Vivienne, Dorian and Solas. With Cullen, Leliana and another woman whose name we don't know yet as non-companion advisors.

I wonder who she will be. Cullen = Military Leliana = Intelligence/Espionage . ???? = Economic

and a character that must of been introduced in another game. So a female Merchant?????

From the picture of them all around the table, she's a dark-skinned, nicely dressed human (I think) lady with a topknot hairdo - doesn't look at all familiar from previous titles, could be someone entirely new. Merchant is a good call I think.

You can make her queen, have her marry Alistair, marry her yourself, or depose her. The first one is kind of boring, but maybe it'll turn out interesting. The last 3 though provide far more intriguing possibilities. Though we might not see her at all if you depose her since Alistair, at least initially, imprisons her, though most people were calling for her execution to eliminate her as a threat to the throne.
Ah yes. I think I convinced her to marry Alistair. Truly a horrible fate.

Yeah, he looks pretty weird. The kind of emo backstory made me think there might be a bit of pandering going on but I'm not sure how many will find that face attractive.

Only watched the dragon fight. There was some really bad stuttering on the female archer. Why do devs design dragon fights where the dragon fights you on the ground? It's just so lame. Maybe it forgot that it has wings...

Also not seeing any viable romance options.

Not digging this new character Cole, seems to be kind-of a shoe in just for the sake of doing so. Not digging the whole emo vibe either, hoping he has a bit more depth at least.

Just give me Alister.... :(

He has the mind of a child, so he won't be involved in any kind of romance.

But that could open up some interesting/funny in party dialog. If Cassandra was your love interest and Cole asked some childlike embarrassing questions about relationships. The kind of thing Bioware does.

Alistair would be more shoe-horned in I think, since he's either king, dead or drunk somewhere. Plus getting on a bit by this point. We've had a spirit-type companion in all the other games (Wynne in Origins, Justice in Awakening, Anders in DA2) so Cole continues that tradition at least. It also makes a certain kind of sense that he'd be drawn to the Inquisitor since the PC can actually see Cole (presumably because of the green fade thing in their hand), unlike most people.

That could be somewhat amusing, having a party of four, but only the player realises that Cole is with them, so the other two think she or he is going a bit doolally.

Seriously, who the hell wrote that character description for Cole? It seems like someone straight out of high school writing a fan fiction did. Actually I felt this way about some of the other writing I have seen so far. I'm really looking forward to this game but some of the writing has been cringe worthy.

I don't think there's been a pre-release character description from Bioware that hasn't sounded like that. Nowadays I ignore what's written and focus on the key points amongst the paragraph of marketing spiel.

It's from the same marketing guys that release pictures with bugs and all.

At least they're better than David Silverman!

Maybe Isabella retired from being a pirate and became a merchant.

Long gone are the days of Viconia, Edwin and Minsc..
He kinda looks like Aerie though!

He was one of the best parts of Asunder, which was one of the best supplemental books I've read for a game series. So hopefully he'll translate well into the actual game. The character marketing has been pretty groan worthy, but I'm not taking it too seriously.

Pandering is to be expected.

This is the developer that brings back entire characters whose arcs were finished just for fan service after all.

Not really thrilled about Cole though. Not the most interesting character in Asunder by a long shot.

I will be enormously bummed if we don't see Alistair again in DAI. I mean he's the king of Ferelden and one would assume the Chantry-mage conflict and
whatever is happening with the Fade
is also occurring in Ferelden. I can't imagine the Inquisitor is just going to run through Ferelden without at least paying his or her respects. Also, he was one of the best characters in DAO and it was such a treat to see him again in DA2. Really hope he shows up in DAI.

This is the developer that brings back entire characters whose arcs were finished just for fan service after all.

While they've done some questionable things in the past the writers have specifically stated a number of times that characters won't return unless there is good reason to do so within the story and not simply to pander to fans. Gaider especially spoke against this, noting Oghren in Awakening as the last time he gave into fans request for a returning character.

It's for similar reasons Cole isn't a romance option and why the other companions have set sexual orientations this time around.
