Dragon Quest 10 direct feed screen shots

I can't wait for this. As a life long fan of JPRGs DQ has always struck me as super generic and the genre's most vanilla entry (like the Friends of JRPGs or something, accessibility=popularity). Going MMO is just what it needed to grab my attention.

Looks terrible why?

Because it looks ugly and bland?

This is an older (and free) MMO:

World looks dead, impersonal, and soulless, like most MMOs. DQ VIII's world was lush and rich as hell (I'm playing through it again right now). Not excited :(

It really does look graphically similar to FFXI... *sigh*

What do ya know, still the most popular MMORPG, and a PC exclusive. Plenty others target this kind of system. It's not exactly uncommon for MMORPGs to look low end, sir.

So what? One is beautiful, the other not.
It's unrealistic to expect the game to look like the other RPG's that you prefer. It's made to look cartoonish with Toriyama's style because that's just a staple of the series. It's just annoying to see people complain about the art in every single Dragon Quest thread despite the series having existed for 25 years.

The party character designs still look dull to me, but the monsters look really good (unsurprisingly). Some of those environments are intriguing, too. I'm looking forward to it. :)

Nobody's complaining about the art, we are talking about the technical execution, which does look bad. It actually reminds me of those free browser MMOs that pop up these days.

I agree with this; except the 'looking forward to' part. If I can't play it offline then...

Wasn't it not long expected that being on the Wii, it would look similar on a technical level with DQ8? Even the on-rails Swords looked about on par. In any case, people need to remember there will be the Wii U version coming if they want to play the game on an HD console.

The overworld was, but the moment you step into a dungeon, it's almost nothing but wide empty boring spaces and tight corridors.

Also, it needs to be hammered in that these are still early shots. The world will probably look more detailed when the game drops.

No Level 5. No buy.
Because Level 5 had such a large impact on how good the last two games were.

I'll complain about the art. It looks fucking awful and completely incongruous with the environments.

How people are comparing this favorably to DQ VIII is completely beyond me.

I disagree, style doesn't cover blandness, it´s a technical problem. This looks worse than DQ7. This looks even worse than some of the 2D DQ, because they were made at the peak of the technical capabilities, while this is a compromise fest, trying to do something that is unfitting for the hardware they are using.

They could have make something beautiful with the Wii hardware, but making it a MMO limits it a lot in terms of memory and visual fidelity:

So let's get this straight:

And as extra, an older and more cartoonized MMO (this time a PC exclusive, eh alex?):

Lol? Are you for real? Dragon Quest has no brand power outside Japan. Do you really believe it has a chance competing in the MMO space, with no PC version and against Guild Wars 2, WoW and the army of F2P MMO available?

I'll answer that for you: hahaha. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't localize it.

WoW that I posted is not PC exclusive? News to me.

Lol @ the shot comparison. Best DQVII screen you could find vs the most plain DQX pic available? How objective of you.
dragon-warrior-viii-20041129091627693.jpg

I mean I could understand if there weren't any DQX shots with more trees, but comparing a shot from a hill or whatever looking down at a somewhat of a forest and city versus a shot from ground level that just looks at a handful of trees and hills, when there are plenty more similar shots that also have cities or more numerous trees in view? Come on, lol.

These screens look like crap compared to the HQ trailer that was uploaded. Like WTF.

Nintendo and SE have a Western agreement with DQ games...it'll be localized for sure.

Not feeling this game at all. I so wished it would be like DQVIII, but the environments look lifeless, dull and empty. It being an mmo pretty much kills it for me. Why didn't they just call it DQ Online and made a different DQX?

That screen also looks better than any of the DQX shots.

WoW has exceptional art style. This DQ online game does not. And its obviously not a technical feat.

That being said...the first few screenshots gave off that f2p Korean MMO vibe that I hate. The kind of game where you use the same 2 abilities for grinding mobs and doing terrible fetch quests all the while getting maybe one or two full suits of armor. I hope this game doesn't have any kind of structure like that.

That screen looks quite good, it even has a proper shadow.

If you're going to make incongruous comparisons of screenschots like that, I have nothing else to say.

The overworld screenshots here though don't show the monsters on the field yet, but were shown in the trailers.

Well, that's like, your opinion. There's nothing to argue about that.

Well, that's like your opinion too. I like the art styles of both, and it's more or less the same art used in every DQ anyway, with minor differences like having or not having ink outlines. If you don't, too bad, but I'd guess you can't expect to like any DQ ever.

I never said it doesn't, it's a great looking game, why does one have to be ugly for the other to look good too? I was just showing that having one screenshot with plenty trees vs one with barely any, and with such different composition, from atop a hill to a great view, vs one at ground level looking at nothing much, doesn't mean anything whatsoever as both games have been shown to have very varied locations. Also, this is an MMORPG, and there are no random battles, that holds back how far they can push any specific element too, since you can potentially have many players and many enemies on screen, it has to be able to handle that whether it happens or not.

So wait are the wii and wiiU versions going to be the same game and have cross platform play? That would suck if so.

Incongruous?, three forest pics of DQ games and the DQ X one is the blandest one, how's that incongruous?

I made my point, it looks fugly, and many people here basically say the same. Don't want to see it? suit yourself.

I must be seeing different screens from some you. I think the art and the environments look nice.

It could be because you lived under a rock the past 6 years. :P

But it seems that I just have too high expectations when it comes to such a meaningful franchise, the Wii's capabilities concerning this art style and SquareEnix' abilities to do good graphics on Wii (FF Crystal Bearers was already looking cheap).

BTW alex, I have no time for your craziness, but I just picked the first screenshoot I saw. And really, your "bad" screen is not only very poorly captured, it looks better than what we have seen of DQ X sooo, way to go?
