Dragon Age: Inquisition | E3 2014 Coverage

Funny you should mention that. Mike Laidlaw loves DD.

I would love to see some incredibly challenging post-game dungeon/ruin type areas. I know they've said that the dragon fights are intended more as post-game content, but I hope there's other stuff as well. Really, DD is the only game I can think of that's really delivered on that stuff so far (for me). Let's hope Mike Laidlaw being a fan is a good sign.

That didn't stop Mass Effect 2.

Awww, ME2 had some great characters though - Mordin, Samara, Legion, that Asari bartender who turned out to be Liara's dad (loved her voice). Sure, there was a little cheese going on there too, but it was, er, nicely flavoured, moreish cheese!

this makes me sad... I really want loghain and Alistair in my game but I don't want my warden to be dead either :(

in DAO loghain killed the demon but I want to see his cameo. I loved the first two books

You know they can both be alive, right?
In Origins you have to, um, 'harden' (unfortunate word) Alistair after he visits his sister in Denerim (say 'you have to look after yourself' or something), then make him king with Anora and spare Loghain. Al will leave the party and won't be happy. Then have Loghain (or your male warden) do the ritual with Morrigan.

Not that you actually have to play through Origins again, I'm sure the Keep will let you pick that combo :)

Do you feel like sword and board do viable DPS this time around? Considering that for my main this time around.

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw
We are certainly -trying- to make DPS shield builds more viable, yep! #BALANCEINTENSIFIES

Well that is promising. I'm going Fem Qunari mage my first run but I've always loved the Sword and Board characters damage machine characters, so I might have to do that for my second run.

Wait so Morrigan is a follower for DA3!?

No, possibly a temp companion though given the fact that when we first saw her she was in a ballgown type outfit but here she is back in her DAO combat outfit. There are only 9 companions, of which we've know all of them for a while now. There are also 3 advisers, which we know two of them, the third has been shown but not named. All we know of Morrigan is that she will play a major role and acts as an adviser to Empress Celene of Orlais..

Hopefully I did this right. But this is the post here on neogaf that talks about day/night cycle. Somebody did a write up from a panel.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=108148533&postcount=600

Hmm, how long ago was the actual interview? Cause several sites have reported its in, and it has been discussed on the bioware forums, though as I looked back into it I couldn't find any official confirmation so idk?

edit: found a partial scan from a magazine (looks like GI) that says there will be a DA2 style day/night option. So technically no cycle, but still sorta totally yes. Dunno if I can safely post the image so I wont.

Ah that explains the friction between her and Vivi

The game seems good but one my the most important parts for me seems quite disappointing: The companions, none of them looks that appealing, I loved DA Origins because of Leliana (loved her) and Alistair (funny and likeable), Morrigan (interesting and fights with Alistair) and Wynne (quite clever) Shale (I laught a lot with her)

Finding out that Leliana is not a companion dropped my hopes for the game.

Anyone else is disappointed at the party characters?

I'm beginning to agree with you. I think DA3 is going to take GAF's Game of the year over destiny, personally.

Eh, if Pillars of Eternity makes it out this year, Inquisition might not even be the best RPG of the year.

My impression was that maps would not have an actual real time day/night cycle but instead it would basically be like DA2. But I think they have said there would be dynamic weather, which should be interesting.

Sort of, but its hard to judge them too much without getting into the game. On one hand I thought many of Origins' companions seemed mediocre in the lead up to that game's release and I ended up really enjoying most of those companions and their interplay with each other. Yet I really didn't care for any of the DA2 companions, as they mostly all felt really boring, heavy handed and poorly thought out, maybe with the exception of Varric.

But if we're playing as a new player character anyway, I'm happy they're not bringing back many old companions in the same role. Just bringing back Leliana or Morrigan or Alistair wouldn't mean much since we're playing as the Inquisitor who has zero relationship with any of those old characters anyway. They're just strangers to the Inquisitor. It might be different if you were playing as your Warden again, where you had that relationship.

Eh the reoccurring theme of daddy issues wore thin with me.

I haven't even gotten to know most of them so I don't feel like its fair to judge personality yet. Some look promising, some don't, thats usual, and Varric is a darling. So no not really in that regard. I am somewhat disappointed by the race/gender balance though. Too many humans and males. Out of 4 races, 5/9 comps are human, 8/12 (66%) if counting the advisers. And 6/9 party comps are male. Them some lame statistics I think.

So you think Mutiplayer got cut or are they gonna last minute announce it or not announce it at all?
How long did it take for ME3's MP to get announced?

ME multiplayer was announced almost half a year ahead of time, but that was possibly due to a leak a few days prior. At this point I'm not so sure DAI will have multiplayer. They may be holding back the announcement for closer to release to really get some major hype going for the game, but for such a major addition to the franchise it's a bit surprising they didn't showcase it at E3 to get maximum coverage. News like that would have been one of the bigger stories of E3 and gotten some serious coverage.

They didn't showcase it for ME3 until the leak you mentioned and it led to all sorts of people bitching about the quality of the game suffering because of tacked on MP. Little did they know that the MP would be one of the best things about ME3 and their fears were aimed in the wrong direction. I imagine they don't want to reveal it just yet for Dragon Age in case there is a similar reaction. The vocal minority react poorly to multiplayer being added to their beloved singleplayer.

Can someone explain to me why people are still taking this game seriously after reading this?

