Dragon Age: Inquisition | E3 2014 Coverage

If people want a good breakdown of confirmed or highly suggest features and info, check out Maclimes "What We Know" topic on the BioWare forums. Lots of useful info.

As well it appears one of the female VOs is Alix Wilton Regan, AKA Samantha Traynor from ME3, as well as Ser Cauthrien from DAO.

kinda bummed to hear they are bringing the dialogue wheel back once again. that shit is played out and somehow way less interesting than just choosing what you think would be the appropriate response from a list, with npc's reacting accordingly. i don't really need to be told if i'm saying good guy or bad guy things...i'm not 6.

whatever though, its not the worst and it sounds more subtle this time.

*puts on nit-picking hat*

All this graphical and processing power and we're still getting games where swords don't have scabards and characters are pulling arrows out of thin air instead of wearing quivers.

*takes off nit-picking hat*

The game looks fantastic. I'm still surprised we didn't get an extended demo of it during any of the conferences - especially EA's.

I have to admit I was feeling a bit optimistic about this game... but seeing actual gameplay was hype deflating. Off the radar now.

Well they still got that 256MB RAM to worry about.

Can't wait for end of cross-gen era.

That's a bit premature, we have yet to see a proper gameplay demo. A spliced together barely minute long dragon fight during a conference isn't really the best example.

fuuuuuck that stream is selling me on the game and I've never played a DA game before. Should I before playing this game?

Just started watching the stream but dammit the camera seems way too close to the back of the character. Even beyond the "tactical" camera I just hope they have some flexibility in terms of zooming back.

Ugh, the facial animations ugh...

Baby steps, at least the bows got strings now.

The combat looks better than DA2 but worse than DA:O. Agree with you Jibbajabbawockky about the the camera being way too zoomed in. But overall the clips shown is better/more interesting than anything shown prior. But man that conversation system is so immersion breaking...

Female Qunari Player Character

Some other tidbits from the stream were:

  • No Autobalancing enemies, they is what they is no matter what
  • Weapon customization, change hilt, guard, blade, pommel
  • Level up the Inquisition through research, which can open new dialog
  • Hinterlands is a small/mediumish area in the game, yet larger than all of DAO combined
  • Most romances ever(yay?)
  • You can miss potantial companions, and finish the game with one single companion. (it's you and me, buddy!)
Leliana is confirmed as the spymaster of the inquisition.
  • The scar on your hand will be one of the major mysteries in the game, that you'll want to find an answer to.
  • You collect mounts throughout the game, mostly to travel areas you've already visited. One of them is a giant Lizard

I liked almost everything that was on the stream but I'm still not feeling the battle system. It seems like a bad compromise between DAO and DA2.

Is there a video presentation available coming from those screenshots?

Hopefully a bunch of BioWare peeps have tweeted that the Twitch demo was a shortened version of the whole thing and they hope they can put it up soon, but it might not be until after tomorrow. I'm willing to bet they'll use some of it at IGN later tonight or tomorrow on Gamespot.

I don't know I think she looks pretty great. Kind of wish she still had the mullet from the artwork. I think the Yolandi from Die Antwoord look suits her. She's not ugly, but she's also not super attractive either.

Also Lukas Kristjanson wrote Aveline, aka one of the best characters in DA series, so I expect good things from Sera.

Agreed, its boring when every female character looks like they came off some super model assembly line. When they look, average and normal maybe people can actually look past that and see them as a character. Its how i took a liking to Aveline

The more I see from this game the more I get an MMO kind of vibe (mounts, flashy effects, whole party standing in the middle of fire without getting burned etc). Hm, I am in the wait and see corner now.

Also while the IGN event isn't for another 3 hours and 45 minutes, the E3 floor will be opening up in 45 minutes so hopefully we'll get some vids or more likely impression/info from attendees.

Edit: For those that missed the Twitch demo you can watch it hear, skip to around 1:44. http://www.twitch.tv/twitch/b/537207659

Was there any talk about specializations for your companions? Are they preset like DA2 or like DAO where you can choose based on their base class?

Looking at the game play and the whole package, for me the dream is pretty much dead. Origins was the only game worth playing and at this point Bioware should stick to action shooters with conversation choice elements.

Man yall are so overdramatic. No wonder no one wants to make games for you.
Luckily there are far more companies making games for us now than there were 5 years ago.

I remember when I desperately tried to like DA2 because it was the only party-based RPG out there. Bad times, those.

