Dragon Ball Super |OT2| June 12: Judgment Day

The guy who did all the Cell/Buu promo posters in the 90s was great, although I don't think the anime ever really captured his style:

Yep that poster was on my wall for a good few years. Super has its problems but it's still fun to be reliving this stuff as an adult.

Nah man I'm with you. It's an awful layout, really awkward overlapping of the characters, and everybody just looks angry, which is so unlike Dragon Ball as a whole (besides Vegeta (before Super)).

I'd probably have dug it when I was a wee lad though.

nah man trunks' face is longer than the rest and vegeta's eyebrows are slighlty more curved and goku's got the smallest head relative to body and piccolo's green

See, I think for me that poster represented everything I wanted DBZ to be. I got it after the original Ocean dub came out but before Toonami, before anyone went Super Saiyan, so I had no idea what was happening except that they looked like a bunch of badasses. Not exactly how the series turned out post-Cell... But that's another issue.

I still like it now though... nostalgia is a harsh mistress.

I loved that episode where Trunks wrecks freeza, and Freezas flashbacks with gokus voice scaring him.

Also, dang that new Toriyama art style is cool, they should have gone with the that.

The best look the anime ever had was episode 120, thanks to based Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru.

When I was a kid, my dad let me pick out a movie randomly and I went with a 3 episode VHS titled "Mysterious Youth" with this character I hadn't seen before. This was the summer before that season aired. Boy was that a lucky pick.

I think I still have the VHS cover laying around somewhere.

Swag team.

amazing that the best looking episode of dbz is followed by literally the WORST looking episode of dbz

jarring as fuck

I don't get the extreme reaction over this particular scene. At least in comparison to some of the crap in super.

The change is apparent, but it's still a "valid", non f'd up style to draw the characters in. I mean, it's not like this. That just reminds me of the art style from earlier DBZ.

Are you considering that "literally the worst" looking episode of DBZ just because of that scene or were other parts bad looking as well?

Yajirobe should totally train Trunks and Goten in swordsmanship.

I think the non-usage/not taking advantage of a focal point when animating is one of the problems in Super. If they're going to draw things, that are not in the center of focus, that poorly then they need to make sure that whatever the viewer's attention is being focused to is better drawn instead of the same poor quality. The Beerus vs Goku episode could have been better in that aspect, since the only thing somewhat well drawn were the backgrounds.

Notice in this gif above how, once the character loses focus, he may appear to be drawn slightly worse. However, by the time that moment happens your eyes should already be drawn to the power/animation of his arm and then the creature, which is the focal point.

EDIT:

Look at how the first artist focuses on the characters, specifically the center of the frame, then look at his backgrounds. Notice how the second artist puts more of a focus on the overall scene, thus the characters suffer but the background improves a bit(He also tries to fit a bit more of Frieza's body within the frame in Frieza's shot). However, no one is paying attention nor cares about the ground behind Frieza nor the sky behind Trunks.

I love the hollow pupil effect Freeza has in the first shot; it really adds to the fact that he's feeling an immense sense of fear at that moment.

So a question since I just recently watched both Battle of Gods and Ressurection F.

Is Dragon Ball Super going to retcon the ending of Dragon Ball Z or merely take place in the time between the Buu Saga and the final span of episodes in DBZ.

Wouldn't that be a bit... limiting? (Mainly that they can't do anything far out with the characters since they need to end in the same place as the ending of DBZ) Or Is Super not meant to be another long running series?

Sorry for asking so many questions but between watching more TFS stuff and playing Xenoverse, been riding a sort of Dragon Ball high recently.

The movies were described as taking place before the End of Z, but they've said nothing regarding the End of Z for Super itself.

This is my favorite old school DBZ poster. I never had it, but I always wanted it.

Well not sure if it's completely retconned, but some parts have been. For example, Bulma says she hasn't seen Goku for 5 years. Pan is 4 years old at the time. In Super, Pan is already born and Goku has been in constant contact with Bulma.

Just read the OP and Gohan in Super is now confirmed not to be shit-tier for no reason.

Can't wait til English Dub 89 years from now.

Raditz's attack names are the best.

Saturday Crush.

Your picture is not part of Super.
That was an unfinished episode before corrections that they had to air. That literally doesn't count.

Speaking of Trunks, his Finishing Buster is a vg exclusive move, or did it appeared in the anime?

He uses it against Frieza in that episode people mention a few posts above. He doesn't say the name though, he just screams "FRIEZA!" Don't know if he uses it in the manga though.
One of the coolest moves in the entire series if you ask me.

[EDIT] Wait, am I confusing it with the Burning Attack? Man, for all his coolness, he sure has generic attack names from an English perspective.

That one is Burning Attack. Finishing Buster is a energy ball that he throws forward as if he is performing a throw-in.

The attack he used against Cell in the future doesn't have a name, and AFAIK, outside the anime it only appeared in the PSOne game DBZ Legends.

From an english-speaking POV those names aren't that cool. As portuguese is my primary language, then it sounds really cool, LOL

It's because Vegeta isn't the arrogant jerk he was in his youth anymore. His pride was always holding him back.