Because a few lame 130 word marketing blurbs do not make an entire game? Because there is a ton of good stuff coming out about the game like reintroduced tactical camera, plenty of character customisation, massive areas to explore, decent looking fights and pretty visuals? Because Bioware are actually pretty good at writing likeable characters even when they get other things wrong, so in all likelihood this is a marketing mis-step and nothing more? Because Patrick Weekes wrote Cole, and Weekes wrote a lot of the best stuff in ME (like Kasumi, Mordin, Samantha Traynor, and Rannoch and parts of the Tuchanka storyline in ME3)? Because yelling 'Abandon Ship! Abandon Ship!' for this seems a bit overblown and hyperbolic?

I think the character blurbs have generally been rubbish as well (though the writer interviews have been very good), but if this is all it takes to get you to no longer take a game seriously then I don't know what to tell you. I understand that in a post DA2/ME3-ending world, BioWare have opened themselves to all sorts of criticism/concern for things that they would have been given a pass for a few years ago, but given the positive stuff that's coming out about this game, dismissing it entirely because of this seems to be taking it a little too far imo ...

I've never played a Dragon Age game before, but am incredibly excited for Inquisition. Looks outstanding, and is one of my most anticipated titles of 2014. I don't know if I'll get around to playing past titles before this game is released, but assuming my experience with Inquisition is a good one, I will have to go back and check those out! Just wanted to drop by with those thoughts and to comment on how awesome the OP is - very informative, thanks. Subscribed. :-)

The ultimate edition for Origins has been on sale a lot recently and I highly recommend and I only completed it recently. Very good game with a heck of a lot of content. I'd personally it's worth a crack just for the general back story. If you play on PC I recommend mods there's lots of good ones that really improve the experience.

These characters blurbs are pretty awful, but the writers interview show that these characters are being handled with attention. And even in M3 and D2 the writing for the characters was mostly good so I don't think that is a problem.

What is a problem though is the fact that this blurbs are being used to market the game, because if I hadn't known better I would get a very negative impression from them. After DA2 ,I think that Bioware would be more careful marketing this game. These characters blurbs and quotes sound amateurish. Let's not forget that the companions were spoiled almost two years ago in a leaky marketing survey.

Huh I thought it read like something from the back of old Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance novels.

That doesn't make it any less bad. It reads more like Sonic OC than anything else to me. You'd be better off comparing it to previous Bioware games if you really want to excuse it.

Well, it's a character in a fantasy role playing game. Seems pretty par for the course. Not to mention that the game on the whole looks fantastic for people who are into this sort of thing.

These marketing blurbs are awful, we all can agree with that, but Cole is being written by Patrick Weekes, who created the best character of the Mass Effect series, Mordin, and also Legion.

I'm confident that Cole will be a good character.

Cole's characterization in asunder was good too.

This. If you read Dragon Age: Asunder then you would know who Cole is. He is a well written and interesting character, I'm actually surprised that he's in the game as I thought after Asunder he wouldn't be appearing at least not as "Cole."

Asunder Spoilers:
Long story short "Cole" is some sort of spirit of the Fade except all throughout Asunder he believes he is a human mage named "Cole". Problem is nobody can see him and the people that do soon eventually forget that he exists. The main character of the book a mage named Rhys, investigating mysterious murders at the Circle in Orlais finds "Cole" and can see him. Anywho, everyone Rhys talks to about Cole says he's clearly a demon/spirit of the Fade but Rhys doesn't think so, he just thinks he's a good boy that some weird magic shit happened to. At the end of the book we find out that Cole really is a Fade spirit/demon and was responsible for the murders, although he didn't know it, he's basically a spirit that forgot he was a spirit. He mentions that there was a "Cole" who the Templars mistreated, and he held his hand until his end. Thus, it seems in the end he finally accepted and understood what "he" really was.

I mean seriously, why are people bashing a character they know nothing about in a game they have yet to play?

Because it's BioWare, this is NeoGAF, and DAI isn't the Witcher 3 which is very much flavour of the month! :p

Realistically, it's also because the blurbs have not done a great job of making the characters seem interesting, even though I'm pretty sure most of them will be. And since BioWare's last couple of releases have been plagued with either controversy or bad feeling, there is still some negative bias around which will take a while to counteract.

I do wish it would calm down a bit though. There is plenty of room for optimism here - DAI is looking great overall, I think :)

Not sure anyone was ever expecting any other game to be TW3 aside from TW3, so why would this matter? There's room enough for more than a single game. Even if people have issues with specific missteps, Bioware still has a lot of clout left, or at least they should from all but those with the shortest of memories. It's not like they are the WoW team (aka all of Blizzard) trying to replicate a Blizzard North game. They still have an idea of what they are doing.

CDPR has gone out of their way to juxtapose Witcher with DA before. GAF ate it up like candy and the comparison stuck.

That's definitely good to know. I love BioWare for better or for worse but so far the characters I've seen for DA:I look a little, generic and embarrassing. However I typically have stayed away from character bios so its not the best view point I will say. What I mean is from a very small view I don't think they are selling the characters as deep and interesting more cliched and dumb.

Weekes only wrote Legion in ME3, Chris L'Etoile was his writer in ME2.

Weekes is also responsible for Tali in ME2 and ME3.

Take a look at the writer interviews about the characters on Bioware's website. They do a much better job of selling the characters than the dumb little blurbs, and actually make them sound interesting (in my view, anyway).
