Some photos from someone at GameFAQs. It's pretty interesting to see it in-game.
awesome, I guess it'll be a february-march release.

Just finished chapter 2 at level 13. I had a much easier time with
Simon and the tongue monster
than I usually do (made some really good guesses on the latter). The idle animations for the
colosseum enemies
were especially nice, too.

I still haven't run into any problems, and I think the
colosseum
music sounds great in this version.

Magicpaint said:
How good does the music sound hearing it directly from the DS speakers? I might be playing the game that way, so just wondering ~

It sounds decent, but you can't really hear any of the bassy sounds, which stinks. The punchiness of a lot of the music suffers a bit.

Aw, darn.

I might have to start searching for a headphone then. Awesome DQ music ftw.
who plays DS games without headphones anyway? the DSlite speakers are terrible.

After 2 5-day stretches of not having anybody sell a sword of malice to me in chapter 3, I'm starting to wonder if they took it out... but I'm probably just having extremely bad luck. It's never taken this long, before, though!

gonna piss off scarlet if they took that out. I didnt bother with that when I played it on NES.

It seemed like it took me a while last time I played the NES version.

Those screens have me so excited for the NA version. Do you like the way they've done battles with the two screens?

I finally got it, after another 30 minutes. I guess I just happened to get really unlucky, I think... although I suppose it's possible that they reduced the chances.

As for the two-screen battles, yeah it's nice. There's more space available for the battlefield and the little portraits on the top screen are neat. It's also nice to be able to see the action's target above the portraits.

If Squenix doesn't announce a North American release date for this soon I'll likely just import a Japanese copy and use a FAQ/walkthrough for Dragon Warrior IV to play through it. Or I might just keep on playing through Joker depending on how much money I have to play around with. I'll get Japanese versions of the DS remakes eventually, if only for collection's sake, I just don't know when I'll be able to do so.

I asked this question in previous pages but didn't think I got a reply. Are there many Kanjis in the game, or they are mainly hiragana?

I believe Aeana said the Japanese in this game isn't that bad. To answer your question there is Kanji but from what screens I've seen the Kanji seems to be pretty simple. If you're worried about running into some obscure ones I don't think you have to worry.

it was a long wait.

But oh so worth it. I'm debating on whether or not to get the Japanese version (I understand it.) Think I may just wait it out, since I've been waiting all this time anyway! (not to mention I have a crapload of games to play still..)

I just finished chapter 3. One major change to this from the PSX remake that I neglected to mention is that you get access to the bag in chapters 1-4, whereas in the PSX version, you didn't get it until chapter 5. Because of that, I
not only filled up Torneko's inventory with swords of malice, but also the bag!
. I'm not sure if the contents of the bag will carry over to chapter 5, but it didn't require much effort, and it'll pay off if it does! :)

I just finished chapter 4 and got some characters in chapter 5... and it turns out, the items from the other characters' bags DO carry over.
You could absolutely destroy this game using items from chapter 3... But we'll see if Torneko's items carry over, or if it was just the sisters!

As a side note, I noticed a little slowdown in Komiz that occurs in a specific spot every single time. A small issue, but it was there. Of course, it's not like the NES version didn't have slowdown problems!

Well, I got Torneko to join my party... and sure enough, everything from his bag was added to mine. I'm going to be rich, but I could have been richer. :\ Oh well!

Something else I've noticed is that small medals are no longer added to your inventory or bag at all. They must go straight to the medal king like in DQ5 (there's a count on the status screen for them).

This game sounds legendary. Even if I have the NES cart sitting 2 feet from me right now.

I wish it were in NA already. :(

I too would be disappointed if it used that same DQVII engine. It should look fresh like all the first remakes have looked. :/
Were I+II and III SFC all that fresh?

Didn't you also state some other DQ-related megaton would come true, and it did?
I think that was... this game.

yes, each reprise or remake used a different engine. I'll be disappointed if DQ6r ends up looking like DQ4r.

Finished chapter 1, very nice.

I prefer the visual look of the PS1 version (mainly the ground/water art), the portability and speed that's modernized makes it much easier to play and enjoy the DS version.

Scarlet, I always thought your DQIV avatars were sped up animations. Was suprised when the enemies attacked at super fast speed like your avatars.

How long is DQIV in general? DQVr was like 30 hours, VIII was about 75 hours and I hear VII was over 100, so there doesn't seem to be a general average for DQ games...

The oddest thing about the DS version is really just that they didn't account for the gap. Throws you off when looking at a town or especially a dungeon and you're expecting there to be a gap.

It's almost like they chose to ignore the gap just so they could put out those pretty screenshots of the two screens joined and everything looks great and connected.

I'm really digging the idle animations for the monsters.

After looking around for immigrants for a while, and finding the only one I've found so far in Monbarbara's church (which was not one of the places in the PSX version, I believe)... I'm starting to think they changed the immigrant locations. :\ What a pain.

Strangely, my town has begun populating itself. 3 people came to the town, one from Mintos and two from Konanberry. I also got access to the new aspect of the town, which is creating guys to send to other people via local wireless. It's too bad that it's not wi-fi. :\

Well, I found some information regarding the immigrant town. It seems that there are specific people you have to recruit in order to break the cap on the town, after certain story events. The first one was that nun I got in the Monbarbara church after you get the magic key. The second is apparently a rowdy and a poet in the Bautland inn after you get the final key. Now... I've gone to the Bautland inn, and there are no such NPCs there (I've just beaten
Esturk
). I've walked in and out of the place many times to no avail.

There's a third NPC that shows up in the waterfall cave after you beat
Esturk
, supposedly, but he doesn't show up either. I wonder if I've permanently missed my chance or something. If anyone is still playing this, or is going to eventually, it'd be helpful if you could check the Bautland inn a few times after you get the final key when you get there and see if these NPCs do exist.

I might just start a new file to see.

I shall speak to you men plainly: you will see DQIV on this english plane.
Megaton and all that, can't wait for this. :D And the other two remakes if they're coming--those even somewhat more, actually, since I haven't played them.

If, by some miracle, the US sees a newly remade 3D FF, an entirely new DQ, and 3 new DQ remakes on the DS in 2008, the world as we know it will cease.

S-E's gonna have an amazing 2008 on DS.

Not surprising, given some of the titles I expect we'll be seeing next year. Their 2007 was pretty good, too!

That's not happening.

Isn't DQV announced for early 2008?

That probably means that the three remakes are being developed at the same time, and probably with the same engine.

I really doubt we will see DQVI with anything other than the same DQIV engine.