Yeah, on the western side it was getting pretty bad and that's probably a big reason why some of us were more frustrated over gameplay design changes than possibly if the same happened in a JRPG (although FF CAN be a trend setter so XV going all KH-style is troubling.)

Good thing Obsidian, inXile, and Lirian are filling up more traditional WRPG holes with others like M&MX going even more traditional though, or else Bioware's course would be even more frustrating than it already was.

lol

Hyperbole much?

I can't wait for this game.

I still think it looks great, the graphic quality, open world and combat are all pretty much what I wanted from a DA: O sequel and the fact that we can choose our race is the icing of the cake.

Sure, combat it's more flashy and all but I kind of like it, it's not like DA:O's was perfect, and we don't know yet to what point strategy will matter, there might be some great scenarios for it to shine.

I'm surely looking forward to this as much as ever.

Character Profile: The Iron Bull

[DRAGON AGE]: What was The Iron Bull’s life like before the Inquisition?

[PATRICK WEEKES]: The Iron Bull was a Ben-Hassrath internal agent on an island controlled by his people, the Qunari, but threatened by rebels and agitators. Imagine the Dragon Age equivalent of a federal anti-terrorism unit, and you’ve got the basic idea. When things got hot, he was the one the Qunari sent to handle the situation.

[DA]: Sounds like demanding work. Although, judging by his character design, he seems up for the task.

[PW]: True, but nobody can handle a job like that forever. When The Iron Bull burned out, his superiors moved him to what most people outside the Qunari think of when they imagine the Ben-Hassrath: spy work in other countries. He was told to set up a mercenary company, take jobs from nobles, and pass information back to the Qunari.

[DA]: How does he end up with the Inquisition?

[PW]: The official reason The Iron Bull joins the Inquisition is that his Qunari superiors want to know what the Inquisition is doing. Qunari have a pretty dim view of uncontrolled magic, and a giant hole in the sky is about as uncontrolled as you can get.

[DA]: And unofficially?

[PW]: Unofficially, The Iron Bull sees demons attacking innocent people, and he wants to help. He knows the Inquisition’s agents would uncover his ties to the Ben-Hassrath, so he’s opted to save time and be completely up-front about his work. If the player can handle The Iron Bull sending reports, the Qunari agent can get the Inquisition valuable information in return from his spy network.

[DA]: How would you describe The Iron Bull’s character?

[PW]: The Iron Bull is casual, friendly, and confident. There are very few things in the world that he can’t kill if he needs to, which puts him at ease most of the time. He’s got no need to compete with anyone or prove himself, and he doesn’t need his ego stroked. What he does need are people he can trust to watch his back and friends he can laugh with. After surviving years of ugly, nasty fighting, The Iron Bull has learned not to take anything too seriously. Unless it involves demons.

[DA]: Why demons?

[PW]: The Iron Bull has a thing about demons.

[DA]: What sets The Iron Bull apart from the other followers in Inquisition?

[PW]: The Iron Bull really loves life outside the demands of the Qun, now that he’s gotten used to it, and he does everything big. He overeats, drinks himself sick, and will hop into bed with anyone he’s reasonably sure he won’t break. He’s been close to death enough times to appreciate life whenever he has the chance.

[DA]: How does he get along with his fellow companions?

[PW]: The Iron Bull is a relaxed, friendly guy who gets along with just about everyone. He loves talking shop with Cassandra after battles, for example, although he’s a lot more enthusiastic about chopping people in half than Cassandra is. He also gets along surprisingly well with Vivienne, who keeps him in line when he gets too boisterous.

[DA]: You said “just about everyone.” Are there people that he doesn’t get along with?

[PW]: The only folks The Iron Bull has trouble with are those who go looking for fights about the Qunari. He isn’t trying to convert anybody, but he’s not going to apologize for his way of life, and people like Varric, who saw the Qunari at their worst in Kirkwall, might take that the wrong way.

Really love the sound of full weapon building and customization. The armor combinations make me giddy too. The magic and other effects make combat look amazing, so I can't wait for that (magic needs dem particle effects)

Mark Darrah also responded to me on twitter and said a completionist playthrough would probably take longer than Origins. Origins was almost 60 hours for me with no DLC so buckle the fuck in.

No question I'm running the Iron Bull as my tank and Sera as ranged support. I need to know more about the other mage before I know if Vivienne will be my mage choice.
